And his family has made it clear they will ''never'' forgive him for what he did.]]

** Many fans complained about Gabe's seeming uselessness in situations and him losing a lot of battles. "The Princess Knight" established him as a master strategist and tactician and ended up being an effective mentor to Elena, even spilling strategies that could help her win individual battles. Also, after Elena helps him develop his own moves instead of badly mimicking his father's, he becomes quite the awesome "Olaball" player. Additionally, his CharacterDevelopment is him trying to be Elena's protector to him realizing that she doesn't need protecting and instead needs people like him to trust her and assist her in leading more effectively.

* HarsherInHindsight:
** Both this show and ''WesternAnimation/{{Coco}}'' are Disney tales about Latin American cultures, with an emphasis on music and family over multiple generations. And in both, one of the heroes, partially by ToxicFriendInfluence, is convinced to do something selfish that negatively affects their family and results in him losing his family. He come to regret it, but is forced to live with their guilt and impact of their actions for the next several decades (to the point that he is close to dying of old age/being forgotten) while being held in less value than the BigBad [[VillainWithGoodPublicity with Good Publicity]]. But the main character's arrival thanks to supernatural/magical causes ends up saving him and sealing old wounds. Are we talking about Esteban or [[spoiler:Hector]]?
** "The Magic Within" having [[spoiler:Esteban having a FaceHeelTurn in relation to his self-destructive tendencies while Carla seems to have a HeelFaceTurn or at least a HeelRealization because her father has been TakenForGranite also happens around the same time ''WesternAnimation/TangledTheSeries'' has Cassandra have a FaceHeelTurn for {{foil}}-y reasons in comparison to Esteban, while Varian, who had a FaceHeelTurn in Carla's circumstance, is redeemed and has a HeelFaceTurn.]]
*** Then we later have [[spoiler:Esteban following Varian's path in [[ThenLetMeBeEvil accepting that he must become evil because that's all he has left as Varian himself explained in his own return]], and unlike Rapunzel, Elena refuses to forgive him because whereas Varian ultimately never hurt anyone, Esteban hurt ''everyone.'']]
*** What's more, both of the series' [[GrandFinale Grand Finales]] have many of the BackForTheFinale characters rising up against the ultimate evil, as well as [[spoiler:the ally-turned-villain (Esteban, Cassandra) being [[ILied double-crossed and overthrown]] by said ultimate evil, after which they [[HeelFaceTurn turn back to the good side]] and help the main princess defeat the evil. However, while Elena refused to forgive Esteban and believed [[BeyondRedemption there's nothing he can do to make up for what he did]] prior to this, Rapunzel [[LoveMartyr continually insisted Cassandra was still a good person and never gave up on her]]. Heck, both Esteban and Cassandra had a song about how they had [[IveComeTooFar nothing left to lose]]. But while Cassandra had absolutely ''no'' problem embracing evil and only redeemed herself ''after'' Zhan Tiri deprived her of her power, thus she only became "good" again [[NominalHero because something bad happened to her personally]], ''not'' because of a moral dilemma, Esteban remained protective of Elena and their family from start to finish and (like Varian wanted to do, but for Corona) made the conscious choice to pull a HeroicSacrifice to save his cousin. They also both get brought back from their brief demises.]]
** Both Season 3's of this and ''WesternAnimation/SheRaAndThePrincessesOfPower'' have Creator/AimeeCarrero's character (Elena and Adora) [[spoiler:decide that their loved one (Esteban, Catra) has gone BeyondRedemption and [[ThisIsUnforgivable can't find it in their hearts to forgive them for their abhorrent crimes]], and vent in a dramatic and intense scene (or at least in AllThereInTheManual for ''She-Ra'', anyways) about it towards this person while this person decides to ThenLetMeBeEvil. Elena/Adora do also establish that they do love this person, but [[LoveHurts that’s what made said person’s actions hurt even more]]. The only difference is that Esteban still holds back after that, but Catra does not. In fact, the fourth season of ''She-Ra'' would come out two weeks after the above event of this series happened, making it a double-whammy to see both of Aimee Carrero's characters go through this kind of fallout at the same time. And not unlike what happened to Esteban, Catra also has to be told straight to her face that [[HisOwnWorstEnemy the blame falls on no one except for herself for getting herself in this position]], and also [[DirtyCoward throws in a with a more dangerous foe out of fear for her own life]]. There even came point where both Esteban and Catra do get the power they wanted because they believe they will finally be seen and heard, even remarking about how they thought having power would be different, but it isn't. Towards the end of their respective series, both characters [[HeelRealization have awakened]] to the AwfulTruth that they've lost their loved ones and all they've done is hurt everyone. Both Catra and Esteban make the conscious decision to "do one good thing" in their lives and pull a HeroicSacrifice, with their final words to Aimee Carrero's character being "I'm sorry (for everything)" before the deed is complete, which does lead to (though instantaneous in Esteban's case) them temporarily dying. Elena/Adora even gains a [[GoldAndWhiteAreDivine gold and white motif]] after seeing Esteban/Catra die, and uses her new power to ressurect her loved one. Sure enough, Adora does eventually forgive Catra, and so does Elena for Esteban. But while Catra still had to earn Adora's forgiveness after being saved, Elena forgave Esteban much more quickly]].

