* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: Ruby is a strange example where she was rescued ''before'' she became a proper [[TheScrappy Scrappy]]. When the basic introductions and character designs of the characters were released, a good part of the fandom was quite wary of her, with many singling her out as the least likely to be their favorite character. This reaction seemed to derive from the initial descriptions of Ruby focusing on her being {{Moe}}, [[ShrinkingViolet crying and being overall shy]] and [[DoesNotLikeMen not being able to interact with men aside her father]] (which many fans thought it was rather pointless, given that the ''Love Live'' franchise has always used of ImprobablyFemaleCast and it was not different in ''Sunshine'', making it unlikely that Ruby would even interact with a male character in the first place). [[{{Expy}} Comparisons with Hanayo]] from ''School Idol Project'' also immediately ensued. Reactions however improved after the anime started airing and it was shown that Ruby wasn't just a crybaby or a ball of cuteness, was actually quite passionate about becoming an idol, her relationship with her sister Dia was favored over her DoesNotLikeMen traits, and so she won over several of her previous detractors. Should be noted as well that this was mainly a western fandom phenomenon: Ruby was actually pretty popular her homeland of Japan from the get-go.

** Riko seems to have a meme associated with her each week

* EnsembleDarkhorse: Yoshiko. Even the harsher critics of the anime adore her thanks to her hilarious antics and being of the few characters not modelled on one of the members of μ's.

And then, despite being a member of the group making her happy, Hanamaru decides not to join officially after realising that she doesn't have the stamina to keep up with the others, going back to sit in the library alone until Ruby shows up and points out that Rin, her favourite member, didn't think that she could be an idol either.]]

** The amount of InternalHomage and MythologyGag ''Sunshine'' makes to ''School Idol Project'' is also a matter of debate among viewers. Some think the similarities between the two shows' storylines (e.g. Hanamaru giving Ruby a pep talk about not letting her shyness get in the way of her dream of becoming an idol, much like Rin once did to Hanayo; even the episode recognizes this connection by making Hanamaru relate to Rin as well as Ruby having Hanayo as her favorite idol) and character roles (e.g. Mari being the upperclassman that has a pervert type of humor and subtly pushes the group into happening, much like Nozomi) are just selective references to ''School Idol Festival'', not interfering in the show's overall quality. Others, particularly casual viewers, think it's plain repetition and poor writing, and that ''Sunshine'' could've chosen more original routes to present its characters.

* ItsTheSameSoItSucks: As noted under BrokenBase, this is a very real complaint about the series, be the complaint about the girls being a rehash of &micros;'s or the storyline being too similar to the original series.

* BrokenBase: Not all fans of the original series received Sunshine that well. Some were hyped about the new girls or thought it was a good thing that the creators didn't milk out µ's and searched other ways to keep the franchise going, but others weren't. Most of the 'anti-Aqours' brigade doesn't want to let go the original girls and calls the new ones boring copies of µ's.

** The third episode is full of them. When the curtain goes up at their first concert, there are people there, but nowhere near enough to fill the hall - which was the requirement they had to meet to become an official club. The realisation is obvious on all three members' faces, but they still go on with the show. After the power goes out, Chika keeps singing, only to begin to cry from the sheer hopelessness of it all. Thankfully, it turns to happy tears after her sister shows up and reveals that Chika told her the wrong time -- and the car park is full of people waiting to see them.
