    Rin Okumura
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/okumura_rin.jpg
Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto (Japanese, teenager), Akeno Watanabe (Japanese, child), Bryce Papenbrook (English, teenager) and Wendee Lee (English, child)

The protagonist and titular character. Rin and his twin brother Yukio were raised by Father Fujimoto Shiro. Something of a delinquent but with a good heart, he turns out to be the son of Satan. After discovering this and the death of his adoptive father, Rin has made it his goal to be a powerful exorcist, one strong enough to beat Satan. Is nice enough to be considered a cosmic joke on behalf of his blood father.

  • Accidental Misnaming: He just can't get Amaimon's name right.
  • The Ace: Konekomaru directly tells him that he is this for the Exwires.
  • Achilles' Heel: His tail and his demon heart, as Mephisto explains. A demon's heart is both a source of strength and vulnerability, since it's destruction means death, but only when it is exposed can a demon draw out their greatest power. Since Kurikara contains his subdued demon heart, he is able to fight with the sword simultaneously restraining and protecting his heart. When Kurikara broke, the demon heart returned to Rin in full, initially overwhelming him with power and killing him (he got better).
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In the manga his hair is pure black, the anime translated that color to dark blue.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Downplayed, but the anime shows Rin being injured and needing medical attention way more than in the manga. A good example is that in the anime, blocking Kuro's charge with his head gave him a nosebleed. Not so in the manga.
  • Adorkable: Oh boy, where do you start....? He is socially awkward, good natured, a bit of a goof, incredibly sweet...
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Rin grew up with zero friends because his inhuman strength would scare them off. He also was constantly harassed by bullies and called a demon.
  • Almighty Janitor: Rin has endurance and firepower beyond any of his classmates and most exorcists.
    • Shown in the anime when Amaimon easily curbstomped his classmates and high-ranking exorcists in the Vatican, Rin almost immediately defeats him if their battle wasn't interrupted. Amaimon. One of the Eight Demon Kings that no exorcist can defeat on their own.
    • Reduced but still present in the manga. Rin can't take on the Demon Kings at full power, but he's still stronger than most demons, is extremely durable, and can regenerate from injuries that would be fatal to a human. He's a huge contributor to the exwires continued survival when they end up in situations beyond their official rank, such as fighting the Impure King or the Illuminati.
  • Amazon Chaser: Judging from some of Rin's reactions to Shiemi's feats, he finds how strong she is quite attractive.
  • Animal Motifs: Acts a lot like a great big black cat. Kato has drawn him as a tiger person at least once.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Inverted since he's the older brother, but he's definitely this for Yukio. It's played for drama since this makes Yukio look down on Rin as much as up and makes it hard for Rin to be taken seriously by Yukio and others.
  • Anti Anti Christ: He's the son of Satan but he's a Nice Guy who wants to kick his birth father's ass.
  • Anti-Hero: The Disney variety due to his low social skills. He's slowly growing out of it.
  • Badass Adorable: Considering his Adorkable status and often clueless and honest actions that contradict his "Son of Satan" status he also falls under this. Then there's the way he likes to feed people...
  • Bad Liar: Incapable of telling a convincing lie, perhaps best demonstrated in the very first chapter when he tries, and fails, to lie about getting into another fight.
  • Berserker Tears: When Yukio defects to the Illuminati, and then shoots Rin repeatedly with real bullets, after a moment of total disbelief realizing that Yukio actually shot him, Rin flies into a demonic rage and attacks Yukio while crying.
  • Berserk Mode: After losing his mind in his fight against Amaimon at Mephyland, he'd black out and mindlessly attack if he had the sword drawn or was provoked. Shura tells him this is because he is afraid of the flames, which allows them to overpower him. Rin faces his fear when the flames start to "burn him out" as he tries to destroy the Impure King, but remembers that his friends trust him and accepts that he is the son of Satan. He does not lose control again until Yukio betrays and guns him down, leading Rin to fly into a blind rage and attempt to cut down Yukio with Kurikara. Ever since Rin's demon heart returned, his Berserk Mode has been replaced by the embodiment of his suppressed rage and lusts.
  • Betty and Veronica:
    • The rebellious and troublesome "Veronica" to Yukio's more reliable and gentlemanly "Betty" for Shiemi's "Archie". The roles kind of get switched later on: Rin matures and becomes more of a Nice Guy, while Yukio shows more of his repressed dark side.
    • Not to mention the "Archie" between Tsundere Izumo's "Veronica" and Girl Next Door Shiemi's "Betty", though this has been pretty much resolved by Rin's confession and Izumo's resolve to help Shiemi understand her own feelings.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: A genuinely nice guy who tries so hard to have friends and honestly does care for others. Just don't piss off the guy with Hell-Fire, Super Strength, and a tendency to forget himself when angry enough.
  • Big Brother Instinct: As a child, he was very protective of Yukio and would chase off people that would bully him. As they got older, Rin stopped looking after Yukio as much since he can now take care of himself and also wanted to look after himself, but Rin is still very protective of his younger brother.
"I would never hurt my younger brother!"
    • This is looking like a big factor in Rin's future growth. He understands his own avoidance of the truth hurt Yukio and he's willing to face his fears now if that's what it takes to make amends.
    • He was like this right from birth. He instinctively flash fries an Exorcist who is manhandling the newborn Yukio and it's implied that he imparted some of his flame to Yukio to save him from being stillborn.
  • The Big Guy: Since he is the strongest of the group with little else to offer Konekomaru recommends that he acts as a backup version of this.
  • Book Dumb: Very much so, especially when compared to Yukio, since while Yukio is a Teen Genius Rin is a former junior high school drop out. Downplayed compared to other shounen heroes to a more realistic level. He's not good with bookwork, but he's been improving as a later chapter shows that he went from getting 2% on a test (failing) to getting 68% (passing) in the same course.
  • Brutal Honesty: At times, since he hasn't had much experience interacting with others due to negative past experiences.
  • Bully Hunter: Heavily implied as the audience first sees him beating up a bunch of guys for killing/torturing pigeons, he always used to protect Yukio and even have a few flashbacks that show he mostly got into fights this way. Arguably influenced his decision to become an Exorcist; hostile demons can count as really big bullies since they target humans.
  • Cain and Abel:
  • Calling the Old Man Out: He wants to kill daddy Satan.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: As shown when Shura accidentally mixes up their drinks. A single can was enough to knock him out.
  • Character Development: In so many ways.
    • He started out much angrier and discontented than he is now. Although still insecure, he seems to be happier and a bit more easygoing. Though it is possible at least some of this is faked.
    • Rin was initially just as disgusted by his relation to Satan as everyone else and he tried his hardest to not be associated with his demonic heritage. But, he comes to understand that he must accept the fact that Satan is his father if he wants to truly becomes stronger. This is realistically shown to be easier said than done, when his own demon side had to remind him of his previous words.
    • After spending the entire series up to that point avoiding learning about his past and fearful of what he might find, Yukio's defection finally pushed him into facing everything for real.
    • He's displayed far more self control during the trip to the past than at any time previously, following Mephisto's instructions to not even try to change things despite how horrific he finds everything.
  • Child of Two Worlds: Rin's half-breed status (particularly his father's blood) drives a good chunk of the plot and Rin often wonders where he fits. Ucchusama even lampshades this by wondering if Rin is a human or a demon.
  • Childish Older Sibling: Rin is a childish, Book Dumb hot-head and is somewhat of a delinquent. In contrast, his younger twin brother Yukio is a polite, gifted scholar, and serves as one of Rin's teachers at True Cross Academy. This is later subverted in the manga, where, while both of them have issues with feeling inferior to the other, Rin eventually overcomes his, while Yukio's sanity degrades, and eventually results in him comitting a Face–Heel Turn.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: At times has strange behavior thanks to his No Social Skills. Some of it is also a result of avoidance behavior.
  • Color Motif: Blue, in different shades.
  • Cool Sword: His sword acts as both his Demon Heart and was a prized possession of Suguro's temple beforehand. It is also a Flaming Sword as a side effect of containing Rin's blue flames.
  • Cover-Blowing Superpower: In the beginning, few knew his heritage. He blows it in chapter 13 by using his blue flames.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Rin might not be the greatest at book work and often fumbles his words, but he's still the Son of Satan. His cheery attitude often hides someone who's very introspective and observant as well.
