* SpecialEffectFailure:
** Many viewers have pointed out that Ezekiel's lines are overdubbed, [[HongKongDub but very poorly]], as the lines frequently don't sync up to his mouth movements and sometimes even continue when his mouth isn't moving at all. While this would be forgivable if the movie's dialogue was originally in another language, the movie was entirely English to begin with. This suggests the use of ADR (a common trait of films that have undergone heavy rewrites), but due to the lack of FilmingForEasyDub, it becomes very evident.
** There's some very choppy editing in the final confrontation. Ezekiel bursts through the building roof and is standing right in front of Julia, ready to strike - then seconds later is next to Cassie, somehow unmasked.

** In the comics, Cassandra was born unable to see or walk; here [[spoiler:her mother's expedition to the Amazon was to find a possible treatment, her efforts ensuring that her daughter was born healthy even if she doesn't live to see the girl grow up]].
** Ezekiel's character arc in the comics looks at how he sought the power of the spider to "help" others but became distracted by building up his own power base so that he ultimately never got around to actually ''helping'' anyone. This takes a darker spin on that idea when he acquires the power out of a vaguely explained idea that he wants to avoid going back to nothing, and extends to pursuing the future Spider-Women on the ''chance'' that they will kill him in the future. In the name of his own life, Ezekiel is fundamentally incapable of considering alternative options beyond killing people, where a true hero would be willing to take the risk in the name of saving innocents.
** Viewed the right way, each of the three Spider-Women depicted display some qualities of the three live-action Spider-Men:
*** Julia is a shy geek who can be seen as a reflecting of Creator/TobeyMaguire's Peter Parker before the spider-bite.
*** Mattie is more "in-your-face" and a bit more distant and troubled, much like how Creator/AndrewGarfield's Peter was more distant.
*** Anya's status as a technically illegal immigrant with no family reflects how the Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse version of Peter is [[spoiler:essentially a non-person after Strange's spell erased all knowledge of Peter Parker from the world]].

** The context of Ezekiel's visions is left unexplained, and instead all that is shown is that an older Sims returns home to find his spider stolen before he is attacked by three costumed figures who let him fall to his death. Cassie suggests in the final fight that it was a case of being MetaphoricallyTrue and the events of the visions weren't actually how he was going to die, but it's never confirmed to be this and if it was a potential future then Julia, Mattie and Anya come across as more morally ambiguous characters in those visions instead of superheroes.
** Ezekiel Sims is not a good man by any standard, having shot a pregnant woman and left her to die to gain his powers. However he then spent every night of the the next 30 years having visions of the three women destined to kill him, the context of which are never fully explained. As a result it's unclear whether in these visions Sims did anything wrong to deserve his fate or even if Julia, Mattie and Anya are heroes in that potential future, and while it doesn't excuse his actions it might be easy to see him as a desperate man who has spent three decades living in fear and is willing to do anything to change his future.

quickly (although this can be attributed to her own physiology making her more resistant to the venom).
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: A major criticism about the movie is that, despite being the first live-action appearance of any Spider-Woman, never mind ''four'' of them, [[spoiler:only Cassandra has any powers and none them get their costumes in the story, nor is there any indication how this ever happens, or nor do the other three end up fighting the BigBad. Instead there's only a few clairvoyant visions promising the characters becoming costumed crime-fighters with powers [[SequelHook in the distant future]], for a hypothetical followup very few people believe will ever happen.]] This is made extremely baffling given much of the movie's marketing focused on [[spoiler:the characters in their costumes]], which raises the question: if the producers knew the audience ''wanted'' to see [[spoiler:the characters in costumes with powers]] and used misleading advertisements promising so, why not actually do so in the movie?

** Ben and Mary Parker's role in the movie comes down to just being {{fanservice}} made to give the story more connection to Spider-Man despite, once again, not having Spider-Man in it, although in this case the teasing becomes almost comically frustrating since neither character has any actual reason to be in the story, aside from Ben being Cassandra's coworker (a role that could've been played by anyone, as none of main characters had any connection to Peter Parker's origin).

* DesignatedHero: Cassie is supposedly the main hero and her character is that she only cares about saving people. But when forced to save the three teenagers, [[spoiler:she acts very cold hearted and irritable towards them and at times ''outright abandons'' them- in one case, leaving them in the woods for three hours just to go ruffle through some notes. When she rescues them after the diner incident, the only thing she has to say to them is that they only care about themselves, [[{{Hypocrite}} never mind what she just did to them ten minutes earlier]]. This is also on top of her stealing a taxi, and later, an ambulance.]]

** Ezekiel as a dark Spider-Man variant could have been a truly creepy take on our favourite wall-crawler, with all of his famous powers now being used for evil - especially as Spider-Man's other famous EvilCounterpart, Venom, is firmly a good guy in the SSU. Instead, aside from a few early lines about his wall-crawling ability, he's treated as a standard villain and with Webb's precognition cancelling out his strength and agility most of the time, not particularly difficult to defeat to the point of him becoming an unironic TheChewToy. Even his poisoning Cassie is shrugged off fairly quickly.

* SpecialEffectFailure: Many viewers have pointed out that Ezekiel's lines are overdubbed, [[HongKongDub but very poorly]], as the lines frequently don't sync up to his mouth movements and sometimes even continue when his mouth isn't moving at all. While this would be forgivable if the movie's dialogue was originally in another language, the movie was entirely English to begin with.

** There's some very choppy editing in the final confrontation. Ezekiel bursts through the building roof and is standing right in front of Julia, ready to strike - then seconds later is next to Cassie, somehow unmasked.

* CompleteMonster: Ezekiel Sims. He starts off by killing his colleagues on the expedition including Constance Webb, who was pregnant with Cassie and seeking out a very rare spider [[spoiler:in a desperate attempt to save her child]], just to take the spider and its powers for himself. Years later, having visions of being killed by three Spider-Women, poisons an FBI agent in order to force her into giving him the means to locate them, then leave her to die anyway. He also has his IT assistant use that technology and constantly threatens to kill her if she doesn't give her the results he wants. Even when they find out they were ordinary teenagers at that point in time, he hunts them down to murder them, endangering and/or killing everyone who tries to stop and even innocent bystanders. A far-cry from his much, MUCH more nobler counterpart, Ezekiel is a man fueled by greed and paranoia who would stop at nothing to prevent his fate.
