* IKnewIt: A common bit of fan speculation after Sunset's HeelFaceTurn was that she would return to Equestria to apologize to Princess Celestia for being a SpoiledBrat. While it wasn't the primary purpose of her visit, Sunset does meet with Celestia and apologize, which plays out exactly how the many fan works portraying it did.

Now Trivia requiring official confirmation it was made in response to complaints.

* AuthorsSavingThrow:
** After Sunset Shimmer's first return to Equestria in ''[[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyEquestriaGirlsMagicalMovieNight Magical Movie Night]]'' was widely seen as [[TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot wasted potential for how little was done with the idea]], ''Forgotten Friendship'' has Sunset go back to Equestria for much longer, interact with Princess Twilight again, and even [[IKnewIt apologize to Princess Celestia]].
** Some found the group's ponied-up costumes from ''Legends of Everfree'' to be gaudy and overdone. The group gets new costumes in this film that are considerably simpler in design.
** One of the complaints towards Juniper Montage and the climax of "Mirror Magic" was Juniper's unnecessary and nonthreatening [[OneWingedAngel transformation]], and many felt that the shtick of villains becoming DrunkOnTheDarkSide was getting stale. While the heroines do transform in the climax of the special, the villain does not, becoming DrunkWithPower in a more realistic way (by having a powerful, easily exploited ability that they gradually abused more and more), which many fans appreciated.

Foe Yay has been cut

* FoeYay: [[spoiler:Wallflower Blush seemed to want Sunset's attention more than anything else. The LuminescentBlush when Sunset is nice to her at the end only adds fuel to the fire. Also, the way she lashes out at Sunset for forgetting her could be seen as the actions of a WomanScorned.]]

* CaptainObviousReveal: It's fairly easy to deduce that [[spoiler:Wallflower Blush]] is the culprit due to [[TheLawOfConservationOfDetail the fact that the show wouldn't introduce a new character with a name and personality unless they were going to become important]] and the only legitimate attempt at a RedHerring is Trixie, who was eliminated by then.

* HarsherInHindsight:
** What happens to the Sunset [[spoiler:and Wallflower]] is pretty much the premise of ''Fanfic/BackgroundPony''.
** It's harsh to take [[spoiler:Wallflower's motive into consideration when you realize that, outside of Crystal Prep's students, none of the extra characters introduced like the Dazzlings, Gloriosa or Juniper ever make an additional appearance after their first (or if they do, it'd be a brief, speechless cameo or OneSceneWonder and that's it) which means that Wallflower's plight and desire to be remembered and noticed will inevitably be for naught. That said, it doubles as HeartwarmingInHindsight as, now that she has brought herself in the forefront, she can now be used as reference for fan artists and fanfic writers, ensuring that she ''will'' be noticed and remembered]].

* MemeticMutation:
** When the premise first came out, references to ''Fanfic/BackgroundPony'' became widespread. Doubled when it actually aired, with [[spoiler:Wallflower and Sunset being "inflicted by the Background Pony Curse" and calling Wallflower's VillainSong the "Background Pony Song"]].
** Editing Wallflower Blush into backgrounds of virtually any scene -- even non-pony stuff, like music videos or classic photos -- has become a recurring joke due to this movie showing her as being in the background of scenes from previous movies.
* {{Narm}}: [[spoiler:The resolution, where the main characters undergo their dramatic magical girl transformations and manifest a powerful friendship laser in order to... blow up a small rock. Which was in the possession of a completely unarmed student [[HeelRealization who had already given up and would likely have cooperated if they asked]]. Overkill much? (It doesn’t help that the transformation sequence alone is about 10 seconds longer than the actual battle itself.)]]
* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: The final fight was originally praised for [[AuthorsSavingThrow fixing criticism from prior ones]] (gaudy transformations, the [[OneWingedAngel villain transformations]] becoming stale). The subsequent ''Rollercoaster of Friendship'' took its flaws UpToEleven ([[AntiClimaxBoss lack of actual fights or danger]], abrupt forgiveness for villains who had little to deserve it) causing the fight here to be viewed less favorably.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Out of everyone who had their memories of Sunset erased, Human Twilight Sparkle was the only character who wasn't too sure if Sunset was really bad or not, as she wasn't a student as Canterlot High school before the events of ''Friendship Games'' so she didn't really know Sunset back when she was a bully like everyone else did. With that in mind, Twilight could have checked to see if Sunset was really not a bully anymore through questioning her nice behavior despite being considered a bully and possibly even include the other Humane Five on that questioning, which would not only give them more purpose in the special but it would also actually make their bond with Sunset really speak out to how strong it is despite their memories of her erased. But unfortunately, Twilight's suspicions of Sunset is tossed out the window halfway into the special.

That is intentional as why Wallflower was the villain. The problem is covered under Informed Wrongness:

* UnintentionallySympathetic: Sunset Shimmer is this throughout the entire movie. She is meant to be painted in the wrong for [[spoiler:ignoring Wallflower Blush and ended up provoking her as she in response robbed Sunset of her friends' friendship memories of her, as well as her friendships with everyone and thus made Sunset an outcast who was viewed as the same bully she was before her HeelFaceTurn, to which even Trixie called her out on it.]] Except that Sunset had no way of knowing about that since she thought she earned everyone's forgiveness after saving the school many times, and [[spoiler:Wallflower just simply failing to get her attention and then resorting to taking Sunset's friendships away from her comes off as total DisproportionateRetribution,]] especially since with how Sunset's redemption was very well deserved since she worked hard to earn it that suddenly to have it be taken away from her over a petty reason is pretty unjustified and doesn't really earn [[spoiler:Wallflower]] any sympathy points.

About not caring about the conflict.

* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: While it's rather an exaggeration to consider the film in this territory, the treatment Sunset Shimmer gets in this film from her friends as well as the villain [[spoiler:Wallflower Blush]] can provoke these feelings. The fact that she spends most of the movie as an outcast with everyone hating her including her friends since their friendship memories of her was erased, the villain has a [[spoiler:grudge against her and seeks to ruin her life and prove she's unforgiving of redemption,]] all of which was caused because Sunset pretty much just didn't give [[spoiler:Wallflower any attention,]] and watching this all happen to a character that many fans have warmed up to since ''[[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyEquestriaGirlsRainbowRocks Rainbow Rocks ]]'' without really doing anything to deserve it seems rather mean-spirited towards Sunset.