  • Cry Cute: Whenever Rin loses his smile and hits his lowest, his crying is utterly heartbreaking. Especially during the Heroic BSoD situation described below.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Thanks to Adaptation Dye-Job, Rin has blue hair with his blue eyes. The full release of his heart made his hair and eyes both the color of his flames in the manga.
  • Cute Little Fangs: As a half-demon he comes with a set of sharper than usual eyeteeth. Considering his character, they mostly just serve to enhance his rather adorable looks and personality. See below for when they don't.
  • Cute Monster Boy: Yes, he's the demonic bastard half-breed spawn of Satan who has the dreaded Blue Flames and can bench press cars. He's also incredibly cute and friendly.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite being a son of Satan, he is a nice guy.
  • Death Glare: Has one strong enough to make lesser demons back off. If he's doing this and his eyes have suddenly changed to be blue with red pupils, that's your cue to get out of there before he decides to break out his Blue Flames.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength:
    • Played Straight in the first episode of the anime, where Rin causes a series of disasters in an attempt to get his job. Completely forgotten in subsequent episodes, and no wonder...
    • Averted in the manga: Rin knows his strength well enough to function fully as a normal person (who just happens to have super strength) and never loses control of it even when angry. Word of God even says he has "clever hands", suggesting he's very deft and careful with his hands despite his strength.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?:
    • In the Anime, rescues a young girl from a tower of falling cans while on the job in the first episode... only to reveal he got fired for it. At least the girl's father thanked him for saving her.
    • In the manga, Rin saves all of the exwires' lives with his blue flames...only to be rejected for being the Son of Satan. Luckily the issues work out but OUCH.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Whenever Kato colours him, particularly early on, he looks freakishly pale. Considering his half-demon nature, go figure.
  • Enemy Within: His repressed anger and power manifests as this when his demon heart is returned and tries a Split-Personality Takeover in Chapter 98.
  • Enfant Terrible: Chapter 109 reveals him to be this when, mere moments after being born, he starts burning all nearby exorcists alive.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The audience is introduced to him punching out a punk in one blow, being called a demon as the entire group of delinquents flees, saying how they are more monstrous than him (with dead pigeons around him to prove it), looking at his bruised knuckles and realizing he's going to get scolded, then watching a pigeon fly off and wondering what he's doing. Setting up a good natured, strong guy with problems and a good awareness of himself. We then go on to see him interacting with others, showing a bit of a temper problem and how lost he is as to what he wants to do in life. And then he's the Son of Satan who just had his father figure get hit with a Death by Origin Story.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In Chapter 98, his hair turns white after having his Demon Heart released.
  • Expy: Of Wilhelm Grimm from the Terry Gilliam 2005 film The Brothers Grimm, which Kazue Kato likes. He's the most abrasive and hotheaded of two brothers who fight demons and dark creatures.
  • Familiar: His is a Mega Neko named Kuro who was inherited from Fujimoto Shiro.
  • Family Eye Resemblance:
    • According to Shura, Rin inherited his mother's eyes.
    • Once his full power was released, he began to display the same flaming irises as Satan when using his powers.
  • Family of Choice: After learning he's Satan's son, Rin makes clear he doesn't give a damn about Satan being his biological father; his one and true father is and will always be Shiro Fujimoto.
    • Played with in the manga, as Shiro is genetically identical to the body Satan was possessing when he fathered the twins, and is technically their uncle if one considers clones the same as siblings.
  • Fangs Are Evil: When Rin is pissed, has drawn Kurikara and has gone out of control, his fangs become more pronounced and look much more deadly. Later in the series his sharp teeth are given more emphasis when he's angry even when the sword isn't drawn.
    • His teeth getting larger and sharper has also become a sign of demon!Rin being close to the surface.
  • Faux Flame: Rin learns how to control what his flames will and will not burn.
  • The Fettered: Perhaps due to guilt about his dad's death or perhaps just due to his general personality, he refuses to kill or seriously injure humans. Shima cites this to Lucifer as Rin's biggest weakness and even tells Rin himself that he will have to be willing to do so in the future. This even extends to demons that used to be human but aren't anymore, specifically the zombies in the Illuminati arc, much to Yukio's intense frustration.
    • Later on, Rin's own inner darkness tells him that his desire to not hate anyone is holding him back from true power.
  • Fighting from the Inside: In Chapter 98, Rin fights off his berserk demon self that tries to take over his body.
    • Happens again when the horror and self hate he felt when witnessing his own birth gave his demon half a chance to take another shot at a takeover.
  • Foil: To Yukio. He has the friendly personality that everyone loves, but he's also Book Dumb and sometimes can act rather foolishly, contrasting Yukio's more aloof and intelligent personality.
    • He's increasingly looking like this to Satan too, both being incredibly powerful demons who's existence is a direct result of the Order’s secrets, but having vastly different upbringings and personalities.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The foolish to Yukio's responsible due to his Book Dumb and impulsive actions. At the same time, Rin is the one who's more mentally stable while Yukio falls under The Corruptible.
  • Friend to All Children: If The Movie has any say, Rin is very good with kids. An omake has him suggesting having enough kids for a soccer team.
  • Friendless Background: Much like Shiemi below, he didn't have real friends before coming to the cram school. In his case, it was an All of the Other Reindeer situation that his awkwardness and Super Strength didn't help with.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Rin is a name often given to girls in Japan, but a boy having it wouldn't be that weird.
  • Godzilla Threshold:
    • Crosses this in the first freaking chapter since he was told to not draw Kurikara...but chooses to anyways to try to save his foster father and get out of the Gehenna Gate. It only saves him from the Gehenna Gate.
    • Crosses it again in ch13 when he chooses to draw Kurikara to save his friends despite how that would probably get him killed by the Order. He narrrowly escapes that fate and succeeds at saving them...only for them all to reject him for his heritage for various reasons. The poor kid.
  • Goo Goo Godlike: Chapter 109 reveals he was in control of his Blue Flames and capable of incredible physical feats just after his birth. As a newly born infant, he was capable of killing grown exorcists and inflicted so much damage on the army of exorcists gathered to exorcise him that the Paladin of the time outright called a retreat.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Averted. Though at first glance he seems this way, Rin is surprisingly even tempered and less likely to truly lose his temper than the higher strung Ryuji or Yukio outside of combat. Rin only truly loses his temper if the Berserk Buttons mentioned above get pressed after the first two chapters.
    • An early example that drives this hope is when during one of their many arguments, Ryuji dares Rin to walk up to a nearby demon that is chained up for class and touch it without making it attack him to prove that he's serious about being an exorcist. Rin tells him no way, that he has no reason to risk his life for a petty argument.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Human and demon hybrid, the fact the demon in question is Satan is the source of the majority of Rin's problems and a good chunk of the plot.
  • Happily Adopted: Ask him about Fujimoto and you'll hear nothing but praise. Sure, there will be some grumbling about his old man but it's mostly positive. Which is why dissing him is a major Berserk Button, especially after his Heroic Sacrifice.
    • Later played with. While Rin truly does love Fujimoto and considers him his real father, he also has a tendency to look at the past with rose tinted glasses and let Fujimoto's Heroic Sacrifice color his memories of the man. They actually seem to have had a somewhat strained relationship while the man was alive.
  • Hates Their Parent: Rin hates his biological father Satan because he's the cause of his "true" father Shiro Fujimoto's Heroic Suicide.
  • Healing Factor: Rin gets stabbed, smashed, and all around abused, and still keeps going, everything healing up to the point it might as well not as happened. Chop off his foot? No problem! Shura mentions that Rin doesn't scar at all. While pulling off a Did You Just Scam Cthulhu?, Yukio says shooting Rin in the head would only keep him down for twenty minutes. Chapter 96 reveals Rin recovers from being shot in the head in seconds-to-minutes. This is also how Rin survives the return of his demon heart, which downright carbonizes him at first.
  • Heal It with Fire: Rin, when defeating the Impure King, chants a mantra to purify the surrounding area. With the Power of Friendship and True Companions in his heart, he ensured the flames would only destroy the infection and not harm the other people fighting.
  • The Heart: So far Rin has 1) connected with Shiemi and helped her move forward after her grandmother's death 2) managed to understand and see Suguro's point of view in regards to Satan 3) comfort Konekomaru in regards to his worth AND Rin's "danger" as the Son of Satan. He also is the first one to try to make people feel better if they are down and is very observant in regards to people's feelings.
  • Hellfire: An inheritance from his "father". Also is the only demonic flame that attacks both the physical form and the spiritual one, allowing for a total kill.
  • The Hero: He's the good-hearted protagonist that wants to fight evil and protect people.
