* HoYay: Richard's complete and utter admiration of Mueller borderlines this.

* LesYay: Cathari is heavily implied to have been in a relationship with Lucretia at one point, and Lelei is implied to currently be in a relationship with her.

Added DiffLines:

** [[spoiler:Sialeeds' betrayal]] took many players by surprise. This event upsets a lot of characters, and especially your protagonist: while Luserina tries to comfort him, the protagonist just turns around and walks off. You aren't even given the opportunity to select a dialogue option like usual. [[spoiler:The betrayal]] cut so deep that the player doesn't have their word on the matter: the silent protagonist is just too distraught and wants to be alone.

Added DiffLines:

* TooCoolToLive: [[spoiler:Ferid, whose combat prowess is compared to Georg Prime.]]

* WinBackTheCrowd: After the stylistic deviations of Suikoden III with its paired party system and its trinity sight and Suikoden IV with its sea voyaging, lack of depth and shrunken parties, Suikoden V returns the series to a style of gameplay and storytelling much closer in style to the first two games. It seems to have mostly worked, as Suikoden V is the less divisive game since the first two entries.

It seems to have mostly worked, as Suikoden V is the less divisive game since the first two entries.entries, but sadly was not enough to make Konami bother with the main timeline again (although the lack of [[MyRealDaddy Yoshitaka Murayama]] might factor on that as well) and they turned towards [[VideoGame/SuikodenTierkreis spin-off titles]] which are another can of issues.

* FridgeBrilliance: At the end of the game, Lu becomes Babbage's assistant while Sorensen gets pushed to the side. It might seem like he's being unfairly treated, but in truth it's most likely because Sorensen learned all he could under the tutelage of Babbage, and so he got assigned menial tasks until after the end of the game, where he gets sent to research gears in a mountainous area. Meanwhile Lu had enthusiasm for the subject and was willing to learn, so Babbage taught her instead while Sorensen kept trying to suck up to Babbage instead of trying to learn more on his own. In the end he wasn't being treated unfairly by Babbage, Babbage just knew Sorensen would rather live in the professor's shadow and took on someone else until he had a good excuse to make Sorensen think for himself.
* FridgeHorror:
** Visit Rainwall after [[spoiler:the end of the Godwin occupation]] and talk to some of the [=NPCs=]. These people have clearly been put through trials of their own.
** Visit Doraat after you liberate it the second time. The town is significantly less populated than the last time you were there, [[spoiler: given that Childerich led a ruthless mass-slaughter of innocent civilians]] and everybody is completely shell-shocked and morose.

* TheScrappy: Averted with Roy. Despite having the traditional Star of Scrappies (Chizoku Star), like Hoi and Guillaume before him, he is more of a JerkWithAHeartOfGold, is quite important to the plot and has some CharacterDevelopment. [[spoiler:He also perform a HeroicSacrifice to protect the HQ castle if the Prince refuses to go along Lucretia's plan and abandon it.]]

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Getting [[spoiler: Roy's HeroicSacrifice]], ''the'' CrowningMomentOfAwesome for the entire game, locks out the best ending, [[spoiler: leading to the death of the girl he loves, and who he sees as he dies.]] "Wasted" doesn't begin to describe it; more like "machine-gunned it and left it in a ditch."

Added DiffLines:

* SlowPacedBeginning: The first hours of ''Suikoden V'' suffers from this because of WorldBuilding and for highlighting the Sacred Games.

* AwesomeButImpractical: The Falena's Finest Unite attack. It is, to date, the only 6-person Unite in the series, and involves some of the strongest characters in the game, with the Prince, Lyon, Georg, Miakis, Kyle, and Galleon taking part. It deals 0.2 to 0.4 damage (depending on the average affection points of the non-Prince characters involved) to all enemies, which is a lot more than it sounds like given that that damage involves 6 people and is spreading the damage to the entire enemy group. So why is it impractical? Because your only chance to use it is when retaking [[spoiler:Sol-Falena]], which has only boss encounters with one or two enemies. You can't use it before OR after that, since Georg is only in the team with the rest of Falena's Finest for that brief window (joining shortly before that and splitting off from the Prince's group shortly after that). You can use it in a NewGamePlus thanks to Georg being a permanent party member [[spoiler: after retaking Sol Falena]] but the trope still applies because Georg is a GlassCannon against the FinalBoss.

* CompleteMonster: Childerich is the most brutal PsychoForHire in the Suikoden series. A [[AxCrazy sadistic psychopath]] who [[BloodKnight lives to fight and kill]], Childerich centers in on the Prince of Falena, occupying a town and executing people at random as "sympathizers", solely because the town itself was occupied by the rebels. In battle, Childerich happily uses his own men as {{human shield}}s before escaping and later taking the city of Doraat. During the Second Battle of Doraat, he would have chosen to burn the whole city rather than letting it fall into the hands of the Prince's army. In his final battle with the Prince, Childerich attempts to murder the Prince and his comrades, showing he has nothing but contempt for all that lives and his only enjoyment in life being murder and death.

Added DiffLines:

* IronWoobie: Lymsleia. At the start of the game, she's ''ten''. The stuff she goes through would usually BreakTheCutie.

** Lucretia Merces has became quite polarizing as the years went on, due to how the story portrays her intelligence and tactical prowess. Some fans consider her a cool tactician lady, and probably the smartest one in the whole series, while others find her to be a unrealistic overpowered MaryTzu who is adored by everyone that isn't Sialeeds.

* ThatOneSidequest: Just like the others Suikoden, recruiting the 108 Stars of Destiny is no easy task, but ''V'' is the toughest one to accomplish that, as hardly anyone will join the Prince just by asking them to. There is always a pre-requirement, like having a certain character in the party or doing a FetchQuest for them. To say nothing of the [[PermanentlyMissableContent missable ones]].

* ViewerGenderConfusion - Many players thought that the prince was a chick when they first saw the cover. His clothes look like ones that women would usually wear.

** TheVeryDefinitelyFinalDungeon, [[spoiler:the Ashtwal Mountains]], where you have to split into three parties and constantly switch among them to advance through the dungeon.

** TheVeryDefinitelyFinalDungeon, [[spoiler:the Ashtwal Mountains]], where you have to split into three parties and constantly switch among them to advance through the dungeon. While it isn't as bad as the forest above, there is only one SavePoint (which is at the entrance) and, after the three parties regroups, it is a PointOfNoReturn. Also, leaving the dungeon means that the three bosses have to be defeated again.
