* BaseBreakingCharacter: Sans, and the game's VideoGame/Undertale representation in general. While many people love how Sans and his game are represented in EX and praise his moveset as well as the variety in Undertale stages and music, others (even some of the modders behind the game) dislike the representation due to the HypeBacklash associated with Undertale, and feel that it would attract the character's and game's extremely vocal fanbases to EX. Given that a VideoGame/Deltarune stage is also present, the possibility of adding a fighter from that game such as Kris, Susie or Spamton is contentious for the same reasons.
* EvenBetterSequel: Can be considered one to VideoGame/ProjectM and its popular derivative mods Project+ and Super Smash Bros. Legacy XP, for keeping what made those games great and adding a massive, crowdsourced variety of fighters, stages, music tracks and even Event Matches.
* SugarWiki/GeniusProgramming: Project M was already a labor of love and a miracle of programming, but you have to hand it to the collaborators for PMEX REMIX to not only expand the roster to one roughly 3 times the size of the Brawl roster, but to develop fully fleshed-out movesets for each character, and to make the characters with movesets ported over from Ultimate feel almost exactly like their canon counterparts. Special mention goes to Hero's entire Command Menu gimmick, which was successfully programmed into the Brawl engine.
* GrowingTheBeard: For a long time, PMEX REMIX was ambitious and impressive, but felt dodgy in some places, most notably with characters such as Joker and Sephiroth that felt rather incomplete compared to their Ultimate counterparts. The 0.95 update, released in 2022, updated many existing fighters to feel more like their official incarnations and added even more fan-favorites such as Banjo & Kazooie, Pyra, Mythra and Sora, making the game feel even closer to the more-ultimate-than-Ultimate game that it was envisioned as.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Sephiroth was one of the most beloved "newcomers" in this game, often to JustHereForGodzilla levels - with EX gaining popularity only a few weeks before he was officially announced for VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosUltimate.
** Dive into the Heart has been a stage in EX for a long time, even before any Kingdom Hearts fighters made it in. Not only was Sora officially announced for VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosUltimate in late 2021 complete with a stage that transforms into Dive into the Heart, but mere months later he was added to EX, bringing the representation full circle.
* JustHereForGodzilla: trope; the massive character and stage roster are the primary draws of the mod, though some people are attracted to REMIX for specific characters such as Sans or their favorite Ultimate fighters not already represented in Project M and Project+.
* LowTierLetdown:
** While the game is reasonably well-balanced and tier lists vary wildly, the one constant is that Metal Face is considered the worst character in the game. On paper, his long range via his attacks and high weight would be mitigating factors for his glaring weaknesses, but they aren't enough to make up for his negative attributes, with his size, weight and fall speed making him especially susceptible to even the most basic combos.
** Due to technical limitations regarding custom fighters, Pyra and Mythra have to be two separate characters. However, while solo-maining Sheik is a considered viable enough for her and Zelda to officially be two separate fighters in Smash 4 onwards, this is not the case for solo-maining Mythra in Ultimate, and splitting her apart from Pyra greatly impacts her ability to secure [=KOs=].
* UnexpectedCharacter: Just like in Smash proper, the massive roster is bound to have some choices from out of left field.
** Sans - one of the last characters one would expect to be added to a "serious" Project M expansion - is a fully playable fighter, with original moves and animations. On top of this, while he comes with two Undertale stages, nobody expected him to come with a VideoGame/Deltarune stage (specifically, Jevil's battle arena) on top of that, complete with its own music tracks from Chapters 1 and 2.
** The Franchise/FateSeries has a playable fighter - but it's Elizabeth, not Saber.
** The vast majority of the [=3DS/Wii U=] and Ultimate veterans are this, because of how faithfully their movesets and unique mechanics are reproduced - one would expect that such a thing would be really difficult to program into the Brawl engine and that any newer fighters added to Brawl would feel like a shadow of their official selves, but with the game being out for 12+ years, the collaborative devs managed to pull it off.
** VideoGame/DrMario has been a Smash staple for years, ever since his return after Brawl. Dr. Luigi, on the other hand, is a very obscure version of Luigi (only appearing in his self-titled game, Miracle Cure and Dr. Mario World) but fits Smash like a glove given how he combines the concepts of two already-playable fighters.
** Nobody expected a Franchise/DragonBall stage of all things to be added to the game, especially since it originates as a manga and not a video game. However, despite his ironic and unironic popularity as a Smash character request, Goku is nowhere to be seen because according to WordOfGod, no Goku mod exists that would be deemed high-quality enough for REMIX.
** Aside from the obvious Shulk, Pyra and Mythra, who else from VideoGame/XenobladeChronicles would be added? Nia? Jin? Fiora? Dunban? Elma? Noah? Mio? KOS-MOS? Nope, it's Metal Face.
** Two characters from the fighting game genre has caught people off guard: the first one being Sub-Zero, who hails from gaming's most gory fighting game series. The other fighting game representative is perhaps more left-field and that is Nu-13. Weirdly enough is that she got in over the series' protagonist, Ragna.
