Although parachutes weren't in widespread use during the war - the higher ups were afraid the safety net would encourage pilots to abandon their planes rather than face difficulties - the German pilots were indeed given them in the last few months of the war. This was because they realised they could no longer afford to train new ones to replace those that died.
