Go To

  • Sonya was a school teacher and openly supported Malcom as transgender. Considering this was likely in the 90s or 2000s, it was highly unlikely for a transgender person to be accepted in any social scenario and Sonya was pretty barrier-breaking for this time.
  • Otto lets Malcolm stay with him and hates the fact that his father discriminated against him. Even Otto, a grumpy old man hates transphobia.
  • Every time Otto sleeps with the cat that visits him. The kitty cares about him.
  • Even though Reuben has had a stroke and is in a wheelchair barely able to move or speak, he still gives Otto a thumbs up for defending him and exposing the real estate agents against their illegal tactics to remove him.
  • When Otto wakes up, Marisol says “You’re really bad at dying” in a joking way but it’s so reliving since you can see he obviously will live. At least for a several more scenes.
  • The look of joy on Malcom’s face when Otto fixes his bike.
  • Otto gives Marisol the crib planned for his kid to her son, Marco. He even refurbished it so it has a better design with a fresh coat of paint.
  • Jimmy vows that he will take care of Reuben and Anita after the developers suggest that no one is available for the job.
  • The social media journalist, Shari Kenzie, may initially annoy Otto, but he tolerates her more later in the film and, during his funeral, she is there to memorialize him as a local hero, making it clear that he has touched a lot of people directly and a lot more who will know about his good deeds.
  • You can see pictures of Otto and his life with Marisol and her family with their kids. Otto has finally had his chance to have a family at last.
  • Marisol is shown to have kept her word about not letting her husband drive the truck in respect for Otto after his funeral at the end.
