• The fight at St. Florent. A corporal, supported by armed soldiers, attempts to force Peter Berrier to join the army. Berrier, supported by his poorly-armed friends, refuses. It ends with the enraged townspeople defeating the soldiers, capturing the barracks, and taking the colonel prisoner.
