Headscratchers / We Need to Talk About Kevin

As a Headscratchers subpage, all spoilers are unmarked as per policy. You Have Been Warned.

  • Has anyone ever felt confused about Eva's description of the gymnasium, and more accurately, how Kevin locked all the doors without being seen? If he locked all the doors from the outside, then locked the last door after the students came in, how did they not notice kryptonite locks on all the other doors? How did he lock the doors to the change rooms without getting stuck in the change rooms himself?
    • The book mentions that the gymnasium is in a separate building and, as it was the end of the day, nobody was around. They were apparently all distracted by talking about themselves. Plus, changing rooms tend to have two exits - one to enter from inside the gym, and one to exit from elsewhere in the building. It's still a stretch, though.
      • It is incredibly confusing, particularly if you've not attended a school with separate buildings for different facilities, but this proper has given it a few tries over the years, so here it goes: the gym is in a separate building from the high school, but still has hallways and corridors surrounding it – there are no doors directly from the gym to outside. Therefore, the change rooms have two doors each – one into the hallway, and one into the gym. Kevin locked the doors between the change room and the gym, but exited through the door to the hallway. He also locked all of the doors from the gym into the hallway save for the front door. With the front/main door, he waited until everyone had arrived and then locked it from inside the hallway. The alcove in which he was standing was on the second story, and accessible through a staircase, presumably not one that could be accessed directly from the gym (or that he'd locked already). Far-fetches, yes, but we'll have to just assume Kevin got his location scouting skills from his father.
