** The first three movies are very popular on Latin American (with the fourth one being [[ContestedSequel more contested but still popular]]) and are considered a major FountainOfMemes in a similar vein to ''Franchise/Shrek'' and Franchise/DespicableMe'', like with Norway, part of the reason is that the dub makes a lot of moments funnier.

** Some fans felt that Diego has been wasted in the sequels, as he has a smaller role in the subsequent films than he did in the original. It doesn't help his past as [[HeelFaceTurn a bad guy]] is barely mentioned in the sequels outside of a brief talk with Shira about how he left his former pack in Continental Drift and a comment by Sid about how he and his pack tried to eat them in Adventures of Buck Wild.

* ArcFatigue: Sid's abandonment issues. While a lot of fans like it given they feel it turns Sid into a much more interesting character that just an average PluckyComicRelief, some fans also felt the arc was overstaying his welcome given it has being the main focus of his character arc for the first three sequels and wished the writers did something else with the character. Ironically his arc in ''Collison Course'' went with the character in another direction and it was universally despised.

* BrokenBase: Scrat's scenes. While most agree his scenes are enjoyable, whether or not his scenes are the ''only'' [[JustHereForGodzilla enjoyable]] elements of these movies has been debated. Some feel his scenes are really the only worthwhile scenes, as they find the other characters [[FlatCharacter boring]], while others think both his scenes and the scenes with the herd are equally enjoyable, even in the sequels.
* CargoShip: Scrat and his acorn. Also, Buck and his pineapple "wife".
* ContestedSequel: All of them, especially the third. Some consider it an absolute disaster, others call it the best of the trilogy. The sequels are contested especially by those who can see past [=Fox=]'s intentions of trying to create a CashCowFranchise to match Creator/DreamWorksAnimation's ''Franchise/{{Shrek}}''. ''Continental Drift'' is seen as forgivable with some, if only because of [[EnsembleDarkhorse Wanda Sykes as Sid's granny]] and a fun villain. You will be hard pressed to find anyone defending ''[[{{Sequelitis}} Collision Course]]'' though. ''Meltdown'' is arguably the least contested, with many are off put by its lighter tone while others find it is serious enough and was the movie that continued the story the most naturally.

** Manny is either a compelling StoicWoobie Protagonist that has very a justificable FreudianExcuse or a Jerkass that constantly treats the people around him besides Ellie poorly and kickstarts the conflicts of the movies out of constantly holding the JerkassBall (The third movie and the ChristmasSpecial plot for example were kickstarted by Manny getting pity with Diego and Sid respectively). [[{{Flanderization}} His characterization from the third movie and onwards only make it a bigger example of this trope]] by turning him into a [[HelicopterParents Helicopter Parent]], with some fans seen it as new ground to explore with the character and others thinking he has become a caricature of his former self and feel his overprotectiveness of Peaches removed most of the things that make him likable in the first place, specially in ''[[YMMV/IceAgeCollisionCourse the fifth movie]]'' where he tries to sabotage Peaches's wedding.
** Dinosaurs. Many dislike their addition feeling it breaked the original setting of the series and [[SeasonalRot feel they were only added out of the creators running out of ideas with what to do with the Ice Age setting]], others howewer feel like they work in the context of being the biggest challenge towards The Herd, specially if the third movie was meant to be the ending before the franchise felt into FranchiseZombie territory. Other fans simply welcome the addition of dinosaurs merely for RuleOfCool.

** Buck was basically CrazyIsCool impersonated back in his first appearence in ''Dawn of the Dinosaurs'' being able to fight much bigger and dangerous dinosaurs and face any threat in the Lost World easily. Once he returned to the series in ''Collison Course'' he didn't do anything as awesome as what he did back in his first appearence besides maybe his introduction scene with him singing Figaro while outwitting the dinobirds to save a egg and spended most of the movie being a glorified exposition-spewer. His appearence in the spin-off has him struggling to face the IneffectualSympatheticVillain's Orson and ends up being easily captured by him once he gets control of the raptors. To make matters worse, he's saved by ''[[TheLoad Crash and]] [[TheScrappy Eddie]]'' out of all the possible characters.

* BadassDecay:
** Diego became less threatening as the films grew LighterAndSofter. In the original movie, he was a fearsome predator who went toe to toe with the leader of his pack. In ''The Meltdown'', he is much less effective due to being given a crippling fear of water. By ''Dawn of the Dinosaurs'', he has become so unfit that his own prey treats him as a complete joke. In this movie however this is a InvokedTrope and he does recover some of his badassery by the end of the movie by defeating a herd of Guanlongs that were targeting Ellie while she was in labour......only for him to fall victim of TheWorfEffect in ''Continental Drift'' once Captain Gutt and his pirate crew appear and then got DemotedToExtra in the two following movies.

