* TookTheBadFilmSeriously: Despite the poor material he was stuck with, Jeff Altman does surprisingly well, showing a natural charisma and confidence and letting the audience know he was in on the joke. His showmanship and comedy skills are one of the few parts of the show most everyone agrees worked.

* ValuesDissonance: Given the show's Japanese theme and the time period it aired in, this was bound to happen. For instance, in the premiere episode, Jeff says that he thinks Mie is attracted to his "sexy round eyes".

** It also wasn't the first time Mie and Kei had a go at cracking the U.S. market. As early as 1978, they were releasing songs in English and playing Las Vegas in a bid for a U.S. record deal. The following year they released a self-titled album featuring the disco single "Kiss in the Dark," which managed to crack ''Billboard'' magazine's Top 40 and also chart in Canada (and went all the way to #1 in Hawaii). This proved to be inopportune, as disco music was entering its death throes and would be more or less a twitching corpse at the time ''PL&J'' aired.

YMMV sinkhole (this is a YMMV trope anyway), and This Troper; with those removed, this becomes a Zero Context Example. If you want to re-add it, don\'t use first person voice or \"this troper\" and give some insight as to why it\'s So Bad Its Good.
