** The Bat Fangire, more commonly known as the 1986 King, is a ruthless tyrant who fails to understand the concept of love. As the original lord of all Fangires, the King uses his position to annihilate the Merman and Franken races, as well as persecute Jiro ([[LastOfHisKind the last Wolfen]]). When he finds out that his wife Maya has fallen in love with Otoya Kurenai (the original Kamen Rider Ixa), the King offers Jiro, as well as the sole surviving Merman and Franken (Ramon and Riki respectively), a chance to avoid extermination in exchange for killing Otoya. When they choose to escape instead, the King forcibly transforms them into [[EmpathicWeapon Empathic Weapons]]. He then kidnaps Otoya and attempts to use his life energy to feed Castle Doran, the King's living castle. When Otoya escapes, the King exposes his lack of any sense of love toward his own wife by using the life of his own son, Taiga Nobori (Kamen Rider Saga), as blackmail to prevent her from seeing Otoya again. This disgusts Kivat-bat the 2nd, who is meant to be the King's loyal TransformationTrinket, so much that he offers Otoya a chance to become Kamen Rider Dark Kiva in order to destroy the King.

* MemeticLoser: Kiva himself is his, at least in the [[Toys/{{SHFiguarts}} Figuarts]] side of the fanbase. As of 2016, Kiva ''still'' hasn't gotten an official Figuarts while almost every other Kamen Rider (Including ones from ''[[UpToEleven Kiva itself]]'') has already had one. Even one-off riders like [[Series/KamenRiderFourze Nadeshiko]] and [[Series/KamenRiderDrive Sangou]] have already seen a Figuarts release before Kiva. It's common to see fans joking about how certain Riders and [[Franchise/PrettyCure Precures]] have received a Figuarts before Kiva[[note]]the most extreme example being that '''Music/MichaelJackson''' got a [[https://www.amazon.com/Bandai-Tamashii-Nations-Figuarts-Criminal/dp/B00KMO124W Figuarts]] before Kiva - not [[Series/JoJosBizarreAdventure Man In The Mirror]]; Michael Jackson himself![[/note]].

* FetishFuel: Jiro and his silk and leather outfits, Ramon for anyone with a thing for shotas (a fandom term for his actor is "Shotabait"), Maya's ENTIRE OUTFIT, and King's outfit. A lot of the things Taiga and Wataru do in episodes are particularly suggestive (there's some serious HoYay and [[spoiler:Bro Yay]] going on here).

** [[spoiler: '''NEO FANGIRES PAPA!''']] [[labelnote:Explanation(SPOILERS)]] The abrupt reveal at the very end of the final episode about the Neo Fangires by Wataru's son from the future is often mocked by fans.[[/labelnote]]

* DesignatedProtagonist: Otoya Kurenai. His good qualities perk up few and far in-between each other, and he tends to think with his other head around women.

* TheScrappy: Ryo Itoya, the Spider Fangire. He harassed both Yuri in 1986 and Megumi in 2008, and his creepy attitude doesn't help it either. [[spoiler:Fans cheered when Mio, of all people, [[TakeThatScrappy kills him in a spectacular way]].]]

* UnfortunateImplications: Hoo boy, does this series use a lot of possessive dialogue. This is mostly due to cultural differences between gender roles but for western ears this does not go down well.

** An example wherein RealLifeWritesThePlot, and the problem wasn't stupid appearance: Kiva's default form is perfectly fine on its own, but it and his Arms Monster forms were too heavy for Creator/SeijiTakaiwa to act in properly, and in fact he nearly died once due to the weight. This is why [[SuperMode Emperor Form]] was overused for the series, as it was far lighter and easier to work with. Unfortunately, it came at the cost of trashing the rest of Kiva's powers.
* WhatTheHellHero: Taiga [[spoiler: kills Maya, the mother of both him and Wataru.]] Wataru doesn't seem to be upset by this fact and instead [[spoiler: eagerly accepts his help in the fight against the revived 1986 King.]] It is shown later that [[spoiler: he didn't really kill her,]] but still, that was way too accepting.
** Otoya and the way he [[spoiler: handled his relationship with Yuri. Where to even begin? He risked life and limb to be with Yuri and almost nearly got killed by Jiro for her sake. After all the drama, tragedy, and life-altering events he went through to be with Yuri who finally declared her anguished heartfelt love for him, what does he do? He lets himself get seduced by Maya and throws away his relationship with Yuri like it was yesterday's garbage in the most heartless and thoughtless way possible. Granted, without Otoya hooking up with Maya, Wataru wouldn't have been born but the way Otoya handled the whole situation made him come off as extremely callous and heartless despite all the things he had gone through to finally win Yuri's heart. It really says something when even Jiro, his romantic rival and the man who tried to KILL HIM over Yuri previously tried to warn Otoya to stay away from Maya and not break Yuri's heart.]]

** It even goes down to basic features for the Riders. IXA only uses the fake Fuestles once in the entire show, likewise with Kiva using some of his powers (Dogabaki and Shoodoran for starters) just once or twice.
