* TheyChangedItSoItSucks: There have been some complaints about the skill trees for the Fatemaker that contrasts heavily from the previous Borderlands entries, mainly that the skill trees are singular their first class and subsequently binary in terms of choices instead of having the freedom of three trees per class, and that said skill trees don't do much to augment action skills if anything at all. Also they're currently stuck at level 40. It doesn't help that the Chaos levels limit has been increased post-launch, but player levels themselves still remain at level 40.

* SurprisinglyImprovedSequel: In terms of the main story department, ''Wonderlands'' isn't considered to be on the levels of ''Borderlands 2'' or ''The Pre-Sequel.'' But It is considered to be an improvement over it's [[VideoGame/Borderlands3 predecessor]] due to it's more consistent plot, improved quality of comedy, fairer treatment of returning characters (such as Tina herself and Brick.) and a better received villain in the form of The Dragon Lord.

* MagnificentBastard:
** [[BigBad The Dragon Lord]] is the menacing yet [[AffablyEvil oddly casual]] overlord terrorizing the Wonderlands. [[spoiler: Originally Tina's own player character, the Dragon Lord has built up extreme resentment towards her for using him as the main villain for her campaigns, and [[RageAgainstTheAuthor resolves to take fate into his own hands]]]]. In a fine moment that not even Tina herself saw coming, the Dragon Lord waits for the Fatemaker to reclaim the Sword of Souls, only to steal it, chop off the head of his nemesis [[CoolHorse Queen Butt Stallion]], and retreat to his lair, intending to use the sword to free himself from Tina's control, while doing what he can to halt the Fatemaker as they advance towards his lair. The Dragon Lord is ultimately defeated in the battle for the Wonderlands, [[spoiler: [[DefeatEqualsFriendship turning over a new leaf]] when the Fatemaker spares him and guiding them through a series of challenges to help them grow stronger]].
** [[CardCarryingVillain Zygaxis]] is a Daemon that, after the Fatemaker Kills his host in self defense, hires them to recover an incantation containing his true name so that he can find a new host. Locating a coven containing said name, he has the Fatemaker commit various acts of evil so that he can [[BodySurf posses them]] and infiltrate the coven, reluctantly allowing them to commit [[PokeThePoodle more harmless crimes]] as they're just evil enough. Successfully infiltrating the coven, he has the Fatemaker kill the members and read his name, and then chooses a prisoner to posses as his new host, settling on a willing host. He then rewards the Fatemaker and leaves, remaining [[AffablyEvil legitimately friendly towards them]] all throughout.

* AuthorsSavingThrow: ''Wonderlands'' attempts to fix some criticisms of ''3'', as well as various post-launch annoyances.
** Cosmetics always have a high sell price (in sharp contrast to ''3'', where they only sold for $1), so duplicates are worth grabbing. However, them always being purple does annoy some people, mainly early game players who might think a strong purple gear piece dropped. A hotfix turned their color to yellow, but with numerous differences to differentiate them from legendaries. There's no noise on spawn, no map icon, and the beam isn't as big as a legendary.
** Enchantments (the counterpart to anointments) provide less potent damage boosts, so certain ones are less likely to make or break a build. Updates have also let you add enchantments to every gun, spell, and shield, even quest rewards.
** Enchantment rerolling is generally cheaper, starting at only a few moonstones (depending on the rarity tier) and doubling in price for every subsequent reroll, with a max reroll price of 4,000. You can also choose to reject the new enchantment and keep the old one.
** The ability to swap out your secondary class means you can try every one of them without having to start a new character, though you will need to if you want to swap out your primary class.
** The issue of drop rates was addressed by making increased rates optional. If you want lower rates, avoid most dice and the Myth Rank loot boost stat. If you're a dedicated player who wants the best rates, you'd be hunting down those dice, anyway.
** The speed penalty from being hit with cryo damage is much lower.
** Adding actual melee weapons into the games since Bunkers and Badasses is a sword-and-sorcery [=RPG=] game in-universe after all. The Vault Hunters in the main series had very limited melee options. Here in Wonderlands you get to use swords, maces, axes and even unconventional weapons like a lute, a magic wand, or a pirate's peg leg! Even if melee combat isn't your thing, melee weapons have other non-melee-centric bonuses that make whacking enemies worth a try.
** While ''3'' did have the right idea of making [=SDUs=] purchasable with money as opposed to Eridium, it wasn't too hard to max out all categories in one playthrough thus rendering [[MoneyForNothing money worthless once again]]. Not only have the prices for [=SDUs=] been increased exponentially, but at the end of each chaos chamber run is a set of vending machines that sell Legendary-grade gear as the item of the day for an even heftier price, giving reason to harvest as much gold as possible throughout the entire game.
** The bunny statues at the end of chaos chamber runs will each spawn different specific types of gear, so if you're looking for a certain gear piece, you can feed that particular one all your crystals for better chances at getting it.
** After many requests to make Lucky Dice account-wide instead of being saved on a per-character basis, Patch 1.0.2.0a did exactly that, meaning players now need to find each Lucky Dice only once, ''period'', in order to gain the increased loot luck.
** Inspecting an elemental weapon will show you exactly how much of a damage bonus or penalty it will get against the various types of health.
** The May 2022 update added vending machines to the end room of the chaos chamber runs, so you can feel free to loot to your heart's content during the run without worrying about backpack space.
** The September 2022 patch lets you spend 2,000 crystals at a time on bunny statues, and this will make them spit out 18 items instead of the expected 16. Spending 2,000 crystals also makes them spit out much better qualities.