  • Heroic Bastard: With his father being Satan and his Anti Anti Christ status it's only natural.
  • Heroic BSoD: On the eve of being locked up and sentenced to death while the Impure King is resurrected, as he can't draw his sword to help people, he wonders why Shiro saved him. When Shiemi arrives to break him out to help with the Impure King, he tells her maybe he's better off dead. Shiemi is horrified and insists she wants to help, but he loses his temper and his flames go out. She hugs him and shows him his flames didn't hurt her, which breaks him out of his BSOD. He still has trouble with his confidence but it improves as his friends tell him they trust him, ultimately allowing him to gain control of himself and his flames.
    • Becomes suicidal in Chapter 109 in response to learning his birth caused a massacre and having his worst fears about himself realized, leaving an opening for his demon self to try to control him.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: When alone and at his lowest, Rin has a tendency to insult and look down on himself.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • He's an amazing cook. A-ma-zing.
    • He also likes emotional drama (aka Shojo) manga. An early chapter starts with him apparently reading one and crying.
    • He's surprisingly good at connecting with and inspiring others.
    • Has proven on various occasions (the confrontation with Ryuji in the fourth chapter for example) to be surprisingly level headed and sensible at times.
    • Rin is not ignorant to Yukio's issues and in fact fairly quickly realizes a good chunk of what's bothering him. He also, however, realizes he's too close to the problem to help unless Yukio chooses to talk to him.
    • Rin's laid back and almost childish personality is something that will make him a very good exorcist since it helps protect him against demonic possession something he is not immune to (most likely due to the fact he's half human).
    • On a darker note, it seems his self worth issues and the idea that he shouldn't have been born significantly predate his learning about his demon heritage.
  • Hot-Blooded: He is among the most energetic and headstrong of the main cast. Played with as it comes from him being emotionally honest and impulsive, not by having a bad temper. Certainly has one, but not as bad as other characters (see Ryuji below).
  • Hunter of His Own Kind:
    • Mephisto calls him the Blue Exorcist, who's chosen fate is to hunt and exterminate his own kind.
    • It's a huge part of how he sees himself as well. When forced to fight a zombie, which is just a living person infected by a parasitic demon in this series' mythos, he refuses to attack, only evading or staying on the defensive. He later reveals to Konekomaru that he has to be someone who defends people.
  • I Am What I Am: After the defeat of the Impure King, he realizes he must accept the Satanic Flames inside him and his own heritage if he is to grow as a person and Exorcist.
  • Idiot Hero: Compare him to Yukio, who is his professor. The fact he tends to slack off doesn't help either. At the same time, Rin's not as dumb as others and even himself believe, being good at thinking on his feet and actually improving scholastically, abet slowly. But he IS still an idiot, per say.
  • In a Single Bound: Rin is incredible when he jumps. It's like he's got springs or freaking rockets instead of legs.
  • Indy Ploy: Rin reacts in the moment and comes up with very good ones when facing a crisis.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side:
    • Emotionally open (openly crying), enjoys cooking, honest to a fault and loves emotional drama in manga. He's seen making bunny rabbit apple slices in Chapter 80.
    • He has also proven to be very comfortable when confronted with something regarding his sexuality (the Transvestite Ghost) and apparently enjoyed crossdressing!
  • Iron Woobie: Has suffered a great deal from losing his dad and having his entire life turned upside-down, but he keeps living his life and trying to improve himself.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Chapter 73 reveals Rin thinks Shiemi likes Yukio and is willing to not truly confess so he doesn't get in the way between the two of them. He's very shocked when Shiemi reveals she doesn't like anyone romantically that he gives away his crush on her anyways.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He has a good heart and genuinely loves his friends but is more often than not a bit abrasive due to his poor social skills. Despite his rough nature and tendency to be blunt, he's a friendly guy at heart. He's gradually growing out of the jerk part as his social skills improve.
  • Kid Hero: He's technically a teen, but his childish personality could qualify him as this. Reconstructed as his cheerful, laidback attitude makes him resistant to mental break downs and demonic possessions. His childish antics also come across mostly because of his No Social Skills status; he's as emotionally mature as the rest, if not more so considering some hints.
  • Killer Rabbit: Ch 109 reveals he was this as a newborn. He wasn't even a minute old when he leapt at and killed an exorcist. He then went on to tear apart the entire army specially gathered to kill him.
  • Kill It with Fire: His modus operandi when fighting with demons. ...possibly a little too much.
  • Laser-Guided Tyke-Bomb: Is kept alive just to become a weapon to destroy Satan. Inverted since the ones who were raising him were good guys, and most of them had the good sense to be nice to him about it.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Both super strong and super fast, though he's sill in training to learn how to use it effectively.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: As revealed in flashbacks, Rin got the bad temper and rebellious streak of his adoptive father Shiro and the good heart and Adorkable personality of his mother Yuri. Shiro also taught him to cook rather than fight to help him control his strength and get him to think about who and what he's doing things for.
  • Like Parent, Like Spouse: When Mephisto takes him to see the past, Rin can't help but think his mother's younger self reminds him of his crush Shiemi.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Pre-series he was the only one in his family to not be an exorcist, and managed to grow up semi-normal. Even now he doesn't know as much as the rest who were raised in the know one way or another, something that contribute to him giving the impression of the standard Idiot Hero.
    • There are still other things that both he and Yukio don't know about regarding their heritage, Satan, their Dad, and the Order in general.
  • Luminescent Blush: When he blushes, he can reach this level of blush.
  • Made of Iron: He can tank a lot before he needs his Healing Factor to kick in.
    • He can survive getting shot in the face, and it won't keep him down for long.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • The kanji for Rin's name, 燐, means "Phosphorus". And said kanji has an interesting history behind it that also applies.
      • In addition, the Greek word for phosphorus, Φωσφόρος , literally means "light-bearer." In Latin, this is "lucem ferre," more commonly shortened to Lucifer. And this is also the name of the eldest son of Satan.
    • His last name also counts as Okumura is spelled "奥村" which can mean "Heart Village" or "The Heart of the Village".
    • It turns out he was named after Satan, who was originally called Rinka before growing an ego.
    • Also, the Ri in his name together with the Yu in his brother's name make their mother's name.
    • There's a good chance the name Okumura is connected to Oku-san, the retired exorcist who found Yuri in a junkyard and raised her.
  • A Mistake Is Born: No one wanted Satan's child to be born (aside from Yuri), and he knows it.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Comparing him to Ryuji, Yukio, and even Renzo, Rin doesn't seem to be very muscular, despite being far stronger than any of them. However, he's half-demon so his entire biological structure can be very different from a normal human'snote
  • Nature vs. Nurture: Falls solidly on the nurture side, as he is very much like his foster father. Thus he counts as a Upbringing Makes the Hero example. This is a good thing for Assiah as the other options are...far from pleasant. The flashback arc that reveals his mother also reveals that he's actually very much so like her meaning the nature part is also played straight.
  • Nice Guy: He is one of the sweetest guys you could ever encounter.
  • No Social Skills: Or more correctly, he's got the social skills of a six-year-old due to having no friends pre-series. He's been improving, but still comes across as an oddball thanks to it.
  • One Hero, Hold the Weaksauce: Demon hearts are dangerous for demons to use, in part since their physical form can't handle the strain of throwing out their full power. Rin, either as a half-demon or the Son of Satan, can keep Kurikara drawn forever if he wants without any ill effects.
    • When Kurikara is shattered, it is revealed that the sword acted as a Power Limiter without which his true power floods his body causing a Superpower Meltdown. This still applies however, because he was strong enough to survive his own power and exist with full access to his heart.
  • Pajama-Clad Hero: The majority of the Impure King incident (starting in the morning where he meets the Shima brothers) Rin is in what is ultimately just his pajamas. Yes, Rin defeated the Eldritch Abomination that is the Impure King like that in bare feet to boot.
  • Parting Words Regret: The last conversation Rin had with his father ended with Rin going You're Not My Father and Shiro slapping him for it. Made infinitely worse when Rin learns that him saying that was what made Shiro vulnerable to Satan's possession and forced him to kill himself to protect his sonnote . Needless to say, Rin feels incredibly guilty over this and when he sees Suguro saying something similar to his own father, Rin demands him to apologize before it's too late.
  • Playing with Fire: As the inheritor of the Blue Flames, this is obvious.
  • Pointy Ears: Part of his demon heritage. They get more pronounced when he uses more power (ie draws Kurikara).
