How It Ends is a 2021 comedy drama written and directed by Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones who also stars. The film also stars Cailee Spaeny, Whitney Cummings, Lamorne Morris, and Logan Marshall-Green.

It's Earth's last day as a meteor threatens to destroy all life. L.A. has been mostly abandoned except for the people who have accepted their fate. Liza (Jones) wanders the streets with a metaphysical manifestation of her younger self (Spaeny) trying to get closure with loved ones and enjoy her last day.

Tropes

  • Ambiguously Bi: Larry mentions to Liza that he cheated on her seven times, only for her to point out that he had previously told her he had cheated on her two times. He responds "with women, yeah."
  • Bittersweet Ending: The world does indeed end, but Liza makes peace with her friends and is able to be alone and love herself at the end.
  • The End of the World as We Know It: With a giant meteor coming towards it within less than a day. Everyone who stayed in LA has accepted it and is trying to enjoy their last day in Earth.
  • Mundane Fantastic: Liza having a metaphysical manifestation of her younger self apparently has been going on for a while (and apparently other people have also been seeing and interacting with their own younger selves), but due to the end of the world now everyone can see and interact with them. Alay apparently can also see the future, another thing that predated the end of the world (her ability to see that Liza's relationship with Larry wasn't going to work out led to them fighting and breaking up their friendship), although due to the end of the world Liza now believes her.
  • My Future Self and Me: Played with. A manifestation of Liza’s younger self is just there with no explanation. The same has happened to an elderly man, and Nick Kroll's character, who is implied to have killed his younger self.
