  • With all the deals that fall apart, and with all the customers who blow their top at seemingly the least provocation, it's deeply refreshing to see something go right, as in the case of the lady who brought in a bag of colored stones that she had inherited from her grandmother. She wanted to find out if they were worth anything so that she could get some money to help pay for her grandmother's funeral, and Les promised to have them appraised by a gem expert who was coming into the store later that day. Ashley told Les that he was wasting both his time and the customer's, as she was sure, having looked at them, that they were just colored glass. The expert duly came in and appraised the stones, and confirmed Ashley's pessimistic evaluation...except for one bright red stone that turned out to be a Burmese ruby, worth $10,000. The customer's reaction when she was given the good news was priceless.
