• The climax of The Steel Remains has a outnumbered group of soldiers, our three heroes, and a small army of Dwenda coming to kill them. The Dwenda are teleporting mysterious Fair Folk who terrify regular humans and even the Kiriath with their mysterious powers as well as complete insanity. Our heroes do not beat them with tactics, superior skill, or righteousness. No, our heroes kill them because they are just that much more vicious and driven.

• In a similar vein, the climax of The Cold Commands sees Risgillen capture Ringil, torture him, and throw him into the Margins against his will, where he’s repeatedly torn limb-from-limb by the undead remains of his lover Seethlaw. Each time Ringil dies from his injuries, he’s reborn to face the same torment anew. But just as his fate seems sealed, Hjel appears, shows Ringil an army of undead soldiers, and transports him to a massive limestone cliff with the ikinri ‘ska carved into it, where he summons the Ravensfriend and reappears in the temple encased in a protective storm of magic powered by the aforementioned undead soldiers. He interrupts Risgillen’s ritual, slaughters her dwenda underlings, destroys much of the temple itself, and drives her to retreat into the Gray Places, bested and injured by a mere human.
