!! The Slayer of Demons
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cgcc5et.jpg]]

One of the brave warriors who travels to Boletaria in order to free it from [[spoiler:or join forces with]] the Old One.
----
* AntiHero: Barring being intentionally heroic or intentionally evil, this is your most likely what you will end up being. Especially since the game encourages pragmatism morally as well as practically, so morally dubious actions are likely. What type of AntiHero depends on how you play.
* AdaptationalJerkass: Very slightly. [[spoiler:Should you kill the Maiden as she's lulling the Old One to sleep in the 2020 remake, the cutscene that follows shows them stomping her head into the water, as opposed to the original where they simply step on her corpse (likely meant to be a reference to the similar bad ending of ''VideoGame/DarkSoulsIII''). Really goes to show just how evil you've become in this ending.]]
* CompleteImmortality: Has a Nexial Binding attached to them after they die in the tutorial, binding them to the Nexus. [[spoiler:They become a Monumental should the Maiden be allowed to lull the Old One back to sleep.]]
* CosmicKeystone: [[spoiler:One of the endings for the player, taking the place of The Monumental.]]
* {{Determinator}}: Nothing will stop the Slayer of Demons from uncovering the mystery in Boletaria.
* HeroicMime: Aside from crying in pain, the player character doesn't really say anything. [[TheSilentBob Although talking to [=NPCs=] seems to imply him/her talking]].
* HeWhoFightsMonsters: In order to become more powerful and better able to fight the demons, the protagonist has to acquire and manipulate souls, an act that effectively makes him/her more demonic in nature. [[spoiler:And one of the endings has the protagonist take Allant's place as the Old One's emissary.]]
* HyperspaceArsenal: To a point. There is a max weight limit for your inventory.
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: All the classes start out with some kind of shield; they're pretty much essential to survival.
* OneManArmy: Though this can be subverted with summoning [[CoopMultiplayer Blue Phantoms]], the game treats the Slayer of Demons as a solo entity that manages to nigh singlehandedly fight back the invasion of Boletaria be it man or demon, albeit likely with a maddening number of deaths under their belt.
* ProtagonistWithoutAPast: Aside from being stuck in the Nexus, nothing about the protagonist's history is explained. Although the class that they start as gives them a very simplistic origin, based on their equipment loadout.

-> ''"Soul of the lost, withdrawn from its vessel. Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended. Soul of the lost, withdrawn from its vessel. Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended, so the world might be mended."''

