** [[BigBad BurgerBeard]] is either an [[EvilIsHammy entertaining]] new spin on the series, or a one note villain. Creator/AntonioBanderas' portrayal is also sometimes seen either [[WTHCastingAgency as a miscast]] or an unexpectedly good casting choice.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Gary the Snail. The only one of the seven main character who never joins [=SpongeBob=]'s superhero team and consequently, has next to nothing to do in the overall story.

* AmericansHateTingle: The movie itself got mixed-to-negative reviews in France, something that is unusual given that Spongebob, as a whole, is beloved there: this is caused by disappointment about its premise [[spoiler: (the CGI scenes are only in the end) ]], misleading trailers and [[ValuesDissonance jokes that are unfunny for a French standards.]] The controversy caused by the fact the gulls got dubbed by Cyprien Iov, a youtuber who is popular in France, but among teenagers, doesn't help at all.

* WhatDoYouMeanItWasntMadeOnDrugs: The time travel scenes are straight out of a hallucinogenic acid trip.

* MisaimedMarketing: The CGI superhero scenes [[NeverTrustATrailer were heavily advertised in trailers and marketing]], despite only taking up the last 30 minutes of the film where most of the film is traditionally animated. This may be have been due to concerns that traditionally animated features wouldn't bring in an audience. Averted in the Japanese trailers, where the traditionally drawn scenes are more prominently advertised.

* AuthorsSavingThrow:
** The movie aimed to alleviate many, many grievances that resulted from the {{Flanderization}} the cast suffered after season 5. [=SpongeBob=] himself was much less obnoxious and more intelligent, Patrick was still [[TheDitz a dumbass]], but he wasn't quite as bad as in the later seasons (and significantly less malicious), Mr. Krabs was more of the gruff and greedy but reasonable boss he used to be instead of the psychotic money-grabbing lunatic he became, Plankton was back to being a legitimate threat after years of VillainDecay, and Squidward finally got [[ThrowTheDogABone thrown a bone]] that wasn't [[YankTheDogsChain cruelly ripped from him at the last moment]]. Given that the story was penned by Stephen Hillenberg himself, the entire movie can be seen as a "Sorry for what the current staff turned my show into after I left."
** One issue some had with the first film was how the main characters (aside from [=SpongeBob=], Patrick, and Plankton) were not given enough screentime. This film rectifies the issue by having Squidward, Sandy, and Mr. Krabs have more active participation in the plot compared to the first film.

* CharacterRerailment: With Stephen Hillenburg back at the helm, the characters in the franchise are closer in characterization to the first three seasons than when he stepped down.

* ContestedSequel: Depending on who you ask, it's either better than the first, worse than the first, or good, but not as good as the first. Most agree it's an improvement over [[AudienceAlienatingEra seasons 6 through 8]], though.

* MisaimedMarketing: [[NeverTrustATrailer The CGI superhero scenes are heavily advertised, while in fact they take no more than 20 minutes of screen time.]] The CGI scenes in general are getting the most attention in terms of marketing, when most of the film is traditionally animated. This may be due to concerns that traditionally animated features won't bring audiences in anymore, which is admittedly a legitimate concern. Averted in the Japanese trailer, where the traditionally drawn scenes are more advertised.

** While not as fluid as the last movie was (although it still is in its own right), the traditional animation in this film is still incredibly stunning to look at, using many stylized facial expressions and amazing shading.
** The CG is ''very'' well-done in keeping the same kind of stylized cartoony look of the show.

* TastesLikeDiabetes: When Plankton crawls into [=SpongeBob=]'s brain to unlock the secret formula. It's a [[SugarBowl terribly happy and colorful place]], it outright made Plankton ''puke rainbows''.

* UncannyValley:
** Not in the film itself, but the music video for [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acUqPKHG4JQ Squeeze Me]] features Sponge-ified versions of N.E.R.D. mixing cutout photos and 2D animation. The result is... unsettling.
** Although the very detailed images of [=SpongeBob=] and Plankton in the time travel parts have a bit of an uncanny vibe to them, in the midst of an already weird sequence.
** Sandy's superhero form is that of a realistic squirrel. Not so bad on the show (where it was either a still image or a puppet), but here.... Although given [=SpongeBob=] and co.'s reactions, this was likely intentional.

** The seagulls are either [[RidiculouslyCuteCritter adorable]] or the [[TheScrappy worst characters in the film]], ''especially'' [[TheBabyOfTheBunch Kyle]]. Their role as the AudienceSurrogate is also debated.

* ContestedSequel: Depending on who you ask, it's either [[EvenBetterSequel better than the first]], [[{{Sequelitis}} worse than the first]], or good, but not as good as the first. Most agree it's an improvement over [[DorkAge seasons 6 through 8]], though.

** The ShoutOut to ''Film/MadMax'' with the denizens of Bikini Bottom transformed into Apunkalypse after the disappearance of the Krabby Patty recipe became more hilarious three months later with the release of ''Film/MadMaxFuryRoad''.
** Remember ''Krab Borg'', the episode where [=SpongeBob=] thinks Mr. Krabs is a robot? Guess what power Eugene gets in the climax.

* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** Bubbles, since he's a StopMotion animated Dolphin who displays a rather... [[MoodSwinger vibrant personality]].
** Among the superhero personas in the climax, Sour Note is definitely the most popular, for his well-thought out design, [[BrownNote cool]] [[GlassShatteringSound powers]] and generally being a ThrowTheDogABone moment for [[ButtMonkey Squidward]].

Sympathetic moments only make it worse that Plankton is destined to be the BigBad of the chronological GrandFinale.
