So, last time, we got through the Mist Cave. Before we enter Mist, we remove Kain's equipment, for a very good reason.

When we enter Mist...

Cecil: The ring is glowing!

A ton of Bombs emerge from Cecil and everything catches fire. Who knew Mist would be so flammable?

Kain: What...?

Cecil: ...This is it? This is why he sent us here!?

Didn't you catch the Obviously Evil vibes from the guy?

Cecil and Kain wonder about their situation a bit, but...

???: Nooo! Mommy!

Cecil: !?

We head a bit north to find a little girl with green hair alongside a collapsed woman.

Girl: My mom's Dragon died... and then my mom... My mom, she...! *sob*

Kain informs us of Summoners, people who can summon Eidolons. Oh crap.

Cecil: Then... You don't mean that by killing that dragon, we have also killed this girl's mother...!

Needless to say, the little girl is quite upset. Kain figures out that the king wanted us to kill all Summoners. If this girl's the daughter of a Summoner, then we have to kill her too.

Cecil: Kain!

Kain: We have to obey the king's orders.

Cecil: But she's just a child!

Kain: You intend to defy the king?

Cecil: I refuse to continue any more slaughter in the king's name!

Aww, that was the perfect opportunity to turn evil!

Kain: ...Heh... I was hoping you might say that. You won't be standing against Baron on your own!

Kain agrees to join Cecil. We'll also have to get some strong allies, and make sure Rosa is safe from the psychopathic kingdom too.

Cecil: Thank you, Kain.

Kain: Save it. This isn't just for your sake.

What a cryptic comment. We decide we have to take the girl with us, it's too dangerous here. She doesn't cooperate.

Girl: I hate you! You killed my mom!

I'm gonna have to side with her on this one. The screen changes to in battle for the next bit.

Girl: Go awaaay!

Summon

She brings out Titan, a very big, muscular guy. We can't even hit him, and he starts an Earthquake. An earthquake powerful enough to split the world map. There's no way we could survive that!

...Or, we could end up east of an up heaved mountain range, with the girl, unconscious, next to us.

Not Quite Dead Count: Cecil:1 Little girl:1

Cecil: She's safe. Thank goodness. Kain!? Kain!?

Oh dear, we lost him. Well, we better find somewhere where this girl will be safe.

If we hadn't unequipped Kain, he would have pulled a So Long, and Thanks for All the Gear on us. This occurs with alarming frequency.

We can't reach Mist, so we head north through the desert to find an oasis. The town by the oasis is called Kaipo. We immediately head for the inn. They even let us stay free of charge!

...Why do I get the feeling something bad's gonna happen?

We head to the beds.

Cecil: Hey. Are you all right?

Girl: ...

Cecil: My name is Cecil. What's yours?

Girl: ...

Cecil: I'm sorry about your mother. I understand if you can't forgive me. Will you at least let me protect you?

Girl: ...

We go to sleep, but soon after, some soldiers come in.

General: Cecil! I've finally found you!

Girl: !

Cecil: Wait!

General: I am here on the king's orders. All summoners from Mist must be annihilated. Hand over the girl, now!

Is Mist even under Baron's control? They're just a harmless little town in the middle of nowhere! And why are they allowed to hunt down people in Kaipo? I know for a fact that Kaipo is not part of Baron, and no country in their right mind would ally with these Crystal stealing, magic user genociding, Jerkasses anymore. Who would let them do this in the middle of the night anyway? The sound would be horrendous!

Cecil: Never!

General: Then you shall die!

We get in a fight with the General and 3 Baron Soldiers. The General controls the other's attack patterns, so we want to kill him. If he's the last unit, he runs away, so that's less EXP if we don't target him too. The Baron Soldiers suck at attacking anyway.

After we kill them all, we return to the girl's side.

Girl: ...Are you okay?

Cecil: Yes. Don't worry about me. I won't let anyone hurt you.

Girl: ...Promise?

Cecil: I promise.

Girl: ...I'm Rydia.

Cecil: Rydia...

And she joins our party. Rydia is a Summoner. She can use both Black and White Magic (In a nutshell, hurting and healing, respectively) and also gets Summon Magic. The only spell she starts with is Chocobo Kick, but she learns new spells fast. Except for Fire. Gee, I wonder why? Equipment is crap, but she is a mage after all. She starts at level 1, so we'll need to work on that a bit.

The next morning we look around town. We buy some equipment for future events, then we head to a house in the north and talk to the locals.

We found a girl from Baron lying unconscious just outside of town. The poor thing's been afflicted with desert fever. She just keeps muttering the name "Cecil" over and over.

Oh no, maybe we should take a look.

Cecil: Rosa!

This is bad.

Rosa: ... Cecil... Cecil, be careful!

A man there tells us we need a Sand Pearl to heal Rosa. But where do we start? I guess we'll start looking next time.

Stats:

        Rydia: Lv 1 HP:30 MP:10 Strength:3 Speed:4 Stamina:2 Intellect:8 Spirit:5 Attack:3 (1 attack) Defence:6 Magic Defence:4

Cecil: Lv 12 HP:244 MP:0 Strength:15 Speed:12 Stamina:12 Intellect:6 Spirit:3 Attack:16 (2 attacks) Defence:18 Magic Defence:1

For those of you who have noticed I indented Rydia's stats a bit, that's because she's in the back row. There are 5 party slots in game, and you can choose to have it set up as 3 front/2 back or 2 front/3 back. The back row takes less physical damage, but lowers accuracy. Oddly enough, Attack is not reduced.

It's been a while since I played the game, but it doesn't look like Kaipo has any sort of military, does it ? I'm sure the Baron soldiers just waltzed in and nobody dared to challenge them but you.

(On my first playthrough, I just couldn't find Kaipo - I crossed the desert by hugging the coastlines. It took me a while - and a walkthrough - to correct my mistake.)

Nah, there's no military in Kaipo, they're also a small town, but it wouldn't be a stretch to say they're a part of Damcyan, considering they're in the same desert.

Of course, Damcyan's military is also very occupied, or will be soon, but we don't know that yet so... yeah.

Baron does not respect other countries sovereignty at all. They probably decided to 'clean up' a few loose ends while going off to war against the nation Kaipo is a part.

Yes, this is a war, and even if it wasn't it will be very soon. I think we can just chalk it up to Kaipo being really poorly defended. Which raises a few more questions, but I should stop reading too much into it.
