Fanfic Recs / Shelter (2016)

Proof that the remaining 10% is worth getting put into a spaceship for here.

These are recommendations made by Tropers for fanfics based on the animated short film Shelter.

Shelter: The Farewell, by Theroonco.
  • Recommended by: Junkwarrior20999
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A prequel story to Shelter, telling the story of Rin ending up in the virtual world of the film through the eyes of her father. Watching the short beforehand is advised as the story assumes this of its readers.

Sheltered, by LordsFire.

  • Crossover with RWBY
  • Recommended by: Battleship_Fusou
  • Status: Complete (see below)
  • Synopsis: Some time after the events of the film, Rin’s ship arrives over Remnant. After landing and subsequently being recovered by Atlas, Rin is gradually introduced to the new world she’s on.
  • Comments: It’s a bit of an emotional roller coaster but overall a fairly hopeful story in this troper’s opinion.
    • Additional comments by Cronosonic: The fic is now finished (albeit earlier than intended, due to the writer performing a creative Rage Quit over what he considers to be exceptionally poor worldbuilding and writing in more recent seasons of RWBY, though he still committed to providing a reasonably conclusive ending both structurally and emotionally, complete with additional notes elaborating on how the story would've gone if he had decided to continue), and it's a wonderfully emotional story that arguably utilizes the material of RWBY better than the actual series and integrates Rin and what little of her world she brought with her seamlessly.

A Chance Meeting, by Masterweaver (compiled here as Chapter 11.11).

  • Crossover with Doki Doki Literature Club! (more specifically as part of Doki Doki Literature Club Loops)
  • Recommended by: Wario Barker
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Rin, having already lived through her life many times for no clear reason, meets the girls of DDLC after Monika moves their character files to the ship's programming to escape Earth's destruction. As the Dokis figure out their new situation, Rin learns about the Infinite Loops.
  • Comments: I really liked this one. It provides an outsider's view on Rin's situation, gives Rin some much-needed company, veers straight into Tear Jerker territory at a certain point (though if you've seen Shelter this may start earlier, possibly even the moment Rin appears), and the ending...well, I'll let you find out how it ends. While not the first Loop-related snippet with Rin (her debut is here), I'd say no preparatory reading is needed for A Chance Meeting.