* UnpopularPopularCharacter : Sid was abandoned by his own family for how obnoxious they find him to be, all the kids he's supposed to take care of see him as a joke, he's a CasanovaWannabe that no one wants to be around among members of his species (and that's not including the tribe of Mini Sloths that tried to sacrifice him) and the few interactions he has with animals that aren't part of the Herd imply they aren't happy to have him around as well. Only the Herd and his Dinosaur family are fond of him, and even among those groups, he's TheFriendNobodyLikes. Among audiences, however, Sid is one of the most popular characters and is seen as the second-funniest character of the series after Scrat.

* DracoInLeatherPants: Some fans like to over-romanticize Soto as this. One person to such an extent that the Sub-Zero Heroes become {{Ron The Death Eater}}s, Diego especially, because of the whole "brother with Soto" fanon.

* EveryoneIsJesusInPurgatory: Much fandom ink has been spilled about the scene in the first movie where Diego experiences a HeelRealization after Manny almost dies saving Diego from a literal [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything plunge into the fiery pit.]]

** A lot of fans like to think that Diego and Soto are brothers. It leads to a CainAndAbel motif in the first movie if you subscribe to this fan theory, thus making it even MORE DarkerAndEdgier for the first installment. Then again, [[WesternAnimation/TheLionKing1994 it's not like this is the only animated film that involves a villainous big cat plotting to kill his brother.]]
** Soto being NotQuiteDead pops up somewhat commonly in fanfiction.

** The implication that Runar's tribe killed Manny's family. It's never truly established as being this in the film, but fan reading of canon often goes with this conclusion.
** The implication that [[ThoseTwoGuys the two rhinos]] at the beginning of the first film are a gay couple. Blue Sky has given no official confirmation for this, but most fans (casual and hardcore) tend to read them as a couple, but it's still fanon. And oddly enough the world of ''Ice Age'' fanfic ignores them as well, when the fanfiction realm is well-known for its love of slash pairings. Make of that what you will.

* FauxSymbolism: Manny rescuing Diego from the fiery flames of the lava. Not to mention that Roshan's role in the film is a "Peace Child" between the humans and the animals, and it's his innocence that helps redeem Diego, helps Sid find a new family, and gives Manny closure after his family's death, and reconciliation with the people who destroyed his life. It's one aspect of the Original movie - that is, Roshan's importance - that is often glossed over, but ''he'' changed all of the characters taking care of him because of his love and innocence, was central to character and plot resolutions and by the end Manny, Diego and Sid are a [[FamilyOfChoice herd]] because of ''Roshan'' bringing them together as true friends.

* FranchiseOriginalSin: The first film contained a decent amount of ToiletHumor (Sid stepping in the glyptodont poop), adult humor (Sid saying that a girlfriend would "go all praying mantis" on him, amongst other things), and modern references (During the montage, a glacier was seen acting like a passing bus). However, this was underplayed compared to the sequels (In the case of the modern reference, it was just there for a quick joke), and the first film still had enough heart to make up for all of it. And furthermore, all the major characters had a purpose to their presence and genuinely contributed to the narrative, whereas several characters (both old and new alike) in the sequels would end up coming across at times as having no real reason to be there at best and [[DemotedToComicRelief reduced to pointless or annoying comic relief]] at worst.
* FridgeHorror: Manny's introduction. Why was he walking the opposite direction of the other animals migrating away from the freeze? [[spoiler:It's because he felt life wasn't worth living anymore after the deaths of his original family, and was ready to commit suicide by freezing to death]].
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: The first four ''Ice Age'' films have had decent box office runs in North America, but, at least in the case of the sequels, were overshadowed by the films from Creator/{{Pixar}} and Creator/DreamworksAnimation. * GenreTurningPoint: The first film was the first major CGI movie that wasn't made either by Creator/{{Pixar}} or Creator/DreamWorksAnimation to do well at the box office, being a Creator/BlueSkyStudios production (even if Pixar's owner Creator/{{Disney}} later bought the rights when they bought Blue Sky's owner 20th Century Fox in 2019). As such, it proved that CGI movies were no longer just a minor novelty from two competing companies and helped make CGI films into a big figure in the mainstream box office.
* HarsherInHindsight:
** While saying goodbye to Roshan, Manny tells him that they'll never forget him. This becomes blissfully ironic as Roshan is [[LongBusTrip completely forgotten about]] in the sequels. The best we got was a cameo in the beginning of ''Adventures of Buck Wild'' during Ellie's recap of the first 5 movies.
** Diego's line "''can't have one of your own, so you want to adopt''", while only meant at the time as [[DeadpanSnarker snark]], becomes much harsher after the reveal that Manny's [[spoiler:mate and child were killed by humans]].
** Before the heroes enter the ice cave in the first film, Sid is joking around by pretending to be impaled in the neck with an icicle. [[spoiler:How does Soto die again?]]
* HeartwarmingInHindsight:
** Manny's loneliness wouldn't last long. [[spoiler: In the sequel, Manny finds another mate in Ellie, and in 3, he has a daughter named Peaches. The main difference is that unlike his first family, Manny actually kept this new family alive long enough to see his daughter become a fully grown mammoth before setting off to find a family of her on.]]
** Roshan's aforementioned cameo in ''Adventures of Buck Wild''. While brief, it shows that despite everything and despite all the years having gone by, the Sub-Zero Heroes truly never forgot him if Ellie was able to hear about him during her opening monologue.
* SugarWiki/HeReallyCanAct:
** Ray Romano manages to pull off a genuinely heartfelt performance as Manny.
** Creator/DenisLeary as [[TheComicallySerious Diego]]; while many of his previous acting performances were mostly well received, he tended to play the same [[Film/DemolitionMan aggressive, hyperactive jerk in almost every movie]]. Here he plays a more calm, collected if still [[PlayingWithCharacterType macho and insecure]] character and actually pulls it off. Plus he also did well [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhTYNeccZuE in the more dramatic scenes]].
** We also have Creator/JackBlack in an early voice role, being almost completely unrecognizable as Zeke. Since ''Ice Age'', he's gone on to prove his skills as a voice actor in other animated films like ''WesternAnimation/SharkTale'' and especially the ''WesternAnimation/KungFuPanda'' series.

