* UncertainAudience: The sub-franchise seems to be aiming at an older demographic than its parent show, with its high school setting, satire about modern culture and technology, and stronger emphasis on sci-fi thriller-style plotting over SliceOfLife sitcom shenanigans. However, the writing has not matured to match it; the plots often run on thin contrivances, handwaves about "Equestrian magic", and implausible coincidences anybody ''older'' than a grade schooler can immediately pick apart, robbing the attempts at more grown-up dramatics and thematics of any weight.

** The first couple of movies got some criticism for having all the girls look the same, almost to the extent of being {{Palette Swap}}s. The parent show is infamous for reusing character models all the time and just recoloring them, and among the Mane Six and many other ponies, they have the same basic body type and the only difference aside from coloration is their hairstyle and cutie mark. But because the designs of the ponies are so simple, it's not always apparent that they use the same base assets, while the human characters have clothes with more details that give away the reused assets, since all of their outfits consist of a T-shirt and skirt with boots, with minor differences between them like Pinkie and Rainbow having jackets.

** Flash Sentry is a high school student wearing a t-shirt with a frayed collar, and his guitar is a Gibson Firebird non-reverse, a notoriously expensive and rare instrument that the typical working musician couldn't hope to afford in his lifetime.[[note]]The [[StealthPun pony car]] he drives in the first film is probably more affordable than his guitar.[[/note]] His bass player has the bass variant, which is even more rare. Don't think about it too hard; maybe the animators meant to draw a Fender Mustang and Mustang Bass, which would have been another VisualPun and much closer to a high school student's price range.
** Sunset Shimmer has been shown to be living by herself in a two-story apartment complete with lavish decorations, including a few electric guitars hanging on the wall, and the only job she's been shown to have is in one of the shorts as a waitress. How a high school student is able to afford all of this on a waitress salary is never brought up, nor is [[UndeadTaxExemption how she got a job and an apartment in the first place despite being from another dimension]]. But these details have never been plot-critical, and are not meant to be examined that closely.

* DracoInLeatherPants: The Sirens/The Dazzlings are this for the series as a whole. They're the most popular villains by a country mile, and as a result of that, they get portrayed in fan works as three lost souls who are in a very hard place as a result of no powers since they lost them at the end of Rainbow Rocks, In canon, the Sirens are a TerribleTrio who want to spread a HatePlague, caused people to turn against their friends, fed off of the negative energy they create, and showed absolutely no remorse for any of this. And as far as "hard place" goes, as of ''Sunset's Backstage Pass'', the Dazzlings aren't really shown to really be in one other than having no powers, and are in fact shown to be doing decently as they are performing music again (albeit with vical processing). As far as attitude goes, it isn't really made all thay clear whether they have reformed or not. WordofGod says they are in the middle.

** Where's the human world's Sunset Shimmer? It's normally assumed that she's out there somewhere, given that everyone else seems to have a counterpart in both worlds, but the whereabouts of a hypothetical "Human Sunset" were never brought up. This leaves fans to fill in the blanks; some fanfics have Sunset meeting her human counterpart, some have the two aware of each other and nothing else, some have the two living entirely separate lives and never interacting, and some say that there's only one Sunset. In fact, WordofGod has confirmed that the the finale originally planned for the series was gonna reveal the answer to this very question, but for reasons unknown it got pulled, leaving many fans fealing insulted.

It's rare to find a fan work that tries to stay in line with the canon portrayal of the Sirens as pure villains, and even more rare to find someone who actively ''dislikes'' them.

''Friendship Games'', the later antagonists of the series have either never appeared again or only appeared as brief cameos later on, Games'' despite most of being massively hyped up as EvilCounterparts to the Rainbooms. And while Dance Magic does give them reforming and becoming friends a little more screentime, they don't really add much to the plot of the special.
** Gloriosa Daisy completely disappears after her camp is saved from Filthy Rich's clutches in '' Legend of Everfree''. Juniper Montage foes the same even though she was seen hanging out
with the heroines.Rainbooms plus Starlight Glimmer at the end of the Mirror Magic special. And after Wallflower Blush became Sunset Shimmer's new friend in ''Forgotten Friendship'', she too never makes another appearance again after her reformation in said special.
** The Rainbooms themselves don't get all that much development throughoit the course of the series. At most they just have the exact same personalities as their pony counterparts do.

** Aside from Sunset and Twilight, the idea of characters from either world crossing over to the other has come up ''once'', for Starlight Glimmer. This despite the fact that the core cast in both worlds have shown interest in seeing what's on the other side, and at this point there's little reason why they couldn't. ''Spring Breakdown'' finally saw the human Twilight and Rainbow Dash cross over, but only because they had to escape a monster through a convenient portal nearby, and they just hightail it to Twilight's castle to return home through the mirror, avoiding all contact with others on the way.

