• What's the deal with Bellamy and Kneedling? Kneedling knows that Bellamy is on the verge of bankruptcy, so he can't have been paid up front, so why is he working for him? He doesn't seem like the kind of guy to accept a promise of future payment, no matter how confident he is in his ability to stop Fogg.
  • Not having £500 and not having £20,000 are different. It could be he had enough to scrape together payment for Kneedling, but not to handle his debts as a whole.
  • Blackmail. Kneedling can get his £500 and keep getting money from Bellamy for years by threatening to reveal what he knows, using his position as a policeman to explain how he "found out." Proving it wouldn't be an issue as the rumour itself would likely ruin him, at least socially. Of course, that only works if Bellamy gets to collect his £20,000. Kneedling's obsession with stopping Fogg makes total sense if you assume Fogg is standing between him and years of easy money.
