What's with Mina's shoes before the wedding? And them being connected to her being "a Darkie", as she herself says?

Just before the wedding at the beginning of the movie, Mina comes into her parents' house all dressed up, and her mother immediately demands Mina puts on other shoes (they're actually referred to as "slippers" in the discussion, but aren't what usually are called "slippers" in the U.S. or Europe — they're just female flat summer shoes, Indian styled). Both Mina and her mother make a big deal out of the shoes, and Mina also remarks that she's "too dark", hinting her mother probably is ashamed because of that.
Why would these shoes be inappropriate? Why does Mina hint that changing them is such a big deal ("The things I do for you, Ma...")? How come these shoes are somehow connected to Mina's skin being "too dark"?