  • Polar Opposite Twins: Rin is childish (at first glance), Book Dumb, and rude while Yukio is responsible, intelligent, and well mannered. On the flip side Rin is ridiculously sweet, domestic, and sincere, while Yukio is more of a subtle Jerkass and has difficulty being open or honest.
  • The Pollyanna: No matter how bad things are, Rin does his best to stay cheerful.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: After his sword broke and his demon heart returned to his body, Rin's hair has turned white. It actually works to his favor at one point, as Shiro doesn't recognize him after Rin accidentally walks into the past version of his home with Mephisto's key.
  • Power Limiter: It turns out his sword is this. When it gets broken in the manga, all the power inside floods back into Rin, and his body instantly starts degrading like Mephisto and Lucifer from it all, but thankfully not for long as he regenerates strong enough to handle the full flame.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Low level version, as his eyes gain a red pupil when he's accessing his demonic heritage.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni:
    • The energetic and passionate red oni to Yukio's reserved and serious blue. The tight-wound, nervous, and suppressed blue oni to Ryuji's headstrong and emotional red.
    • Rin is also a Blue Oni (reserved and hesitant) to Shiemi's Red Oni (eager and at times impulsive). Or anyone else - if it's not Yukio, Rin tends to be the Blue Oni.
  • Screw Destiny: Doesn't care about being a demon or a tykebomb—every time the subject is brought up, he just yells that he will become an exorcist.
  • Sensor Character: Rin is capable of sensing demons and can tell if they are powerful or not and even tell when they are entering a demon's territory. How far this ability goes is unknown at this point, and he's still in need of practice with it.
  • Shrinking Violet: Not as much as his brother, but Rin's very self-conscious. Hell, just look at his first meeting between him and Shiemi in ch3! Shiemi's the more outgoing and cheery one compared to Rin.
  • Sibling Triangle: With his brother Yukio towards Shiemi.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Rin hasn't shown even the slightest romantic interest in anyone but Shiemi. When under the effect of the Three Wise Monkeys, Rin openly admits that the only girl he wants to see naked is Shiemi.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: He can handle demons such as the Impure King but pre-series had no friends or real social experience...which shows.
  • Spanner in the Works: Mephisto openly tells him he can't predict or control what he does beyond a certain point.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye:
    • Of all people, Rin manages to pull this off in the Kyoto arc, disappearing from beside Shura and suddenly appearing nearby Tatsuma. Not even Shura knows how he did it.
    • It's not even the first time; he suddenly appeared with the exorcist team during the first reveal of Todo and the Impure King. No one in the team saw him coming.
    • Even before that, he popped up behind Yukio and bluffed himself on to the mission with Kuro.
    • Considering how fast he is (and how far he can jump), it's no surprise he can do this...the real shocker is how quiet Rin gets during this.
  • Stepford Smiler: Kato confirms that when things are tough, Rin tends to get more cheerful and upbeat in defense. Behind his optimistic and easygoing smiles, he has serious Survivor Guilt, questions why someone like him was saved through the Heroic Suicide of his adoptive father and at times thinks he shouldn't exist. Not to mention he constantly belittles himself and is flat out terrified of being alone. His self-doubts go back to before his awakening and are strong enough to shape his demon self, who flat out tells Rin he's everything he rejects in himself. Also turns out Rin has been looking to the future everyday in large part because he's terrified of the past.
  • Stock Shōnen Hero: He's a Hot-Blooded, simple-minded and energetic young hero who is on a quest To Be a Master. He often acts like a reckless idiot, but he has a good heart and can win almost anyone over with his personality. He cares deeply about his friends and is empowered by his wish to protect them. That said he's a reconstruction of this trope and plenty of original spins on this trope are inserted into Rin's character.
  • Street Smart: Contrasting his Book Dumb status Rin can be very perceptive and quick on the fly, and shows the ability to adapt to situations quickly. This contrasts him with Ryuji who is a notable aversion to this trope. This is noteworthy again since Rin is also suffering from No Social Skills at the same time.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He looks physically identical to the clone of Azazel Satan possessed at the time of his conception, but with his mother's black hair and Tsurime Eyes.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: As of ch58 he's shown the ability to use his flames to blow stuff up.
  • Super-Powered Evil Side: He can somewhat control his flames, but the longer he stays with his sword drawn, the more he loses control of himself. As shown in Chapter 14, he can completely stop acting like a human. Of course, that's before he accepts himself. By Inari, he's running around with Kurikara drawn for a long time with no bad side effects.
    • The full release of his heart brought it back with a vengeance. His demon side is now a fully realized facet of himself, lurking in the back of his mind, waiting for human Rin to weaken enough for him to take over.
  • Super Speed: More implied than shown (at least on-screen, see Stealth Hi/Bye above) but Rin is wicked fast.
  • Super Strength: The one power he's always had even before awakening is great strength. It caused...problems...at times. Mostly because, true to form, he tends to use it without thinking.
  • Supreme Chef: It is said to be his "best feature". Word of God is that he never messes up and though he doesn't have anything truly fancy in his repertoire, he gets it perfectly every single time.
  • Survivor Guilt: Rin has flat out issues due to Shiro sacrificing himself to save him; early on he says that the reason he chose to be a exorcist was to not have to be in that position again.
  • Team Chef: Counts as this during the camping trip, taking over from the clueless and inexperienced Shiemi and Izumo to serve up an amazing curry.
    • He was later put in charge of food for the exwires Christmas party too.
    • And he's been seen cooking for the group a few times in later chapters.
  • Team Mom: Constantly shown as The Heart, worries over everyone, and bugs his brother about his diet. Yukio has lampshaded more than once by calling Rin "mom" when he gets particularly naggy and worried.
  • Technicolor Fire: It's blue like natural gas flames though generally not to this extent.
  • Telepathy: He and Kuro are able to communicate using telepathy by reading Kuro's mind. He's also able to "hear" the thoughts of other demons, since he used sound to find the ghost-child in an amusement park but no one else could hear it, and some demons seem to respond to his thoughts as well, though that might also be a result of sensing his "killing intent" towards them for attacking his friends (like when the Leaper attacked Ryuji after the teacher left or when Godaiin was being harassed in school). In the anime, this extends to Ukobach and a boar demon as well.
  • Tiger Versus Dragon: A textbook tiger to Suguro's dragon.
    • Rin is lazy, impulsive, tries to solve everything on his own, and usually with brute force alone,(though this is possibly justified by the fact he didn't have any friends) while Suguro is rather smart, hardworking, and loves cleaning and meditation, not to mention he's an eloquent reciter, and team work means a lot to him.
    • At the same time, Rin is more relaxed and at times cool headed compared to Ryuji. Not to mention more adaptable and willing to see that brute force isn't always the solution; in the team, he's one of the first to listen to Konekomaru when he comes up with a plan.
  • To Be a Master: Rin desires to be like Shiro and become the highest class Exorcist. While not his only goal, it is a major one.
  • Transformation Trinket: Kurikara acts a bit like this as much as Power Limiter considering how Rin's appearance changes when he draws it. Rin's plenty powerful even with it sheathed though.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: Rin truly accesses his blue flames for the first time because he firmly believed the demon-possessed delinquent attacking him was going to kill him. He has a similar situation in regards to drawing Kurikara, where he has to either draw it or get dragged into Gehenna. Considering it coincides with him losing his foster father, one can't argue with how traumatic it really is.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Hinting at his strong will, occasional arrogance, and potentially dangerous nature. He inherited them from his mother.
  • Turn the Other Cheek: When Neuhaus attacks him, blaming him for blue night, Rin responds by offering him as many free hits as he wants while begging him to leave innocents out of his revenge.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: His main problem/strength. He is ridiculously strong and has the Blue Flames, but lack the control, knowledge, and experience to use them effectively. His raw power also sometimes acts as a crutch, giving him less incentive to learn the traditional exorcist methods.
  • Unstoppable Rage: He's prone to these in general, but his rampage through a mass of zombies in response to Izumo's distress in the Illuminati arc stands out.
  • "Well Done, Son!" Guy: To his brother Yukio. Ironically, Yukio has always envied his tougher, more outwardly confident brother.
    • To Father Fujimoto too. Rin's goal of becoming Paladin was all about doing something that he thought would've made his dad proud.
  • The Watson: Due to his previous Locked Out of the Loop status, as well as his Book Dumb status, Rin tends to ask the questions that the audience needs answered.
