I think those tropes are a bit controversial anyway.

* CharacterDerailment: Barney was never a good guy, but he at least was your typical anti-hero who generally tries to have some standards. What he does to Jumbo Shrimp is most definitely being viewed as a full on derailment of his character since he lost the ring fair and square, but seemed to feel like he deserved to get revenge by killing Jumbo Shrimp. Even in a setting that is all about grey area, it paints him in an incredibly unfavorable light.

* VanityProject: The movie bombed for several reasons--Stallone being a glorified extra, most of the Expendables from previous movies not returning, the ludicrous plot with a CaptainObviousReveal, bad writing, forgettable stunts, and of course, COVID and the 2023 Writer's and Actor's strike (which means the movie couldn't be promoted by its writers or actors until the strike ended in the fall)--but one of the biggest reasons is that the general public had gotten tired of the Expendables by about the third film (proven by it being the lowest grossing film in the franchise before this one), so pushing to make this one when the nostalgia and novelty already wore off makes this film come across as nothing more than a vanity project. It gives off the air that Stallone and the others just insisted on making another one when the audience's interest simply wasn't there, and given the movie's terrible box office and savage reviews, it's very likely this truly was a vanity project.

Being delayed by COVID should also be a major factor as to why the movie took so long to get made.

** Suarto Rahmat is a cheerfully sadistic ArmsDealer who has been hired for Ocelot's plan for global catastrophe. Raiding a Libyan general's compound to acquire a nuclear bomb, Rahmat has all the guards within slaughtered. After killing the General's wife, Rahmat holds his young son as a bargaining chip for the nuke, casually killing him when the general complies anyway. Having the nuke placed onto his ship, Rahmat has his boat travel to Russia to detonate it and trigger WorldWarIII.

I clearly saw Christmas stab Rahmat in the chest with a tomahawk, then kicked it even further to avenge Barney. There's no way he could be coming back from that.
