** The film places a lot of emphasis on Elton's piano skills, but little on his vocals. We never hear once about his mid-80s vocal cord surgery and how it changed him from a tenor to a baritone, rendering him unable to sing the iconic falsetto notes that made his voice stand out in the 70s. Given the musical nature of the story though, it's possible they didn't want to limit Elton's singing to only his tenor songs earlier on and only his baritone songs later on.

** Between this film and Film/BohemianRhapsody, you'd be hard-pressed to pinpoint what Dexter Fletcher actually thinks of John Reid, with this film portraying him as a predatory monster who was responsible for Elton's worst drug excesses, while in Rhapsody he's a completely decent guy who's set up to be fired by that kind of person. That said, the two films were written by different people (none of whom were Fletcher) from the differing perspectives of the acts he managed (both of which oversaw their films), and Fletcher was presumably bound to the script already provided when he took over on Rhapsody, assuming he even filmed any of Reid’s scenes in that film.

** In the epilogue we are told that Elton John founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation and has since raised over $400 millions for the cause. Impressive, but also somewhat out of the blue, since AIDS hasn't been mentioned at all in the movie. There are, however, several deleted scenes showing Elton John becoming aware of the disease and even getting tested himself. It's understandable that the filmmakers might not have wanted to add to the already huge pile of movies equating gay men with AIDS, but it's still a shame since it meant cutting the only subplot which showed Elton John caring about something outside of himself.

This gets especially uncomfortable when people (including, to worrying numbers, straight women) treat the sex scene between Elton and John Reid as wank fodder more than anything else — and it isn't even graphic. Although it's certainly important and wonderful for being the first major-studio film sex scene between two male characters, as acknowledged by the main cast and crew themselves, it's also far from the only thing about Rocketman that celebrates Elton's sexuality and provides something vital for gay representation in mainstream cinema. This gets especially uncomfortable when people (including, to worrying numbers, straight women) treat the sex scene between Elton and John Reid as wank fodder more than anything else — and it isn't even graphic. It has no thrusts, the kissing is tame.... One may get the impression that it's only considered so shockingly "hot" and fixated upon by some due to the fact that two conventionally attractive, famous male actors are in the scene. Even worse, there's an unfortunately somewhat loud minority of fans who CannotTellFictionFromReality, harassing Egerton and Madden for doing their jobs and acting their roles in this movie; harassing Egerton's real-life girlfriend, again because Egerton did his job as an actor and pretended to be Elton in a movie where he had to do his job and act; and harassing Madden's close friend, roommate, friend and rumoured partner roommate Brandon Flynn for "getting getting in the way" way of a movie "ship"... which both in the film canon and Elton John's real life, didn't even end well. Egerton himself has vocally asked the public to care about more than just the Elton-Reid sex scene and its perceived Fanservice qualities, as well as repeatedly affirmed that his friendship with Madden is a platonic and professional bond that's a gazillion light years miles away from Elton and Reid's romantic and sexual relations. (Which should really be easy to grasp, and is to people outside of said obsessive fan minority.)