  • Wreathed in Flames: Whenever he uses it or draws Kurikara, the blue flames appear around him.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Anime only — Thanks to Adaptation Dye-Job, Rin now has blue hair. It is a show called Blue Exorcist after all. Considering he glows blue flames and is half-demon, it's justified.
    • True in the manga as well as of ch 98
  • You Killed My Father: He wants to kill his biological father, Satan, for killing his adoptive father, Shiro Fujimoto.

    Yukio Okumura
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/okumura_yukio.jpg
Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama (Japanese, teenager), Ayumi Fujimura (Japanese, child) and Johnny Yong Bosch (English)

Rin's younger twin brother, teacher, and a Middle First-Class Exorcist. Described as a genius. Polite, calm and mature on the surface. He's got issues.

He is the focus of the Spin-Off series Salaryman Exorcist The Sorrows Of Yukio Okumura.

  • Adorkable: Generally the calm and collected guy, but put him in a social situation and his basic shy nature comes to the front. Multiply this if it involves Shiemi.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Yukio turns his back on Rin in both the manga and first anime, but his betrayal in the first anime is motivated by a desire to save Rin by turning them both human and he is quick to sacrifice himself in Rin's place. His betrayal in the manga is motivated by his desire for power and he shoots Rin in the face for getting in his way.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Is fondly called "Yuki-chan" ("Yuki" in the dub) by Shiemi.
  • Always Second Best: Despite his higher rank, Yukio feels this way towards Rin and Shiro because he believes they are better people than he is.
  • Badass Bookworm: Very intelligent, top of his class, the main teacher for the cast, and very adept at kicking ass.
  • Beauty Mark: Has three of them and he's a quite embarrassed by them. An omake reveals he has quite a few more moles all over his body and he's ashamed of each and every one of them and is scared of them multiplying. He shares this trait with his mother.
  • Beneath the Mask: Underneath his cool & collected exterior, Yukio is emotionally volatile. He has a temper perhaps even worse than Rin's, is traumatized from the way he was raised, and has a deep well of self hatred that eventually consumes him.
  • Berserk Button: Many. Some are played for comedy, like his reactions to Rin acting childish or Shura's teasing. Others are more serious, like being called a demon or weak.
  • Betty and Veronica: The reliable and gentlemanly "Betty" to Rin's rebellious and troublesome "Veronica" for Shiemi's "Archie". Or so it starts.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Appears nice but is a very effective and ruthless exorcist. Has a serious temper like Rin but lacks Rin's laid-back demeanor and has difficulty managing his stress. Many characters remark how scary he looks when he's pissed. Drops the "nice" part after his Face–Heel Turn.
  • Big Brother Worship: Has always looked up to Rin, but with envy. Ties into his TheCorruptible status.
  • Bishie Sparkle: On occasion though mostly as jokes or imagine spots.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Downplayed. Despite Yukio making a show of being a polite, mature, and considerate Nice Guy, his real personality is more that of a Jerkass, which is seen in his condescending attitude towards Rin. As of his defection, the sheep's clothing is off and he's a full on Jerkass.
  • Bluff Worked Too Well: His mask of the perfect student and exorcist has prevented others from understanding him and his struggles.
    • His bluff against Hachirou was taken very seriously.
  • Bookworm: He loved to read and study as a kid.
  • Broken Ace: He's a prodigy, excelling in school and his profession. However, he hates himself for being weak, both physically (frail and sickly as a child) and mentally (resents his brother and father for his training to become an exorcist despite knowing it was his choice).
  • Bully Magnet: Yukio was often bullied and beaten up by other kids as a child.
  • Byronic Hero: Yukio embodies the archetype. He's very intelligent, skilled, charismatic and calculating. He's also incredibly self-absorbed, melancholic, emotionally conflicted, self-critical and self-destructive. Yukio is constantly dwelling on his angst over feeling unloved by his adoptive father and living in the shadow of his "special" brother. He gradually isolates himself from everyone as he focuses on seeking power and his actions become increasingly vicious.
  • Cain and Abel: Played with. He looks like the good son of the pair, as a polite student and successful exorcist, but was pointing his guns at his brother by the third episode/second chapter. They settle into a Vitriolic Best Buds relationship until Yukio shoots Rin and switches sides, and declaring he will become stronger than his brother. Once with the Illuminati he accepts weapons and information that would let him fight Rin more effectively. That said, he knew simply shooting Rin with regular bullets wouldn't kill him and doesn't seem to want Rin dead so much as he wants to force an acknowledgment of his own strength.
  • Cassandra Truth: To get Hachiro to believe him in Chapter 77, Yukio points his gun at Rin saying "sorry, brother, but I want to be strong" and "I don't need your help anymore". When Rin yells that Yukio won't shoot, Yukio shoots Rin in the head and chest. It turns out Yukio used nutrient bullets so Rin could quickly recover and stab Hachiro, so Rin forgives Yukio. Fastforward to Chapter 96. Yukio decides to defect to the Illuminati. Rin tries to stop him, and Yukio says the same words and shoots Rin in the same spots. Rin initially thinks they're nutrient bullets but when the bleeding doesn't stop, he realizes that they're real and that Yukio was telling the truth all along.
  • Child Soldier: He started training to be an exorcist when he was seven years old.
  • Clueless Chick Magnet: He gets a lot of attention from women In-Universe, but he's usually too wrapped up in his studies to realize what their romantic overtures mean. Not that he cares.
  • The Comically Serious: At times, due to his tendency to be as serious as possible. This comes out way more in extra materials like the Salaryman Exorcist spinoff and the Question Corners. At the same time, he does like gag manga.
  • Compulsive Liar: Yukio has a tendency to lie even when it puts him at a disadvantage out of a need to hide perceived weakness.
  • The Corruptible: Toudou taunts Yukio by saying his self-loathing makes him more likely to become a demon.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Chapter 8 establishes he has a surprisingly hefty stash of spare glasses, and that's not even getting into the amount of bullets he carries. The length of the conflict in Inari is underscored when he runs out of bullets.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He shows shades of wisecracking, although it's more prominent in the English dub of the first anime courtesy of Alex von David's script and Johnny Yong Bosch's performance. Took a level in snark since defecting, best seen in how he challenges Lucifer to kill him and promptly goes "I knew it, you can't do it, too bad" after Lucifer fails.
  • Declaration of Protection: Became an exorcist because Shiro offered him training so he could protect Rin, and swears on his father's grave that he'll protect his older brother. However, since Rin is physically stronger than him and their enemies more powerful, Yukio cannot live up to this. Eventually Yukio gives up, believing that even if Rin was caged for his own protection, Rin would just break the cage to help others.
  • Demonic Possession: In the anime, by his father, because he is the only vessel that won't blow up immediately. In the manga, only his left eye is possessed by Satan. According to the Illuminati Yukio himself is not a good candidate for full possession. Time will tell if that's a lie.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Already reeling from learning about the Order's human experimentation in Section 13 and not coming closer to what he really wanted to know, Yukio finds himself at Shiemi's house. He starts to confide in her how he feels alone, but when she says Rin is worried about him, Yukio yells and slams her on the floor. Immediately horrified at what he's done, he runs away and shoots himself in the head — only to find he can't as the bullet burns, his eyes turn blue, and a voice mocks him for trying to kill himself. This all happened in just one chapter. He tracks down Mephisto to demand answers, is rebuffed in a particularly dickish manner, gets blamed for Mephisto being shot because he had his gun out when it happened, is arrested and outed as his eyes turn Satan-y blue, and ends up in a cell to stew in his thoughts with Satan for company.
  • Determinator: Even more so than his brother it turns out. He's gone to extreme lengths to protect his family, with not so great results when he failed.
  • Did You Just Scam Cthulhu?: Tricks Hachiro into removing Shura’s contract that ends her life at 30. Yukio did this by offering to persuade Shura into having a child with him, killing her after she turns 30, and founding an organization to carry this on after he dies. All in exchange for Hachiro’s regenerative powers and demon sword. He guns Rin down and talks about how he desires power, which impresses Hachiro. Hachiro proceeds to remove Shura’s contract, but before he can transfer it to Yukio, Yukio calls out to Rin, who stabs Hachiro through the gut and congratulates Yukio on the ruse.