This isn't YMMV. Moving.

* LastLousyPoint: Strangely, Lucky Dice don't get marked on the map once found or activated, despite being the most helpful and important collectible. You can't exactly just leave them be for post-game cleanup since finding them gives you a much-needed permanent drop rate boost. If you find yourself with the whole map explored and only one or two missing, then good luck finding them without a guide. And even with a guide, that's upwards of 20 locations to double-check. Thankfully, after patch 1.0.2.0a, this issue has gotten a helpful change, as Lucky Dice only need to be found once in any save file. You still need to painstakingly seek out each one, but just once.

* ItsShortSoItSucks:
** The main game has a decent amount of content, though the level cap is only 40 compared to previous games' 50. When the DLC began to come out, fans were almost universally outraged that instead of being proper expansion packs with their own unique casts and storylines... every DLC pack just amounts to short dungeon runs that only take 10-20 minutes, essentially being reskinned Chaos Chamber runs. Tina, Valentine, and Frette aren't even involved, making the potential story hooks fall under TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot as well. Some fans have even accused Gearbox of selling DummiedOut content, as the first pack came out only a few weeks after launch and was being developed alongside the base game itself. What makes it even worse is that each "expansion" is priced at 10 dollars each, amounting to 40 dollars total, yet the content inside is barely enough to make up for it. This compares unfavorably to previous games with their full-fledged campaigns for reasonable prices.
** Chaos Chambers in general is regarded as this. It boils down to randomly selected combat encounter rooms you've already seen before with random modifiers, and bosses you've already fought at the end. Aside from that, there's only one raid boss with a convoluted method of unlocking it, instead of being available right away after completing the main game. It's a similar situation to ''VideoGame/BorderlandsThePreSequel'' with a similarly lackluster endgame.

** The Son of a Witch boss in Chaos Chambers is the boss that will likely block the Fatemaker's progress through the Chaos Trials, as he's required to progress past Chaos 6 and Chaos 13. The main issue is that he can summon a Spectral Aegis which replenishes his Ward and resummon it if destroyed, which due to the HP boost from the Chaos levels can cascade to a cycle where he can replenish more of his Ward than you can both deal damage to it and take down the Spectral Aegis timely. The boss is a check on whether your character build is fully optimized. And woe to you if you took the "nasty spill" modifier, since the skeletons he summons will walk right into the spilled ice puddles, destroying themselves and ensuring you have no way to get a Death Save if you didn't pick a companion class.
** Dry'l, especially in the Chaos Chambers, is a massive DamageSpongeBoss with ''multiple phases''. Even worse, like Son of the Witch, in his second phase he can replenish his Ward. Fortunately, his Crit spot is very large and easy to hit.

* SugarWiki/AwesomeMoments: The Swordplosion from ''2'' is back! While its bullets no longer split into three swords upon impact, its sticky alt-fire mode more than makes up for it by firing blades that stick into foes and cause them to receive increased damage per stuck sword. When reloading during Alt-fire, a spectral sword erupts under struck foes, launching them while detonating the stuck swords for massive damage. Here's hoping that this weapon returns for a future game.

