* {{Asspull}}: During his fight with Masaki, Tatsuya gets nearly hit by his attack and goes down. [[spoiler: Then he suddenly whips out a healing ability and gets out literally unscathed]]. There is literally no evidence prior of him being able to do that and it comes completely out of left field.

* ClicheStorm: The first major arc is basically one long UnderdogsNeverLose story that is meant to show that the so called weaker students are stronger then thought. It's about as straightforward as the trope can be.

* TheGreatPoliticsMessUp: The geopolitical world of Mahouka following WorldWarIII. While most of it can be justified by being an AlternateHistory once magic is discovered in 1999 and taking place in the future, as explained in the Headscratchers section, some things just plain don't make sense, like the SovietUnion [[MakeTheBearAngryAgain rising again]], [[TheIndoPakistanConflict India absorbing Pakistan]], Australia secluding itself in isolation, Japan managing to stay independant in all this turmoil, etc. Double point for many of the nations being typical future history stereotypes (SpaceFillingEmpire, BalkanizeMe, ExpandedStatesOfAmerica, MiddleEasternCoalition) rather than realistic geopolitical evolution.

** Out of all of Tatsuya's potential legal [[LoveInterest love interests]], [[NiceGirl Honoka]] gets arguably the most amount of hate due to basically being the same character as [[ShrinkingViolet Mizuki]] (who is not well liked either), except with even less screen time, impact on the plot, and characterization beyond liking Tatsuya.
** Pretty much all female characters in this series have a {{Hatedom}}; [[PluckyGirl Erika]] and [[StudentCouncilPresident Mayumi]] are the only ones that don't get bashed.

* BaseBreaker: While she does have her perks, Miyuki Shiba is this due to a portion of the readers/viewers feeling uneasy regarding [[IncestSubtext how]] [[ClingyJealousGirl she]] [[StepfordSmiler acts]] towards her older brother despite Tatsuya not feeling the same way. * BrokenBase: It's basically a LoveItOrHateIt kind of story amongst the fanbase.

** [[GenkiGirl Mayumi]] seems to be the most liked Mahouka female character in Mahouka Western Fanbase.

** [[Ojou Mayumi]] seems to be the most liked Mahouka female character in Mahouka Western Fanbase.

** [[PluckyGirl Erika]] seems to be well-liked even by people who can't stand the series.
