** Ironically, this hasn't stopped Creator/YenPress from localizing the light novels themselves, with the [[http://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/tsutomu-sato/the-irregular-at-magic-high-school-vol-1/9780316348805/?yen first volume]] already published in North America on April 2016. However time will tell if the novels will actually sell well outside of Japan.

It is actually a subversion in that the \"underdog\" here is actually VASTLY stronger than...well, pretty much almost every named character in the anime. And it\'s not a good thing.

* ClicheStorm: The first major arc is basically one long UnderdogsNeverLose story that is meant to show that the so called weaker students are stronger then thought. It's about as straightforward as the trope can be.

** He isn't the only one. Many of the First High School students (such as Erika and Leo), despite being magicians-in-training, seem a bit too powerful in relation to the enemies they face, especially if said enemies are adults. This is balanced out by other students who accomplish nothing (specifically Mizuki, Honoka, and everyone in the student council save Mayumi).

* TheGreatPoliticsMessUp: The geopolitical world of Mahouka following WorldWarIII. While most of it can be justified by being an AlternateHistory once magic is discovered in 1999 and taking place in the future, as explained in the Headscratchers section, some things just plain don't make sense, like the SovietUnion [[MakeTheBearAngryAgain rising again]], [[TheIndoPakistanConflict India absorbing Pakistan]], Australia secluding itself in isolation, Japan managing to stay independant in all this turmoil, etc. Double point for many of the nations being typical future history stereotypes (SpaceFillingEmpire, BalkanizeMe, ExpandedStatesOfAmerica, MiddleEasternCoalition) rather than realistic geopolitical evolution.

However, Miyuki, special abilities aside, is an otherwise normal high school aged girl, he would need to be at the school as well to protect her.

** It even caught on to the international community to the point that ''anything mundane'' [[MundaneMadeAwesome needs a]] TechnoBabble explanation.
** Also, "Yamato Spirit!", used as a derogatory mark, directed at Japan for being basically a MarySue nation that cannot lose or do wrong, against all logic and common sense.
* {{Moe}}: Isn't Miyuki just the sweetest little sister ever?
* {{Narm}}: The way Tatsuya and Miyuki turn towards each other in the opening just looks silly. They look like hand puppets.
* SnarkBait: The entirety of this YMMV page is the testament to this status.
* SoBadItsGood: '''''The''''' reason why this series is so popular in Chinese ACG community. Most people got into the first episode by the controversy and hype this series generated. They stayed for the second episode due to the sporking comments.
* StoicWoobie: Tatsuya, when you learn his past, [[spoiler: for being considered a fake magician that was experimented on by his own mother, robbing him of strong emotions, and then made to be a ChildSoldier.]]
* UnfortunateImplications: As highlighted by an [[http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=4227069#4227069 ANN poster]], the series is relatively controversial because China and America are portrayed in a very negative light ([[UsefulNotes/WorldWarII considering the fact that Japan has a very bad history with their Asian neighbors]]). It's also very racist as well as the series portrays immigrants (particularly the Chinese) in a very negative light. Ironically, this series is [[BileFascination quite popular in China]] despite the anime not being streamed there.
