* OlderThanTheyThink: Most people starting Sword Art Online will think the series was inspired by the .hack series when in reality both series started around the same time in 2002. Sword Art Online was originally meant as an entry for the Dengeki Novel Prize contest but Reki Kawahara didn't submit it because it exceeded the page limit so he published it as a webnovel under the pseudonym Fumio Kunori. It was only after the popularity of his second novel series Accel World that his publishers convinced him to release Sword Art Online as an light novel in 2009.

* FridgeHorror: Although RuleOfCool is in play here, you have to wonder how the body of the players remain alive and functioning in the real world if their helmets can't be removed from the head without risking death and they're unable to have any contact with the outside world. While some people could probably get some IV's attached to them, such as Kirito since he lives with his mother/sister, there are other players living alone (such as Klein who mentions it in the first episode), who have no way of eating, drinking, or getting rid of bodily waste on their own. So unless time goes incredibly fast in the game world, such as "one year in the game equals one hour in the real world", many players should just be dropping dead simply because their body stopped functioning due to lack of food/water.
** Aside from that, it's amazing that any government would allow the GM to do something like this. If they die in RL, he's already a SerialKiller and you'd think cops would be barging in on his location.
