Fridge / Voltes V: Legacy

Fridge Brilliance:

  • The reign of Zambojil was ended by twin birds: most directly Zardoz's dagger with the sigil of two doves...but also by the Solar Falcon, the fused form of the Solar Bird and Camp Big Falcon, which brought the rebel force over to his empire. Also, doves are said to be symbols of peace. Therefore, Zambojil's regime ends with two birds taken out with one stone, the other being at the expense of Zardoz' life after protecting his half-brother, Steve.
  • The Boazanians have varying numbers of horns, which may imply social status, yet it seems odd that Draco, a general, has more horns than a prince. But if you view horns as a symbol of prowess in war, it could also explain why the scientists are one-horned (less-physical fighters who operate on the technical side), nobles are two-horned (fighting in duels for honor but rarely on the front lines), warriors are three-horned (generals who actively command in battle), and their representation of a god of war, Godor, being depicted with four horns despite no actual Boazanian being seen that way—likely a symbolic exaggeration in their cultural art.
  • The reduction of Beast Fighters from 42 to just 16 might seem like a disappointment to some, but it makes sense in context: Zardoz losing that many times would have discredited him as a villain and made it way unlikelier that Zambojil would have tolerated him that long.
    • Though to be fair, losing 16 times is already rather discrediting itself.
    • Some omitted Beast Fighters actually make the story more impactful:
      • Zardoz pilots the tiger Beast Fighter Gargo in the anime, but with this Beast Fighter omitted in Legacy, it adds more weight to Godor being piloted by Zardoz himself.
      • The omission of Gonguru and Kuragenyara to instead change Dr. Smith's death to a murder by Fake Ned makes his death by plane crash less redundant (as Mary Anne Armstrong had died that exact same way already).
      • Tobiurago's arc is replaced by Zorugeru/Zoldier, condensing the arcs of Big Bert splitting off from the team without permission, and merging it with the arc of the search for Zuhl's hidden base.
      • Saimon and Daimon are replaced by Desler's shield form: highlighting Oslak's improvements on a previous design and how his strategy differs from Zuhl.
      • Giron is replaced by Takeo and Arisa, which both makes the arc of "Boazanian warrior defects and is killed for their rebellion" more personal as they fight the Voltes Team instead of the Voltes V robot itself, and of course the Doylist reason that a human-like Beast Fighter would have been harder to render in CGI.
      • Dorion is replaced by a fleet of plague-germ spreading spacecraft, which is a more efficient way to spread a pathogen as a weapon.
      • Daiand is reduced to a ring form, both making hypnotized Jamie a bigger threat, highlighting Oslak's cruelty, and making General Robinson's death more personal than another Heroic Sacrifice.

Fridge Logic:

  • If Hrothgar's parents are both horned, why is he hornless?
    • Simple genetics. If we're studying the amount of horned vs. hornless Boazanians, there are more of the latter, and being one of the former is thus a privilege. Therefore, being a horned Boazanian can be considered a recessive genetic trait, while being hornless is a dominant one. In this case, Hrothgar's parents may both have dominant genes that they passed down onto him, and thus he was born hornless.
  • Speaking of parents, what happened to Oral, the father of Hrothgar? He was absent aside from Fadsa and their family's doctor Obgen when Hrothgar express his frustration of hiding his hornless nature by wearing fake horns to them.
    • Zambojil cracked down on everyone associated with Hrothgar, so he was probably Killed Offscreen. Or maybe like Zaki, he went to Campbell or Brahmin.

Fridge Horror:

  • Little Jon may be a genius, but he is still a child. And through the course of the series he has repeatedly suffered numerous near-death experiences, witnessed his mother die saving them, trusted a fake father that then murdered his mentor figure, made a friend in Manuel only to have him be Prince Zardoz all along, and then find out Zardoz is actually his half-brother. What kind of mental effects would that have on him?
  • Considering the sheer power of Shugoshin Godor that almost destroyed Voltes V despite recently being awakened from a centuries-long stasis underneath the stone idol façade, what kind of enemy Boazan had faced to create Godor in the past?
    • This piece of background lore can be Fanfic Fuel. Most likely, Boazan was under another oppressive intergalactic empire centuries ago, and its scientists created Godor to be the ultimate fighting machine similar in manner to Voltes V. It also makes for some delicious irony, considering that the oppressed of yesterday can be the oppressors of today.
    • In the original anime, Heinel's wording implied Godol was not a robot, but a Boazanian just like him. It was cut out in the live action, but the anime Godol had somewhat a resemblance to Jesus with his beard, and we know Heinel is obsessively religious. Make of that what you will.
