Neither Father Burke nor Sister Irene wear their religious habits while on their way to St. Cârța Abbey or while leaving it at the end of the film. They only put them on while inside the actual abbey, which seems weird considering that in that time period, priests and nuns wore them all the time. But this makes a lot of sense when one takes into account that in 1952 Romania was a country from the Soviet block and hostile to religion. Father Burke and Sister Irene probably had to sneak in and out of the country and avoid the habits so as to not draw attention.
