- When Eleanor arrives, Mrs. Dudley delivers an ominous speech about how isolated the house is, warning her that if anything goes wrong, no one will find out until morning. Eleanor's seriously considering turning around and leaving when Theo arrives. Turns out that Mrs. Dudley delivers an identical speech to everyone and Eleanor's able to throw off her groove a few times by saying the next sentence before she can.
- Theo's first reaction to seeing the inside of Hill House: "It's the home I've always dreamed of. A little hideaway where I can be alone with my thoughts. Particularly if my thoughts are about murder or suicide or—"
- A lot of the humor in general comes from the cast being Genre Savvy enough to make fun of the house's horror-movie trappings.
- The cast comes upon a huge, horrific marble statue grouping in the conservatory and blows off their unease by coming up with funny symbolic interpretations of the figures, finally concluding that the ugliest of the figures "is Mrs. Dudley, done from life."
- The arrival of Dr. Montague's wife. She's wrong about everything, but she's a hoot.
- From the series: Nell and Steven dancing together at Nell's wedding, watching their sister Shirley realize that their other sister, Theo, is a lesbian. Shirley's facial expressions cause Nell and Steven to clutch each other to keep from falling over laughing.Steven: Ten minutes. It took her almost ten minutes.
Nell: Ten minutes and thirty years! - This ties to a scene in an earlier episode of Shirley thinking she's seeing a guy hooking up with a bridesmaid only for Theo to come out of the room.Shirley: I didn't know you were into...bridesmaids.
