You don't need to beat it to continue the story, but to get the Maduin Memento you have to beat it in 10 turns or less, without losing a single unit. You and your enemy both have three units, with 1, 2 and 3 hp each, meaning you only have 4 spare turns to actually look for the enemy, as you need the other six to actually take down all their hp.
