** On the console versions, ''the controls and gameplay mechanics'' are a game breaker. One of the biggest sources of difficulty in the ''Metal Gear Solid '' series have always been the controls. To put it simply, despite being a BadassNormal in every game, the franchise controls have always made it so that you fought like someone who’s never held a gun before. It legitimately felt like trying to control your limbs manually. The console versions of Peace Walker give you controls like a normal third person shooter, massively increasing your ability to fight back. Add into the the mix the previously mentioned lack of resource management due to the separate missions and it becomes remarkably easy to speedrun missions once you know the layout, popping off headshots from incredible distances (although not quite as distant as previous games due to the different aiming style) with ease while crouch running through the map, making S ranks quite easy to achieve in many missions.

Additionally, the bosses were all armored vehicles or AI, rather than single humans with superpowers. It does provide the game with a more serious tone, but not everyone liked this detraction from the rest of the series.

In a throwback to Solid Snake's escape from prison in the original ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolid'', there's more than one way to escape, but the game doesn't flat out tell you what they are, [[spoiler:instead just expecting you to look around the room for unusual prompts]], which irritates some players, and once out, you're practically naked (and literally naked, too, at least from the waist up). Luckily, unlike many other levels in the game, [[AntiFrustrationFeatures it doesn't count the torture cutscenes as cutscene interaction]], meaning that if you know what to do, you can actually escape the level with an S-Rank. You ''will'' still die a lot due to how punishing the torture session is, though. If you wonder exactly what makes this part so hard, the speed you are expected to press the button is so fast that even you somehow get past it, your finger will be strained for at least a week from pressing the button so fast. And even worst, the presses are programmed so fast that ''turbo controllers can't even keep up''.

** One of the pre-release trailers highlighted the game's multiplayer feature by showing off four Big Bosses assisting each other out. This led to speculation that the game would revolve around Big Boss leading an army of body doubles to serve as his decoys. While nothing like this actually happens in the actual story of ''Peace Walker'', it would foreshadow the end-game plot twist of ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolidVThePhantomPain'' regarding the true identity of ''that'' game's protagonist.
