* FandomRivalry: With the release of VideoGame/MarioPlusRabbidsKingdomBattle a rivalry of sorts has been brewing between the two series. Fans of the Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog franchises have become extra bitter that their two favorite series and mascots and beloved characters have been considerably downplayed and have yet to receive a proper crossover with a story and is instead regulated to what they consider a collection of sports minigames. Meanwhile, Kingdom Battle, with its completely insipid and insane setup still manages to have a plot is viewed as being very creative, having a ton of personality and charming interaction between the two universes, and regard it as a cruel twist of fate or a case of what a Mario/Sonic crossover should be, making them extra angry at the game and VideoGame/RavingRabbids series as well. This may be a case of GrassIsGreener however, and not actually hating the game itself.

** You have two of the most iconic and successful videogame franchises with a decade long rivalry, plenty of characters to work with, and you put them into a crossover... sports game? Even then, some don't mind seeing Mario and Sonic trying to best each other at sports, but the fact that there is little to no plot most of the time is something of a sore point for many.

** Tokyo 2020 was also lackluster to some for how barebones the single player experience is (the Quick Match mode is pretty all there is to it), the removal of Miis, custom music remixes, Tournament mode, and other features players loved in the previous games, the amount of Dream Events only being three, and lack of bonus content after completing Story Mode. It did not help that players had waited a long time over the skipped Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics and expected Sega to craft up something very spectacular for an Olympics happening in their country.
