To progress in the plot, Fail Shep does an N7 mission. N7 missions are rather half-assed sidequests with little plot relevance. In this mission, Fail Shep recovers data possessed by a Cerberus operative who was captured and killed by the Eclipse. Shep gives the data back to Cerberus, which he believes to be an organization of great integrity.
TIM contacts Fail Shep and lets him know that the turians fought and disabled a Collector Ship, so Shep can take a team in and find out information on the Collectors.
The ship appears to be abandoned aside from the numerous human corpses. After hacking a terminal, EDI discovers that the Collectors are actually Protheans that have been twisted into a slave race by the Reapers.
EDI hacks another terminal to get the plot progressing intel. Unfortunately, the whole thing was a trap and the Collectors attack. Fail Shep fights his way through a shitload of Mooks and escapes in the nick of time.
Back on the Normandy, Fail Shep contacts TIM, who confesses that he knew that the ship was a trap. TIM has found that the Normandy will need a Reaper IFF to cross the Omega-4 Relay to reach the Collector Base. The good news is that Cerberus has discovered the corpse of a long dead Reaper. The bad news is that the scientists sent to investigate it have vanished.
Fail Shep sets corpse for the Derelict Reaper.