** When it is revealed that the Sword of Souls can absorb and imprison evil souls, Frette questions why it hasn’t been used on the recurring threat of the Dragon Lord. Tina hastily claims that the Dragon Lord, the BigBad ancient evil, hasn’t actually done anything to deserve that. [[spoiler:In truth, it is because he used to be her player character until her actions caused Roland to declare an alignment change. It seems that Tina still has some attachment to the old boy.]]
** Over the course of dealing with Bones Three-wood and Chartreuse [=LeChance=], it becomes clear that they aren't just former crewmates, but lovers in turmoil. Over the course of the fight, you find out why Bones is waging such a grand assault on [=LeChance=]'s ship; Bones is the reason they were cursed with undeath, and wanted to personally apologize and hope to make things right between them... and [=LeChance=] accepts gladly. One gets the feeling they would seal it with a kiss if they had lips.

* NightmareFuel:
** The main conflict of the game: the Dragon Lord, a recurring BigBad in all of Tina’s campaigns has become sentient and is taking control of his story. Just imagine it: ''The villain of a work of fiction you created [[TheFourthWallWillNotProtectYou gained sentience and is rebelling against you]], ''VideoGame/ComixZone''-style.''
** The Dragon Lord's existence, from his perspective. At one point, he describes having the run of the Wonderlands for a time before Tina started controlling him and talking through him for a campaign. And he was ''aware'' of it.
** The skeletons and zombies of the Dragon Lord’s army are apparently comprised of the ''dead'' of the Wonderlands with no memories from when they were alive. There’s no specific group of dead, just any dead. Anyone can be attacked by their deceased loved ones at any moment. And from the dialog from when you fight these enemies, ANYONE can be added to the army… victims of raids… heroes… Fatemakers…
** The Tooth Fairy: a creepy goblin with a disturbing interest in having the player collect teeth. It’s mainly PlayedForLaughs… [[spoiler:until you learn that the teeth are used to create mimics that EAT unsuspecting adventurers]].
** The side quest concerning the Murphs happens to be a direct homage to the Smurfs storyline “The Black Smurfs”, only much DarkerAndEdgier. The infected act much more like the [[OurZombiesAreDifferent zombies]] from ''Film/TwentyEightDaysLater'', being crazed assailants that attack on sight. And if College Murph is correct, there is no cure and the only way to help the infected is to MercyKill them.

* TearJerker:
** Back in ''[[TearJerker/Borderlands2 Assault on Dragon Keep]]'', Tina spent almost the whole campaign waiting for Roland to arrive, in denial over his death. [[spoiler:A new wrinkle to this is added here when Roland is revealed to have been the one who introduced Tina to B&B in the first place. He even promised to play with Tina again when he wasn’t busy with the Crimson Raiders… a promise he never kept due to being murdered. [[SarcasmMode Thanks a lot, Handsome Jack.]]]]
** Old Murph’s HeroicSacrifice in the Murph side quest, giving into the infection in order to prevent Murphetta from succumbing to such a fate.
** “In the Belly is a Beast”. Let’s just say it takes ''Literature/{{Pinocchio}}'' to some truly tragic places…

* CatharsisFactor: The "Nasty Spill" chaos chamber modifier makes enemies spawn elemental puddles when different types of health bars are depleted. These puddles can damage other enemies. This can result in a glorious chain reaction where you kill an enemy, another one walks into the puddle and dies, releasing another puddle, and so on until the whole chamber is cleared with minimal ammo spent. It's especially enjoyable in obelisk rooms, where they'll all spawn in the same small area, so you can just sit back and enjoy the carnage. * ScrappyMechanic: Having a piece of armor that augments a skill requires one to invest enough points in a skill tree to unlock the row that skill is on (although no points need to be invested in the skill itself, which is significant for skills without room for upgrades, eliminating any redundancy). Because the game has an AbsurdlyLowLevelCap compared to previous entries, skill points are far less plentiful and having to reap the benefits of gear that augment skills further in a given tree usually means investing heavily in that tree, forcing some tough investment decisions or having to change gameplay styles to benefit.
