Fridge / Fuzzy Nation

  • The book's intro shows Jack letting Carl set off his explosives. For the rest of the book he is constantly accused of doing exactly that sort of thing, to his insistent denial. He is also accused of punching his previous boss during a trial to get him off the hook for a major lawsuit by causing a mistrial, which he also denies. As more of the story is revealed, more and more evidence piles up to suggest Jack is also lying about that. To say nothing of the fact that he did convince several other people to perjure themselves in court to help the Fuzzies.
    • When Jack wants to represent himself in court, he jokingly promises not to punch his client in court this time. He keeps that promise, technically: he goads Joe into punching him instead.
  • Throughout the book, Jack, while working quite diligently to net himself the biggest payoff possible on the sunstone seam, also doesn't seem to have any trouble scraping together the cash for several unexpected expenses like repairing his skimmer or restocking fire suppression foam for his cabin after it's set on fire. It is eventually revealed that he was given a bonus of five million credits, possibly as a payoff for getting his previous boss off the hook in a trial. He's probably still a millionaire, but isn't inclined to spend any more money than he needs to to make his stay on Zara XXIII comfortable until he's able to move on elsewhere.
  • One scene has Jack finding Aubrey messing around on the controls of a piece of heavy construction equivalent, comparing him to a child playing with a toy. By the end of the book, it's revealed that the company sees him as a Manchild who must be supervised by his supposed assistant Landon.