    • After the Illuminati offers him two pistols that are imbued with anti-demon power and tell him that he is a fireproof human that cannot be possessed with a mashou in his eyes from Satan, he asks Lucifer to confirm the reason he wanted him in the Illuminati. As soon as Lucifer says that Yukio is merely a window for Satan, Yukio intentionally triggers the Morinas Contract he was forced to sign fifty chapters before. Since Shima relayed a message from the Contract’s author saying that it can be used as a weapon, the Morinas Contract summons two of the strongest Azazel kin demons to protect Yukio. Yukio immediately tells them to destroy the Illuminati’s airship. He mocks Lucifer for ever thinking that he'd seriously join them, saying he always planned to strike back after he got what he wanted.
  • Die or Fly: Deliberately tries to invoke this trope in order to understand his power by putting himself into increasingly dangerous scenarios. He starts with attempting to drown himself, which fails. Then he walking off of a multistory building, but blacks out and wakes up unharmed with fire around him. Frustrated, he points a gun at his head and demands whatever is causing it to "show itself". He's interrupted by a phone call before he can shoot.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Rin and Shiemi repeatedly try to tell Yukio they are worried about him because they can tell he's going through something and won't talk about it. Unfortunately, Yukio takes their offers of help as them looking down on him as weak, which causes him to push them away more.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Shura calls him "four-eyed chicken". It later gets upgraded to "four-eyed lady killer".
  • Empowered Badass Normal: In Chapter 30 (& Episode 23 of the first anime), Yukio shows signs he's inherited something from his demon heritage. In the anime, he ends up becoming a demon like Rin. In the manga, it's more complicated. His apparent "powers" (namely his eyes turning Satan-shaped and blue that channel flames) are Satan manifesting in his eyes, predominantly his left eye, to prevent Yukio from dying. However, the Illuminati later tells him that he is resistant to any fire, whether black, blue or red, allowing him to wield certain dangerous weapons normal humans can't.
  • Expy: Of Jakob Grimm from the Terry Gilliam 2005 film The Brothers Grimm, which Kazue Kato likes. He's the most intellectual and levelheaded of two brothers who fight demons and dark creatures, who also wears glasses and is often Adorkable.
  • Fake Defector: He makes it look like he's defected from the True Cross Order and followed Shima to the Illuminati, but his real plan was to kill Lucifer and destroy Illuminati from the inside after deciding that the True Cross Order couldn't be trusted to get the job done.
  • Foil:
    • To Rin: The brains to Rin's brawn. His colder and pessimistic attitude contrasts with Rin's friendly and optimistic outlook.
    • To Ryuji: Both high-achieving students on scholarship at True Cross Academy. However, when faced with difficulty on achieving their goals, Bon talked to his friends for help and eventually decided to become Lightning's apprentice to learn what it's like to work for someone, while Yukio pushed people away and intentionally put himself into fatal situations to understand his power.
    • To Toudou: Both exorcists with family history in the profession who felt inferior to said family. Both eventually turned traitor and defected from the Order. However, Yukio ultimately rejected the Illuminati.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Yukio turns on Lucifer after Lucifer gives him weapons and knowledge.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The responsible to Rin's foolish because he is a good student who prefers logical choices over emotional choices. However, Yukio is the one who's the more mentally fragile while Rin is the one able to cook and play homemaker.
  • Freak Out: Following an arduous battle with Toudou, Toudou regenerates from pieces on the ground and grabs him with a disembodied hand telling Yukio that his self-loathing is the first step to becoming a demon, and that Yukio's true nature is a demon. Bullets and screaming ensue.
    • Many chapters later he finally manages to bring out the power in his eye and has another one of these in the form of tracking down Mephisto, demanding answers, and aiming his gun at him when he didn't get them.
    • To some degree chapters 92-93 overall. He finds out his adopted dad's history and reacts violently by chucking the computer at a tree. He goes to Shiemi to calm down but blows up at her when she inadvertently says the wrong thing. He then flees her house and shoots himself, leading to the above further Freak Out.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: In the Spin-Off he reveals that he has boxers with cats all over it.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He envies Rin's demon powers, especially his regenerative healing.
  • Guile Hero: Since he's often at a physical disadvantage, Yukio uses his wits and trickery to outfox physically stronger opponents.
  • Guns Akimbo: Since he's ambidexterious this happens at times like the anime trailer shows.
  • The Gunslinger: As a Dragoon Meister, he uses guns.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: He tries to hide it, but when he's provoked, he gets angry fast — and is willing to use his guns.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Subverted, in that he was too sickly to receive any demonic power despite being Rin's twin. He's regularly tested and no one can find anything. The Illuminati confirms these findings and also say that he is also unsuitable for possession. He doesn't take the news well.
  • Happily Adopted: Until Fujimoto died, he was just as happy with the situation as Rin. Later Played With as it turns out Yukio has a lot of issues from the exorcist training Shiro gave him and feels like he was The Un-Favourite.
  • Heroic Bastard: Like his brother above; his father is Satan. However the "heroic" part is up for debate. Trope fully dropped upon his defection.
  • Heroic BSoD: When he learned about Shiro's true origins and the shock, together with his long term stress and exhaustion, set him on a downward spiral.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: His Broken Ace feelings and self-loathing can easily turn him into the very thing he fights. Lampshaded by Mephisto as he quotes the saying while observing Yukio and Rin. This is picking up steam as he defects to the Illuminati and arms himself with weapons known to erode the wielder's mind, with only their guarantee that he's immune.
  • Hidden Depths: Reads Jump Square every month and even likes gag manga, of all things.
  • His Own Worst Enemy: About all of Yukio's problems come from his feelings of inferiority towards Rin and his unwillingness to talk about his issues with anyone because he would see it as a sign of weakness.
  • Hot Wings: In the anime following his possession by Satan.
  • I Cannot Self-Terminate: Because of Satan infesting his left eye, Yukio can't die no matter how much he wants to kill himself. Since he sees no other way to escape Satan's possession, Yukio wants to force Rin to kill him.
  • I Hate Past Me: Yukio hated how he was a "sniveling crybaby".
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: Yukio is obsessed with obtaining strength and power so no one can call him weak and he can prove he's superior to Rin.
  • Improbable Age: He is the Exwires' teacher and Rin's younger twin brother. Deconstructed since the effects this would have on a real person is shown.
  • Interrupted Suicide: After reading Lightning's files, Yukio teetered extremely close to a breakdown until Shiemi revealed that Rin was worried about him. He then fully broke down, pushing Shiemi and running away before aiming his gun at his head and pulling the trigger. However, Satan disintegrated the bullet and mocked him for trying to kill himself.
  • Jerkass Realization: After getting seriously injured in Aomori, Yukio thinks about how the people around him care for each other, and how he's so obsessed with himself that he can't see anyone else. Even though he says he can't go on like this, he does not change.
    • When he gets to the Illuminati he doubles down on it, even calling himself evil.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Though he pretends otherwise, this is what Yukio actually is underneath his masks. Pity his significant emotional issues are getting in the way.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: As the manga progresses, Yukio's actions and methods become more and more extreme and highly questionable. This comes to a head when he points a gun at Suguro's head after overhearing he and Lightning were involved in the death of one of the monks that worked for Fujimoto. Not long after that, Yukio makes a full-on Face–Heel Turn by defecting from the Order.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: He knows it, and it doesn't end well. He becomes increasingly desperate for information about his and Rin's origins, to the point of threatening Ryuji for it. Ironically, finally gaining access to some new information like he's wanted for so long sent him into a downward spiral to his Despair Event Horizon.
    • It turns out Mephisto deliberately kept him in the dark for reasons only known to him. When Mephisto sends Rin to the past to learn about their origin, Rin asks why he didn't send Yukio instead since Yukio was the one who was obsessed about learning the truth, and Mephisto implies that he tried sending Yukio back in another timeline, but it only made things worse.
    • Hypocriticaly, he locked Rin out of the loop years before the series began as he never told Rin that he was training to be an exorcist. Admittedly this was originally probably because Shiro told Yukio not to tell Rin anything, but he's continued to some degree even after it ceased to be an issue. For example he never informed Rin that Mephisto is a demon despite it being common knowledge among exorcists.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: Keeping secrets from his brother for so long has taken an enormous toll on Yukio's ability to open up to others, especially Rin, and set the stage for his later emotional collapse.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Yuki or "Snow". Shows his more cool-headed and smart approach to things, as well as his fragile mental state.
    • The time travel arc shows us that Yuri once called Shiro a Yukiotoko (Yeti), heavily implying Yukio was named after Shiro in a roundabout way.
  • Minored In Ass Kicking: Much to his older brother's surprise, he is a formidable gunman in addition to his academic studies. He's also shown to know formal martial arts.