** The first movie had a ''T. rex'' frozen in ice as a gag. In ''Dawn of the Dinosaurs'', the heroes find a lost world of surviving dinosaurs below ground. It led to fan speculation that the "meltdown" in the second movie actually freed the dinosaurs in the third movie.
** The first movie also had a UFO frozen in ice as a random sight gag, but fast forward to the premise of the fifth movie...
** During the scene with the cave paintings, Sid comments that you never see any sloths in them. In 2020, rock art was discovered in Columbia depicted what many have interpreted as a ground sloth.

* JerkassWoobie:
** Manny in the first one, when we find out [[spoiler:what happens to his family]].
** Diego, when he can't decide whether to betray his pack or his new friends.

* LikeYouWouldReallyDoIt: There’s no reason to believe that Manny, the protagonist of the movie, would actually fall to his death in the lava pit in the original, especially if you already know about his presence in the sequels.
* MemeticLoser: Roshan, better known these days as the "Ice Age Baby", has become jokingly loathed by memers since early 2020 as they often portray him getting brutally tortured or killed.

%%*** “¡Tarado lo asustas!”[[note]]From when Diego accidentally [[NightmareFace scares]] Roshan and Manny stops him.[[/note]]
%%*** “Puaj, ¡ya se echó a perder!”[[note]]From when Sid successfully fakes death to Carl and Frank, the former of whom says said line; usually used to express TheyChangedItNowItSucks[[/note]]
%%* MisaimedFandom: Soto.
* MoralEventHorizon: If wanting to [[RevengeByProxy eat Roshan alive]] and [[BadBoss threatening to kill his henchmen]] wasn't bad enough, Soto certainly crosses it once he attempts to kill Diego after the latter's HeelFaceTurn.

* RetroactiveRecognition:
** Zeke is voiced by Creator/JackBlack, who would later be the main character in [[WesternAnimation/KungFuPanda his own]] Creator/DreamworksAnimation film series, the third of which came out the same year as the last film of this series.
** Lenny and Dab the dodo are both voiced by future Disney good luck charm Creator/AlanTudyk. He also voices characters in ''The Meltdown'' and ''Continental Drift'' (the latter of which came out the same year as the first Disney animated movie to feature him, ''WesternAnimation/WreckItRalph'').
* SavedByTheFans: Scrat was originally going to be killed off after his brief scene in the opening of the first movie, but the overwhelming response to advance footage led the filmmakers to add more scenes with him, and he continued to appear throughout the franchise, becoming not only the de-facto mascot of the series, but of Creator/BlueSkyStudios as well.

* SignatureScene: The "Send Me on My Way" [[TravelMontage Migration Montage]] that has Manny, Sid, and Diego traveling towards Glacier Pass basically sums up what the ''Ice Age'' films are all about. The herd occasionally playing charades while heading to where they decided to go, with Scrat during this sequence is also quite memorable.

** You can't think of the first movie without "Send Me On My Way".

* TheyCopiedItSoItSucks: Most of the first film’s criticism focuses on that it’s pretty similar to ''WesternAnimation/{{Shrek}}'' and ''WesternAnimation/MonstersInc'', the former for Manny and Sid respectively recalling Shrek and Donkey as both being pairs of a giant grumpy but good hearted beast pestered by an unwanted companion and the latter for its baby returning plot.

* UglyCute: The baby has been mocked by some people for his odd appearance, yet he still behaves no differently than any other baby and has some wholesome moments with the main cast.

Overprotective Dad has been disambiguated.

* BaseBreakingCharacter: Manny in the first one. Most people liked him in the first one while some thought he was [[{{Jerkass}} too much of a jerk]]. However, as he's softened, he's not exactly become a hated character, but he's been complained about for being boring and being too much of an OverprotectiveDad.

people. ''The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild'', for some unknown reason, decided to make them the de facto main characters and shunt the main characters people actually like to background extras (or, in Scrat's case, are absent entirely), making the film very tough to sit through for many.
