I figured I wasn't going to let the new year pass without at least a brief update. I'll briefly start the second novel of the Barsoom series, The Gods of Mars, though I'm feeling kind of carsick; maybe I'll start listening to the audiobook.
- And somehow, my replacement trainer still hasn't arrived.
The frontspiece is John, hanging from the side of a boat, chain around his leg, with a shadowy figure aiming a gun at him.
We open with Edgar Rice Burroughs musing on the death of his Uncle Jack, some twelve years past. Did he return to Mars? Did he open the oxygen plant in time? Or did he truly die this time?
His musing are interrupted by the delivery of a telegram. From John Carter.
John hasn't aged a day; he still looks like a trim fighting man in his thirties, the same as he did when he was playing with Burroughs great grandfather. John has apparent unlocked the secret of travel between the worlds, though his heart lies with Mars, with Dejah Thoris and his son. He's visiting to see Burroughs one last time, and drop off a gilding envelope full of his notes and memoirs, to be published as Burroughs sees fit; he mentions You Are Not Ready.
He goes back to his tomb, and that's the last Burroughs sees of him.
Well, this does confirm John's immortality, and the next story is after the Cliffhanger.

- An immortal from Highlander? It explain the sword skills, and going to Mars is like Highlander II, I think...
