XXV: The Looting of Zodanga

It appears Kantos Kan has failed, as John arrives just in time to crash the wedding. Leaping through the window, he struggles with defending himself, and Dejah Thoris, without striking down Sab Than. Than Kosis, the king and no mean fighter, is dispatched, and Dejah and John are surrounded.

  • Here is the scene from the usual frontspiece; "With my back against a golden throne I once again fought for Dejah Thoris."

Tars Tarkas has his Big Damn Heroes moment, as he and fifty of his guards crash through the door. The nobility of Zodanga fight and die to the last man. Best yet, Sab Than got killed by someone else!

A search of the jails turns up Kantos Kan, who was captured before he could reach his target.

  • Man still jumped out of an airplane, with no parachute.
    • Speaking of which, were parachutes even invented in 1912?
      • According to That Other Wiki, Leonardo Da Vinci designed an early parachute, and someone used it soon after. Grant Morton apparently made the first parachute jump from an airplane in 1911.

Tars Tarkas leaves to direct the fighting, leaving John and Dejah to themselves. John credits his many accomplishments to The Power of Love, and asks her hand in marriage.

She accepts.

Sounds exciting! Interesting aside about the parachute, btw - always interesting to note things in early books you might not have thought would have been invented. :p

I can just imagine that ending, John and Dejah finally getting a quiet moment to themselves after all the hubub... and the Power of Love, aww. :3 Okay, it may be cliche but I'll buy that it works :p
