After a tepid reception in the US, the film was somewhat better received both critically and financially in the UK, mainly due to the film's British references and humor and the [[AllStarCast well-known UK actors]]. When released in America the film had an 18% on Rotten Tomatoes, which climbed to a 28% after its release in Britain.

* HarsherInHindsight: The film briefly teases [[spoiler:Watson pulling a FaceHeelTurn before revealing that Moriarty is once again the true mastermind]]. Creator/ChiwetelEjiofor would later get the chance to play a real BigBad in [[WesternAnimation/TheLionKing2019 another animated film]] featuring Music/EltonJohn's music.

* WereStillRelevantDammit: The marketing campaign had lots of posters of the characters spoofing posters of other recent movies, including [[http://www.slashfilm.com/sherlock-gnomes-poster/ Deadpool]], [[http://animatedviews.com/2018/lots-of-parody-posters-for-sherlock-gnomes-released/ The Greatest Showman, Wonder Woman, and more.]] Bizarrely, this includes numerous films which are either unsuitable for this film's young target audience, or that they would have no interest in watching anyway. * WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: The movie has characters being kidnapped, characters seeming to die, and an antagonist who wants to commit genocide on all the gnomes in London.

* CaptainObviousReveal: Most of his scenes strongly telegraph to the audience that [[spoiler: Watson is the one behind the mysteries]]. [[spoiler: Moriarty's]] prominent presence in the prologue as well as detailed flashbacks also make it no surprise that [[spoiler: he's NotQuiteDead]].

** This film retroactively makes Creator/ChiwetelEjiofor the ''third'' Watson, after Creator/JudeLaw and Creator/MartinFreeman, to join the [[Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse MCU]]. For bonus points he made his debut in the MCU starring [[Film/DoctorStrange2016 opposite another Sherlock]] [[spoiler: whom he also turned against]].

* HoYay: As usual, Watson and Sherlock. While downplayed compared to other contemporary adaptations of the source material, the implications are still quite blatant. [[spoiler: In particular, Watson’s MotiveRant during his initial FaceHeelTurn]] almost sounds like a neglected lover complaining about being unappreciated, which is further emphasised by Gnomeo and Juliet (who actually ''are'' a couple) having the same conflict.

* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: Music/MaryJBlige's song "Stronger Than I Ever Was" can come off as very catchy, while the entire film is sub-par.

* MoralEventHorizon: Moriarty crosses it with his plan to destroy every gnome in London.

* {{Anvilicious}}: The film's message of not putting work before loved ones is delivered far from subtly. In particular, the scenes between Sherlock and Watson are so heavy-handed with this that [[spoiler: Watson presumably pulling a FaceHeelTurn]] is nearly impossible to be surprised by.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: Irene's song, and her entire scene for that matter, adds very little to the film and seems to only exist so Music/MaryJBlige can contribute to the soundtrack.
* CaptainObviousReveal: The fact that Watson was the one behind the mysteries was strongly telegraphed, as was the reveal that [[NeverFoundTheBody Moriarty]] would come back into play during the climax.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: [[spoiler: Watson committing a FaceHeelTurn has likely never been done before in any Holmes-related works, and may have given a chance for Sherlock to display a genuine MyGodWhatHaveIDone moment. Unfortunately, it's revealed that [[CaptainObviousReveal Moriarty is once again behind everything]] and Watson is instantly back on Sherlock's side.]]

** In the movie, Tower Bridge gets stopped by the people working the bridge for a while due to the gnomes trying to save their friends and family. Two years later, [[www.bbc.com/news/amp/uk-england-london-53877433 Tower Bridge’s gates would be stuck for an hour]] due to technical problems, with some people on social media comparing it to the movie.