** Like [[WesternAnimation/Frozen2013 Elsa]] and WesternAnimation/{{Sofia|TheFirst}} before her, Elena has no love interest and the show greatly emphasizes the aspect of family. This is likewise shared with the rest of the cast barring older couples that would reasonably be parents. Perhaps the only romantic aspect in the show is that Gabe is said to have a BodyguardCrush on her according to AllThereInTheManual, but it isn't a primary focus of his character either, and this will likely be dropped due to his ShipTease with Naomi, which is at least kept minimal.

** Esteban gets this with Catra from ''WesternAnimation/SheRaAndThePrincessesOfPower'' due to both of them being a loved one of Aimee Carrero's character and who growing up felt the latter made them feel like invisible outcasts who only wanted others to hear them. * LGBTFanbase: This show garnered such with Elena’s and Naomi’s interactions seeming to be subtextually more intimate beyond friends to the point that it became popular to headcanon both of them as bisexual (since both of them did show some noticeable attraction to male characters). Of course, Aimee Carrero has a sizable LGBT fan base of her own due to her playing Adora in ''WesternAnimation/SheRaAndThePrincessesOfPower'', [[spoiler:who entered into a romantic relationship with her best friend Catra at the series’ conclusion]].

* CrossoverShip: Isabel and James from ''WesternAnimation/SofiaTheFirst'' seems to be gaining popularity. [[spoiler:The two dancing at the end of "Coronation Day" added to this.]]

Cut to the episode "Wizard In Training" for this series, which also has Spanish influence, where Olivia's older brother is voiced by Emil while Grey voices their ''mother''. In essence, it's a similar dynamic aged slightly down.
** There's been a good amount of fanfiction that depicts [[WesternAnimation/BeautyAndTheBeast Belle]] as a captain. Cut to the episode "Captain Turner Returns", in which Creator/JulieNathanson, Belle's current voice actress, voices Naomi's mother, ''Captain'' Scarlett Turner.
** Eden Espinosa, the voice of Orizaba, was the actress of [[Theatre/{{Wicked}} Elphaba]], who had been compared to Idina Menzel's role of [[WesternAnimation/{{Frozen}} Elsa]] due to Eden being Idina's TheOtherDarrin as well as the similarities between Elphaba and Elsa. ** ''WesternAnimation/SofiaTheFirst'' is [[BigInJapan popular in Spain]], where it just so happens that they have a queen named Sofia. Her eldest daughter's name? Elena. And part of Elena's extended name is Isabel.
** Creator/LinManuelMiranda being in the talks for a Disney animated movie about a Latin American princess (which later became ''Encanto'') became this with how often Elena seems to be associated with WesternAnimation/{{Moana}} among the Disney Princess merchandise fandom.
** Considering at least two songs in the show are inspired by ''Theatre/{{Hamilton}}'' as well as having a couple of ''Hamilton'' alumni as guest stars, this is also hilarious in hindsight for Lin-Manuel Miranda being in the talks of creating a Latina Disney Princess movie (later known to be for ''Encanto'').

** Complaints that Elena wasn't included in the Disney Princess scenes in ''WesternAnimation/RalphBreaksTheInternet'' soon turned the tables when ''Wreck-It Ralph'' fans were quick to jump at ''Elena of Avalor'''s claim of having the first Jewish Disney Princess, an honor that technically belonged to Vanellope first.

[[spoiler:While she has every right to be angry at Esteban over his alliance with Shuriki, she actively tries to hurt Esteban on sight (despite him never even thinking of returning the favor), and prioritizes capturing him over Ash, the dangerous malvago who almost ''killed her'' in their first encounter. Even after "Dia de las Madres", where she realised Esteban had more reason than she thought to believe he was unloved, she dismisses Francisco's reminder that Esteban helped her take back Avalor and fully believes he couldn't care less about her safety. There are still a good number of people who defend her, though, pointing out that Elena has little-to-no reason to trust Esteban at all after finding out that, [[UngratefulBastard despite how welcoming the family was of him]], he betrayed everyone, including his own family, in Avalor to Shuriki, was unintentionally responsible for her parents' deaths, lied to her about it, and refused to take his punishment with dignity; what's more, it's understandable she'd be locked into the past considering all the traumatic events that have happened to her, which isn't even getting into how the ''entire point'' of her Season 3 arc is to let go of the last and focus on the future.]]

** Dona Paloma. A recurring character, her deeds include almost ruining Navidad for her own profits, sabotaging Julio's Feast of Friendship, trying to take over Gabe and Naomi's Carnival float by making it [[ItsAllAboutMe all about her]] (ditching the group when they refuse to do so), and [[spoiler:walking out on the Grand Council's discussion of how to defend Avalor from the Four Shades of Awesome so she can focus on her own Emporium instead]]; though they do make her deeply unlikeable in the eyes of some, there are others who still appreciate her for her FreudianExcuse, HiddenDepths, and CharacterDevelopment, particularly in later episodes of the third season.

* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Elena in season 3. [[spoiler:While she has every right to be angry at Esteban over his alliance with Shuriki, that anger ends up coloring her judgment for most of the season; the mere mention or reminder of him drives her into a rage (with Isabelle hiding a picture of Esteban out of concern that it might set her off), she active tries to hurt Esteban on sight (despite him never even thinking of returning the favor), and prioritizes capturing him over Ash, the dangerous malvago who almost ''killed her'' in their first encounter. Even after "Dia de las Madres", where she realised Esteban had more reason than she thought to believe he was unloved, she has nothing but scorn for him, dismissing Francisco pointing out that she only won back Avalor from Shuriki because of Esteban. Her obsession with punishing Esteban even allows Ash to unleash the Four Shades of Awesome upon Avalor, threatening the very kingdom she swore to protect.]]