  • Muggle Born of Mages: Yukio is also a Half-Human Hybrid son of Satan, but he never showed any demonic powers while growing up.
  • Mutual Envy: Rin envies Yukio because he's smarter and more experienced than him and Yukio got to be personally trained by their father while Rin was kept in the dark. Unknowingly to Rin, Yukio is way more jealous of him. Yukio had to go through arduous exorcist training from a very young age while Rin was allowed to have a relatively normal life until their father died. He also envies his brother's more brave and confident personality that somehow always makes things go his way. Yukio also envies Rin's raw power and healing.
  • Near-Rape Experience: Hachiro forces Shura through Mind Manipulation into nearly doing this to him in Chapter 77, but thankfully Rin intervened.
  • No-Sell: He's immune to the Rin's blue flames, along with all kinds of fire.
  • No Social Skills: Not as bad as Rin but Yukio doesn't understand most ordinary social norms, like texting ahead when you are going to be late and what reaction he should make in regards to a prank.
  • Overworked Sleep: Yukio is spotted nodding off in a chair more than once.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Yukio considers himself evil and deliberately targets the Illuminati.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: With Rin. Yukio is as responsible, intelligent, and well mannered while Rin is childish (at first glance), Book Dumb, and rude. However, it's Yukio who's more of a Jerkass while Rin is ridiculously sweet.
  • Properly Paranoid: He always suspected there was more to his and Rin's story than what he was told, and he was right.
    • He was also concerned about Shiro's struggle with Satan, which Shiro refused to come clean about.
  • Protagonist Journey to Villain: Yukio is introduced in the manga as Rin's smarter and more mature brother, but over time the audience is shown Yukio has problems with envy and self-loathing. These flaws slowly push Yukio towards a Face–Heel Turn over the course of over seventy chapters (six months in-universe), taking up a huge part of the plot.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Rin's red being more controlled and cautious. Reversed when he does his Face–Heel Turn as he's much more unstable than his brother.
  • The Resenter: Towards Rin because he feels like Rin was given a more privileged life and that his position as the "only" one able to "protect" Rin, and all the extra work and stress that comes with it, is unfair. Comes to a head in chapter 96 where Yukio says "you were the perfect one", after finally airing his resentment and belief that Shiro didn't love him like he did Rin.
  • Sanity Slippage: Yukio acts increasingly erratic as the series progresses, doing things like walking off a building to intentionally invoke Die or Fly, pointing a gun to his own head for the same reason, and covertly attempting to take Hachiro's power. Things come to a head in a series of chapters where, in an attempt to learn more about where he and Rin came from, he points a gun at Bon, actually gets results from Lightning but falls into despair from what he finds, blows up at Shiemi, attempts to kill himself (and fails due to Satan), demands answers from Mephisto (who refuses to tell him anything), and points a gun at Mephisto from backstage during a televised press conference. Culminates with Yukio defecting to the Illuminati after shooting Rin repeatedly.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Whenever he wants to be imposing.
  • Scholarship Student: Mentioned only at the beginning, but Yukio had to get into True Cross Academy via this due to having a poor background. He managed to be the top scorer for all the students entering the school.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Supernatural Powers!: Soon after confirming he is effectively unkillable due to Satan occupying his eye, he uses that and Lightning's Morinas contract to annihilate the Illuminati's base because he had no use for them. And because he could.
  • Ship Tease: With Shiemi to begin with. Increasingly gets teased with SHURA in later chapters.
  • Shrinking Violet: When he was a kid he was not as assertive as he is now and it still shows up sometimes. In fact, his inability to open up to others that comes from this is the source of the majority of his problems.
  • Sibling Triangle: With his brother Rin towards Shiemi.
  • Slasher Smile: has this expression on a Jump SQ cover.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: One of the most book-smart members of the cast and has worn glasses since he was very small.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Is an exorcist prodigy and a very skillful Dragoon and Doctor, but didn't really develop friendships and is still enough of a Shrinking Violet that he tends to fumble in regards to more casual social situations. Deconstructed as this in part leads to his Sanity Slippage and Face–Heel Turn as he doesn't understand he can rely on others to help him.
  • Sore Loser: Yukio's Fatal Flaw. He hates being second, especially to Rin. Linked to his status as The Resenter.
  • Specs of Awesome: He is an effective exorcist and a professor.
  • Stepford Smiler: He hides his resentment and jealousy towards Rin very well. However, during the series he starts losing his ability to hide that something's wrong, as Rin and Shiemi feel that he's hiding something big. After Yukio launches into maniacal laughter in a conversation with Rin and acts as if nothing happened, Rin feels "something is wrong".
  • The Stoic: Yukio has a much better control over his emotions than his brother however unlike many cases this turns out to be a bad thing, as repressing your feelings makes it easier for demons to take advantage of them than if you wear your heart on your sleeve. Shura even tells Yukio that he is far more likely to be possessed by demons than Rin.
  • Stoic Spectacles: As he is very self-controlled. Becomes ScaryShinyGlasses when he loses control.
  • Summon Magic: Though not having a meister as a Tamer, he summons a group of Naiads to imprison Saburota Toudou in a sphere of water. Unfortunately due to his inexperience, Toudou immediately escapes. He uses the Naiads again on himself in an attempt to trigger his eye change but is unable to sustain the summon before he gets exhausted or knocked out.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He had the nickname "Crybaby" when he was younger for a reason, now not so much.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: As the manga goes on, Yukio gradually loses himself to his feelings of inferiority, anger and envy towards Rin, eventually dropping his Nice Guy act altogether.
  • Tsundere: Familiar version. Very conflicted about Rin, but also loves him. As of his defection, he's apparently decided he hates and envies his brother too much to love him anymore.
  • The Un-Favourite: He feels like he was this to Shiro, at least. Yukio takes the fact that Shiro kept Rin in the dark about the world of exorcists as proof that Shiro only loved Rin as a son while he considered Yukio a mere tool to be trained to protect Rin.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Compared to his present-day self, Yukio used to be much more emotionally open and happy. Unfortunately Yukio views his younger self with disgust for being a weak crybaby.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: Toudou has an unhealthy interest in him. Lucifer has taken an interest in Yukio as well, and is willing to awaken his dormant powers to "save" him. Later revealed that Satan can possess his left eye.
  • Wham Line:
    • Just give me your flames won't you!note
    • I don't need you anymore.note
  • Wise Beyond His Years: Rin's younger brother and already smart enough to be a teacher, doctor, and experienced exorcist. Eventually Deconstructed as he's not as wise as he acts, being ultimately still an unsure teenager underneath it all.
  • Workaholic: He juggles being a top level scholarship student at a prestigious school with being a full time exorcist and being a teacher at the exorcist cram school. Extras tell us he averages 4 hours of sleep per night.
  • Wreathed in Flames: When possessed by Satan in the anime, the blue flames surround him.
  • You Are What You Hate: He's heavily implied to fear the manifestation of demon traits in himself despite the envy he feels over Rin's powers, regularly having himself tested for any sign of his demon blood getting stronger. He was actually thrilled when the Illuminati confirmed he was as human as he'd always been told he was.

    Shiemi Moriyama
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/moriyama_shiemi.jpg
Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa (Japanese) and Christine Marie Cabanos (English)

The daughter of the owner of the Exorcist Supply Shop (Futsumaya) who loves plants. Good-natured and sweet. Demonstrates extensive knowledge of plants. Used to be seen only in a kimono and still has a tendency to wear them. The Love Interest for both Yukio and Rin. Also, quickly takes a major leap in badass and becomes the second strongest member of the team after Rin.

  • Adaptational Wimp: Because the anime cut off before she received her Character Development that allowed her to take a level in badass, she doesn't have as many moments to shine.
  • Adorkable: As a result of being very cute and terribly awkward around people.
  • And I Must Scream: Chapter 83 retroactively reveals the entire incident where the larvae controlled her so Amaimon could provoke Rin into a fight during the progression exam was this for her.
  • Badass Adorable: Not only is Shiemi a very cute and sweet girl with an equally adorable companion, but they are also the most effective tamer/demon team of the group and the most versatile members period being able to cover healing, defense and offense equally well.
  • Barrier Warrior: She uses Niichan to grow a tree barrier to hold back a Naberius during the Page exam, and again to protect Bon from the portrait demons in the Seven Mysteries Arc. Summons a forest to protect herself and the Exwires from getting incinerated by Rin's demon side.
