Fridge Brilliance

  • Superman giving up might be seen as only a reflection of the intensity of the nightmare, but there's another explanation. When Superman is fighting and needs to call up more determination under normal circumstances, what is he probably thinking about? The people who need him. His nightmare shifts the scenario in two important ways — one, most of the people (if not all) he would normally be fighting to save are dead, and two, he's not fighting an outside threat. The biggest threat to any survivors at the moment is himself.
  • Why does Batman use "Frère Jacques" as his song of choice? The diner jingle that was playing when he first turned on the radio was set to the same tune, so it was probably still stuck in his head.
  • Compared to the psychologically targeted dreams of the other Leaguers, Hawkgirl's claustrophobia nightmare is almost tame. However, it's revealed in the season finale Starcrossed that J'onn has never been able to read her mind, so it may be true that Dr. Destiny only had access to her general phobias.

Fridge Horror

  • Superman's nightmare is horrifying enough as it is...and then you realize that Superman isn't just super-powerful; he has Super-Senses. Destiny forced him into experiencing the deaths of at least three people and the destruction of his city in all the intensity that his senses would allow. However nightmarish his time with Destiny was for the viewers, it had to be far more nightmarish for someone who could see and hear everything.
