* UncannyValley: Averted. The creators of the film learned their lesson from [[WesternAnimation/ThePolarExpress that other movie]][[note]]And, after a change in directors, [[WesternAnimation/MarsNeedsMoms subsequently forgot it]][[/note]] and intentionally stylized the character designs to avoid this. With the exception of a couple of moments where things seem to move a bit ''too'' fluidly, one could easily mistake this for any other animated film.

* FunnyAneurysmMoment: At the time of Nebbercracker's flashback (and possibly even the rest of the movie), Constance would've been fat enough to be the "Fat Woman" in a circus' freakshow. In America. But since, that country's obesity epidemic has gotten so bad that people just as obese ride around every shopping center in mobility scooters every day, and nobody bats an eye.

** A dimwitted fat kid named WesternAnimation/{{Chowder}}.

* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: Zee's wanton destruction of DJ's mother's vase during her introduction scene, which she demonstrates to DJ in order to intimidate him into letting her do whatever she wants while playing babysitter at night. Afterwards, Zee is never shown to use similar intimidation tactics towards DJ again, and besides some light teasing she doesn't really cause much trouble, and even steps foward to tell her boyfriend off when he takes his bullying of DJ too far. The scene where Zee needlessly destroys his parent's property is also never brought up again.

* EnsembleDarkhorse: Mr. Nebbercracker [[spoiler: (particularly once his true colors are revealed.]] revealed)]]. Although he plays a prominent role in the film, he's actually absent for a majority of it.

** Before this movie even existed, WesternAnimation/CourageTheCowardlyDog already had an episode named "House Calls", where a jealous, living house who emits woman-like groans and has a ''carpet'' for a tongue, forbids its owner from having any neighbors.

* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: It's a movie about a man-eating house (though to be fair [[spoiler:its victims are brought back at the end]]) with its origin involving [[spoiler:a woman being drowned in concrete]]. You know... for kids!

* HypeBacklash: It received some during the 2006 UsefulNotes/AcademyAward season when it was nominated for "Best Animated Feature," both because most felt it wasn't good enough for such a title and animation purists arguing that motion capture was not animation. To be fair, that was a ''terrible'' year for animated features.[[note]]The other nominees were ''WesternAnimation/{{Cars}}'' and ''WesternAnimation/HappyFeet'', the later of which ended up winning. Some also argued that ''WesternAnimation/OverTheHedge'' got [[AwardSnub snubbed]].[[/note]]

* RetroactiveRecognition: Look at the credits if it's TheNewTens and after - Creator/MaggieGyllenhaal, Creator/SteveBuscemi, Kevin James, Nick Cannon, Jason Lee, Jon Heder, Catherine O'Hara, Fred Willard, even Kathleen Turner as [[spoiler:Constance]]. It's almost an AllStarCast!
** More recently, the director of the film, Gil Kenan, is now much, much more well known, thanks to another film he's currently writing. The film? The [[TheMovie official movie adaptation]] of ''VideoGame/FiveNightsAtFreddys,'' a series he's [[AscendedFanboy explicitly stated he loves.]]

* GettingCrapPastTheRadar: Chowder:
--> "My dad's at the pharmacy, and my mom's at the movies with her personal trainer."
** The way Chowder says it is like he's almost ''resigned'' to it as being normalcy - his dad knows, his mom knows, and he knows, and he's just "Well, that's just how it is for us."

* CounterpartComparison:
** DJ, Chowder, and Jenny have been compared to [[Franchise/HarryPotter Harry, Ron, and Hermione]] respectively. Not so much in how they look, but in how they behave.
** Mr. Nebbercracker looks a lot like Gollum from ''Film/LordOfTheRings''.

Added DiffLines:

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Only two rooms of the house, the entrance hall and the basement, are actually explored before the kids are forced to escape it.

* JerkassWoobie: [[spoiler:Constance.]] May also count as WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds.

to:

* JerkassWoobie: [[spoiler:Constance.]] May also count [[spoiler:Constance;]] she may have been a shrill child-hater, but [[spoiler:her only experience with kids is them throwing things at her and teasing her, which is what was done to her in the circus where she was being essentially held prisoner. While she becomes a monster after possessing the house, the ending implies that she's as WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds.much a victim of that as anyone, since she's only able to rest in peace when the house is destroyed.]]

Added DiffLines:

** The name, aesthetic, and general difficulty of the fictional video game ''Thou Art Dead'' became this after the real life video game ''VideoGame/DarkSouls'' featured a similar art style and difficulty as well as featuring a catchphrase ("You Died") similar to the fictional game's title.

** Mr. Nebbercracker looks a lot like Gollum from ''Franchise/LordOfTheRings''.