*** With Twilight, her having wings implies she's an alicorn like the Equestrian Twilight, is this justifiable by circumstance or hasn't she earned her wings like the Equestrian Twilight did. ''Spring Breakdown'' had the human Twilight go to Equestria and she turned out to be a unicorn in that world, so discussions on why her human ponied up forms have wings are also part of the debate now.
*** For Sunset, the CharacterDevelopment she's gone through and the understanding of friendship and magic she's achieved are impressive, but the fandom can't agree on if it's enough to earn her alicorn status or not. The climax of ''Friendship Games'', where she combines on the powers of the Humane Five in herself and turns into "Daydream Shimmer", an angelic being with a pair of HotWings, makes this matter all the more troublesome for discussion -- some would say this moment most of all is proof Sunset is worthy of ascension, but still others think not.[[note]]A related point is that it isn't agreed on what makes one eligible to become an alicorn, with some widely interpreting it has to be something you're predestined for, not something that just anypony could earn.[[/note]]

*** With Twilight, her having wings in her ponied-up form implies she's an alicorn like the Equestrian Twilight, is this justifiable by circumstance or hasn't she but that gets into the topic of if she's earned her wings like the Equestrian Princess Twilight did.did or if she just has them because she's Twilight's counterpart, and that invites debate about which should be the logic the series follows. When specials came where she returns to Equestria and is that it isn't agreed on still a normal unicorn, debates began about what her Daydream Shimmer form means then. Both of the girls each having winged powered-up forms but unicorns in Equestria also invites discussion as what makes one worthy or eligible to become an alicorn, with some widely interpreting it alicorn anyway, which has to be something you're predestined for, not something that just anypony could earn.[[/note]]long been ambiguous throughout the franchise.

Repair Dont Respond. If she was shown not angsting before getting used to it then an example.

* AngstWhatAngst: Sunset Shimmer seems to take being in a world where one of her natural abilities (unicorn magic) is nullified unusually well, even ''before'' she settles down and makes friends there. For a long time, the series avoided talking about her possibly returning to Equestria, and when it finally does come up in ''Mirror Magic'', it's treated like a plot point and Sunset shows no emotional reaction to going back at all, nor does she dwell too much on being back in her pony form. Her lack of angst over this is, however, justified, since it is explicity stated that she has been in the human world some time before Princess Twilight became Princess Celestia's student, meaning that she has been there for years and, thus, has gotten used to it.

** Despite ''Movie Magic'' teasing Starlight Glimmer possibly spending some time in the human world, no following shorts or specials took advantage of that.

* DracoInLeatherPants: The Sirens/The Dazzlings are this for the ''Equestria Girls'' series as a whole. They're the most popular villains from the franchise by a country mile, and they often get portrayed in fan works much more sympathetically than their canon counterparts. Since very little is revealed about their history, fans have taken semi-canon sources (like the [[ComicBook/MyLittlePonyFiendshipIsMagic issue of the comic book that focused on the Sirens]]) or just made up backstories out of whole cloth. The Sirens are often made out to be lost souls, sisters who have no one but each other, [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld ageless beings]] who are now forced to WalkTheEarth with nothing, {{Tragic Monster}}s who don't want to feed on hate but have no choice, or showing [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone remorse for the things they've done]]. In canon, the Sirens are a TerribleTrio who want to spread a HatePlague, caused people to be {{brainwashed}} against their friends, [[EmotionEater feed off of the negative energy they create]], try to TakeOverTheWorld, and show absolutely no remorse for any of it. Even in their appearance in ''Sunset's Backstage Pass'', the Sirens don't have a HeelRealization; the closest they get to one is admitting their plan didn't work, and [[RetiredMonster they're just as nasty as they ever were]]. It's rare to find a fan work that tries to stay in line with the canon portrayal of the Sirens as villains, and even rarer to find someone who actively ''dislikes'' them.

* ShipToShipCombat: Sunset x Twilight ("Sunlight") shippers tend to be vocal with their hatred of Sunset x Flash and Twilight x Flash, and shippers for those two can be as equally vocal in their hatred of Sunset x Twilight. When [[WordOfGod Katrina Headley]] stated that they had intended Sunset as AmbiguouslyBi but "left it open to interpretation" to avoid getting in the way of fan ships, ironically the wars intensified: the Sunlight shippers felt vindicated and pointed to Headley's comments as proof that their ship was canon, and the shippers for one of the two with Flash pushed back harder than ever and pointed out that Headley specifically avoided stating if any particular ship was canon or not.
