* BetterThanCanon: As it gives [[ActionGirl Kairi]] a major role, removes the convolution caused by Xehanort's time-traveling, and integrates the Disney characters in more major battles (the battle for Hollow Bastion in [=KH1=], the Battle of 1000 Heartless in [=KH2=]), many fans consider this series as such.
** The series also fixes the DarkIsNotEvil Aesop, which is extremely [[BrokenAesop broken]] in the games. In the games, pretty much all problems were caused by darkness, examples of pure light (the Princesses of Heart, Ventus) are purely good and the closest examples of LightIsNotGood are Eraqus, whose BlackAndWhiteMorality was justified multiple times, and the Master of Masters, who is so [[AmbiguouslyEvil ambiguous]] no one can say where his allegiances lie. Here, light does cause problems, courtesy of Xemnas, who is a heart of pure light, and the games' examples of hearts of pure light now also have darkness in their hearts, to emphasize better that light and darkness are a balance that must be kept at all times, and evil is caused by upsetting the balance in favor of either light or darkness (as I said before, Xemnas is a heart of pure light, and he's just as bad, if not [[AdaptationalVillainy worse]] than in the games). In fact, the problems caused by the Heartless can be pinned on the light, since the Heartless are merely trying to fight back against the tyranny of light that oppressed and tortured them.
** Xehanort was also fixed a lot; a lot of FranchiseOriginalSin were tied to it.
*** First, the reveal that his dark side, Ansem, is the first game's BigBad is actually foreshadowed him, with him replacing Maleficent in some scenes, including the one introducing the Disney Villain Council.
*** Second, in Crypto's series, there's no character really named "Ansem". Dark Seeker Ansem was a false identity made by Xehanort, and Ansem the Wise underwent AdaptationNameChange, now being named Gnosis.
*** Third, [[AdaptationalWimp he is unable to time travel in Crypto's series]], and Young Xehanort was turned into a LivingMemory.
*** Finally, what outraged nearly everyone is that Xehanort was retconned in the last minute of his life into a WellIntentionedExtremist and got no comeuppance to his atrocities, including [[spoiler: killing Kairi right before the retcon]]. In Crypto's series, only Ansem and Xemnas needed comeuppance, comeuppance which they get, and Xehanort himself is a WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds FallenHero.

* AuthorsSavingThrow: In games from [=KH1=] to Birth By Sleep, Xehanort appears as UnintentionallyUnsympathetic due to everyone he's hurt. Dream Drop Distance fixes this by having Sora's story have a big focus on Xehanort's past, explianing that Ansem and Xemnas's actions were beyond Xehanort's control, and having Xehanort understand what he's doing is wrong, even if [[IDidWhatIHadToDo he sees it necessary]].

** It's all but outright stated that Namine is an AnthropomorphicPersonification of Kairi's repressed feelings for Riku. After all, she's "Kairi's shadow" when Riku uses the darkness, and a ShrinkingViolet because she's, well, repressed. The horror kicks in when you realize Kairi was unwittingly a BigSisterBully towards Namine (since plenty of fanworks, especially in recent days, portray Kairi and Namine as sisters). And that's on top of Marluxia's actions in Chain of Memories. [[TheWoobie Poor Namine]]...

** Similarly, Xehanort is hated for how his claim as he's dying that he's a WellIntentionedExtremist is nullified by all his crimes, yet everyone believes it. Cryptonix02 made Xehanort actually feel guilty for the crimes Ansem and Xemnas committed, and tells Sora that he should hate him for them, though it's likely he was influenced by Terra. As for his claim to be a WellIntentionedExtremist, it was changed to fit the Balance between Light and Darkness Aesop more, as well as being turned into a CassandraTruth. And because of Xehanort holding onto this truth with no one save Braig and Isa believing him, he became a WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds FallenHero.

** Cryptonyx stated right off the bat that he intens on [[AdaptedOut removing]] the world of fiction. This, combined with Kairi's AdaptationalBadass and Marluxia's and Larxene's AdaptationalHeroism, means the following: Kairi won't get kidnapped and StuffedInTheFridge in KH3, Sora won't have to [[HeroicSacrifice erase himself from existente to save her]], and the two [[EarnYourHappyEnding will get their happy ending]].
* FridgeHorror: Well, not exactly, since it affects Maleficent, who deserved it, but it still counts, since it involves death. Maleficent only survived being slain in Kingdom Hearts 1 by time travelling to the age of fairytales; however, no time travel means Maleficent was KilledOffForReal!

** A lot of fans hate Kairi's portrayal from the games (an useless DamselInDistress [[SatelliteLoveInterest who only exists to be Sora's girlfriend]]), and prefer Cryptonix's take on her, where she's a [[AdaptationalBadass much more competent fighter]] and has a clearer direction in her character arc.[[note]]This portrayal is actually used extremely often in fanfics, especially Sokai fanfics.[[/note]]
** Terra also receives this. While he's more of a BaseBreakingCharacter instead of TheScrappy, he does have plenty of detractors, who believe Terra always trusts ObviouslyEvil people. In Cryptonix's videos, Terra never seems to trust Disney Villains. As for Xehanort, Terra's doubts are made more explicit, which makes Xehanort's exploitation of them more ''undestandable''.
* TheWoobie: Kairi. Yes, even here. She loses her old home to darkness at a young age, but she manages to meet her two best friends, so it's not a total loss, right? Except that world is thrust into darkness thanks to one of them and her heart is separated from her body and protected by the other, who performs a HeroicSacrifice to restore her, which she bares witness to. Sora comes back, but then they're separated yet ''again''. Later on, she decides to look for Sora, gaining a Keyblade in the process. She finds him, as well as her grandfather, but [[YankTheDogsChain she's separated from the latter right afterwards]]. On the plus side, she wasn't kidnapped, Namine didn't give up her existence to be a part of Kairi, and it's implied that Kairi's training will pay off, unlike in the games... right? At this point, though, Kairi being TheWoobie is the only way to portray her.

The words are "One can banish the heart from the body, but the body will try to replace it the first chance it gets, for as many times as it takes." The AdaptationalBackstoryChange explain how the game version of the Nobodies can regrow hearts: it's not necessarily that they regrow it, but their bodies become able to do a heart's functions (like emoting) itself, without a heart, and Roxas and Namine just figured out how earlier than the others.