The Maiden in Black is said to have once been one of the most powerful Demons in existence. Her ability to harness and manipulate the souls of the player-character certainly seems interesting. She maintains a direct communion with the Old One, and is even able to lull it back to sleep should the character accept her offer.
----
* AmbiguouslyEvil: Being a demon, it is implied that if it weren't for the ankle bracelet literally chaining her into the service of the Monumentals she would be out there, terrorizing the world of man and collecting souls like the rest of them. Of course, this is coming from [[OmniscientMoralityLicense the Monumental]], so best take that with a grain of salt.
* AndIMustScream: She is nigh immortal and has spent ''millenia'' bound to the Nexus, unable to leave.
* BlindSeer: Certainly inspired by the same archetype that would influence her spiritual successors, the Fire Keepers. A MysteriousWaif who knows a lot more about the world than one might assume, and who guides the hero on their journey. And her eyes are, of course, covered by wax.
* DarkIsNotEvil: She has a pretty sinister moniker and an overall creepy vibe, and happens to have been one of the most powerful demons around. However, she is the only one who can lull the Old One back to sleep, and wants nothing more than to do so.
* CoveredInGunge: In the remake her feet appear covered in grime, as if she had walked through a mud puddle.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Blackhaired, and her skin is ghostly white to highlight her inhumanity and otherworldly presence.
* ExtremeDoormat:
** She never fights back, and if you kill her, her reaction after [[ContractualImmortality getting better]] will be to tearfully apologize to you for not staying dead.
** There may be a reason for this. [[spoiler:If you agree to the idea that the Old One is nothing more than a mere child, and that the Maiden in Black is one of the most powerful demons, then it's possible that she's something of a mother to the Old One. If so, then it means she not only might be resisting killing him, but she feels responsible for the whole mess in the first place, feeling you would be very right to get mad at her.]]
* EyeScream: Her eyes are caked over in wax.
* FanservicePack: Her breasts are larger in the remake.
* GameplayAllyImmortality: Killing her will only cause the Nexial Binding around her right ankle to resurrect her after a few seconds, and she doesn't become hostile toward you, unlike the other [=NPCs=] you can attack.
* HumanoidAbomination: Very human in appearance save for her lack of eyes, but is also the oldest demon in existence.
* MysteriousWaif: She's a petite woman that can increase the Demon Slayer's powers by manipulating souls and is tied to The Old One.
* PetTheDog: Not that she's not already kind, but Stockpile Thomas mentions that she took care of him when he first arrived in the Nexus. He seems to be under the impression that she's mortal, and the same age as his daughter.
* Really700YearsOld: She is the oldest Demon in existence, even older than the Old One.
* SorryIFellOnYourFist: If you kill her, the Nexial Binding will revive her instantly, and she will tearfully apologize for not dying.
* TheLancer: She serves the player as this, being their foremost faithful supporter.
* TroubledButCute: Besides her EyeScream, she acts as very friendly and soothing young woman...which hides all the guilt she feels for her responsibility for the current events of the game.
* WhatTheHellIsThatAccent: Very soothing, to be sure, but pretty much impossible to place...
* YeOldeButcheredeEnglishe: The Maiden in Black's accent and manner of speaking evokes Shakespearean dialect.

-> ''"We have long await'd you, slayer of Demons. I am one of the Monumentals. We preserve the fabric of reality. There is something thou need'st to know. Once, we too, a scourge of Demons faced."''

The Monumental is the last surviving harbinger of its kind. They are a vessel-race endowed only with prophetic knowledge and lacking all consequence of emotion or personal thought. It seeks to aid the adventurer into lulling the Old One back to sleep.
----
* AmbiguousGender: In both looks and voice.
* BigGood: Keeps the universe in balance and is the one who leads the Player Character to the Nexus.
* ButThouMust: When the Monumental tells you its plan to defeat the Old One, you get to decline to helping it. It then points out that your only other option is staying in the Nexus for all eternity, slowly withering away.
* CosmicKeystone: The Monumental is responsible for maintaining the existence of the universe.
* GameplayAllyImmortality: The Monumental is the only NPC that reacts to being attacked without taking damage, and it chides you for wasting your energy. [[spoiler:If you choose to lull the Old One back to sleep, it dies off-screen and you become a Monumental in its place.]]
* IronicName: The child-like being is known as the Monumental.
* NotSoStoic: Despite Monumentals being stated to lack emotion, it's not above laughing at you should you refuse to help mend the world.
* OmniscientMoralityLicense: The Monumentals are godlike beings whose job is to protect the Realm of Mortals from any otherworldly monstrosities that threaten it (i.e. the Old One and [[OurDemonsAreDifferent its kin]]) and uphold reality. What is the Monumental's solution to the current scourge of demons? Open the way for any hapless adventurer out of their depth (like a certain Player Character) and trap their souls to the Nexus for all of eternity, or at least until the scourge has ended, giving them no real choice to turn back. Not only that, but they have permanently enslaved the Maiden in Black to uphold the Nexus, the only hint that [[AmbiguouslyEvil she has it coming]] is from the Monumental itself, so...
* TheStoic: The Monumentals are described as lacking emotion.
* Really700YearsOld: The Monumental is extremely old, having spent centuries maintaining its duty.
* WrittenByTheWinners: Of a kind. While retelling the history of the world, it recounts how, before the Old One, the world was ruled justly and wisely by its kin. We don't know enough about the world before the Old One to know if this is true, but it certainly has reasons to be biased.