  • Belated Love Epiphany: In Chapter 99.2, seeing Rin being taken over by his demon side made Shiemi realize how terrified she is of the possibility of losing him forever. With some help from Izumo, Shiemi fully understands she has fallen for Rin. This makes her break down in tears because she thinks it's "too late" to let him know how she feels now that the Grigori Sedes is going to take her away.
  • Betty and Veronica: She's the sweet and friendly "Betty" in a Love Triangle with Tsundere Izumo's "Veronica" for Rin's "Archie". However, she is completely oblivious to this.
  • Big Eater: Is the only one during the camping trip to ask for seconds and spends the day looking around Kyoto mostly eating various things (and even requests only to be able to eat food at the start!).
  • Caring Gardener: She's the trope image. Ever since she was a young child, Shiemi loved gardening. While Shiemi is a sweet girl, she's also painfully shy and never ventures out of her grandmother's garden until Rin and Yukio intervene. She becomes an Exwire, but still loves plant life and her knowledge in gardening can be useful on occasion.
  • Character Development: Goes from a Shrinking Violet barely able to go to school without shaking uncontrollably to a Plucky Girl, who, with her powerful familiar, is able to fight with the best of them.
  • Chaste Hero: Bewildered by romance and love. Initially says she's "too young" for romance. Izumo gives her shoujo manga to help her understand romance after Rin asks her out. Though she turns down Rin because she wants to work on herself, she later realizes that she loves Rin but now says it's "too late".
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Nicknames plants and other things (like calling a jacuzzi "pink awa awa") and tends to fall under Comically Missing the Point more than once.
  • Color-Coded Eyes: Her green eyes reflect her nature motif and powerful spiritual ability.
  • Combat Medic: She's the only one in the main group capable of healing and utilizes this skill multiple times. She can also kick some serious ass.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Izumo laments that she can't believe she's friends with someone like Shiemi, who's "as shameless as a weed", she thinks it's a pep talk and vows to become "as strong as a weed".
  • Clueless Dude Magnet: She has no idea that she has many male admirers.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Early on she tripped multiple times. Since changing away from her kimono for exorcist duties, this has changed.
  • Damsel in Distress: During her first appearance she was possessed and needed saving, at least partially from her own misplaced guilt. This doesn't happen again (barring the incident with Amaimon).
  • Earthy Barefoot Character: When we first meet her, she is seen gardening barefoot and getting her feet - and rather elaborate kimono - quite dirty. She apparently likes doing it that way since her childhood, although she wears shoes otherwise.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: The growth of her hair coincides with her development into a badass Plucky Girl.
  • Extreme Doormat: Acted like this in the beginning because of her belief that doing lots of stuff without expecting thanks is how friends treat friends. She grew out of it.
  • Familiar: Has one named "Nii-chan," a small, cute plant demon. It's really useful.
  • Fangirl: Of Yukio. Heart-eyes and everything. She slowly gets over it though still admires him.
  • Flower in Her Hair: After she grows her hair out of its bob she uses flower based hairclips to keep her bangs out of her face. Considering that Nii-chan spends most of his time hiding in her hair they might count as being a sentient "flower in her hair" as well.
  • Foil: To Izumo since while both are tamers but she is friendly and humble, as oppossed to Izumo's abrasive and proud personality. Even their character designs and hair/eye colors are opposite of each other.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Mostly towards any plants, though demons work too.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Very girly and sweet, loves flowers, but has no trouble getting dirty and is a Big Eater. Not to mention is the strongest of the group after Rin.
  • Green Thumb: Why she has a Green Man familiar; plant power!
  • Hair Antennae: That almost make her look like a bug.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Unlike Ryuji, (the only other Blonde - though dyed - of the main cast) hers is pure gold and pure kindness.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: The guys are utterly gobsmacked when they see her wearing something other than her modest, concealing kimono.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Called herself useless alot when she didn't have her familiar.
  • Hidden Buxom: Her kimono hid her figure considerably, as seen when she first appears wearing her school uniform. It's complete with Gainaxing.
  • Hikikomori: At first, she stayed in her garden all day. This was before Rin reminded her of her interest in seeing more of the world.
  • I Am Who?: There are several hints throughout the manga that there is a secret to Shiemi's identity and powers that she doesn't know herself. Apparently, being revealed some of it is so bad that she decides to quit being an exorcist.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Her main motivation is to make friends.
  • Ill Girl: As a result of Demonic Possession, her legs were weak.
  • Innocent Flower Girl: She's still kind and she still has plenty of knowledge on plants, flowers and the like. She also lives at a herbs/plant shop.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Mainly towards Rin; Shiemi's lack of social skills mixed with Rin's lack of social skills along with her ignorance to his situation and feelings causes this. She's gotten better since the Kyoto arc when she acknowledged her shortcomings there.
  • Lethal Chef: Subverted. The sandwiches she made in Chapter 50 were basically just some herbs between bread and even Yukio couldn't pretend they tasted good, but it's later revealed that these herbs were what kept the group from getting addicted to the Inari food like all the tourists.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: To Yukio. Chapter 44 reveals that being with Shiemi is the only time he feels at peace.
  • Love You and Everybody: In Chapter 73, Shiemi tells Rin that she likes him and Yukio. To Rin's surprise, Shiemi denies it when asked if she has a crush on Yukio as she meant she likes them both as friends. Although, Shiemi soon realizes that Rin is telling her he likes her romantically.
  • Loving a Shadow: She used to believe that Yukio was perfect and has always admired him for it, but after witnessing an argument between him and Rin she realizes that that's not the case.
  • Luminescent Blush: Blushes in almost every panel she's in.
  • Master of the Mixed Message: Rin is convinced Shiemi has a crush on Yukio, but it's a bit difficult to tell the true nature of her feelings because she's kind and sweet to everyone, openly says she likes all her friends and gets easily embarrassed in general. In Chapter 73, Shiemi makes clear her feelings for Yukio are merely admiration and she doesn't feel romantic love for anyone, which comes as a shock for Rin.
  • Nice Girl: One of the friendliest members of the cast.
  • The Nicknamer: With herbs and other plants. She once failed a test because she didn't use their real names.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Shiemi often ends up too close for comfort, much to Rin's confusion and Izumo's chagrin.
  • No Social Skills: In the beginning, she has little to no social experience because of her sheltered upbringing. As a result, she repeatedly fails in trying to properly befriend Izumo. She finally suceeds in Chapter 32.
  • Oblivious to Love: She genuinely doesn't notice all the love triangles that involve her. Justified by the fact she was born very sickly and wasn't allowed to go outside much. Then her grandmother died and she became obsessed with caring for her garden.
  • Plucky Girl: As part of her character development. She strives to be as determined "as a weed" and tries not to let anything keep her spirits down for too long.
  • The Pollyanna: Not even the Alpha Bitch can upset her.
  • Prone to Tears: She tends to tear up easily over sad things (generally involving Rin or Izumo).
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Her familiar, Nii-chan, is the cutest plant demon you'll ever see.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: She's cute in general, but when all dressed up in her formal kimono she's stunning.
  • Shrinking Violet: At first, she was very shy and withdrawn. She grows out of it and even before she did, she shows signs in her debut chapter of being more outgoing than her shyness first allows.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Shown when she completely explodes at Rin and Yukio when they start arguing infront of her. They were both shocked.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Even though she's slow to realize it, Shiemi is attracted to the best qualities of Rin's personality.
  • Squishy Wizard: Without her familiar, she's pretty defenseless.
  • Summon Magic: She's able to summon a baby Green Man with no training, something that surprises everyone.
  • Tareme Eyes: To emphasize her sweet, passive personality.
  • Tender Tears: In her debut chapter over her grandmother.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: She's the girly girl to Izumo's tomboy. It's because she's sweeter than Izumo and her tendency to wear kimono.
  • Trauma Button: After the experience of being taken over by the Chuchi larvae, meeting Amaimon again brings back some very bad memories for Shiemi.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Later on with Izumo, though the vitriol really only applies to Izumo because Shiemi is endlessly friendly.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: Shiemi does understand familial love, but she has yet to grasp the concept of romantic love. When Rin asks her to be his girlfriend, Shiemi questions what is the difference between liking someone as a friend and as a lover. Izumo tries to help her figure it out by making her read tons of Shoujo manga.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Does this to herself in Das Stärkste Gefängis when she realizes that she was so focused on her own issues that she didn't think about how Rin felt.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: After getting her school uniform she wears stockings that show a patch of skin between them and her skirt. It's quite the contrast with her kimono.
