The Duke's Children

  • Trollope gets snarky when describing Sir Timothy's style of oratory: "...he invented a pseudo-patriotic conjuring phraseology which no one understood but which many admired". Later he adds, "Sir Timothy was a fluent speaker, and when there was nothing to be said was possessed of great plenty of words."
  • Dolly proposes to Isabel. She tries to refuse him. Since this is Dolly Longstaff we're talking about, "tries" is the operative word. It takes more than a full page of very silly arguing before she finally convinces him she means no!
Isabel: Mr. Longstaff, you must forgive me if I say that of all the gentlemen I have ever met in this country or in any other you are the most obtuse.
