* SoOkayItsAverage: As the sister series to ''Anime/TenchiMuyo'' and a TropeCodifier to a lot of [[TrappedInAnotherWorld Isekai Anime]], ''El-Hazard'' can receive this kind of reaction from a lot of anime fans. It never reached the same heights of popularity as ''Tenchi'' did and compared to a lot of modern ''Isekai'' anime that have done a much better job of world-building nowadays, ''El-Hazard'' can definitely [[OnceOriginalNowCommon come off as being old hat]]. However, even with all of that, it's not considered a bad series in its own right and has a lot of good qualities including a lush soundtrack and entertaining villains like Jinnai to make up for the fact that these days, ''El-Hazard'' wasn't quite as impactful of a HaremAnime that ''Tenchi'' was and may have been surpassed by a lot of modern ''Isekai'' works that took the blueprint ''El-Hazard'' created and improved upon it both in characterization and world-building.

* OnceOriginalNowCommon: By now, there's such an (over) abundance of ''Isekai'' anime that you've probably seen it all at this point. Young male protagonist gets transported to another world? Check. Magical, medieval world that the protagonist has to adapt to? Check. Harem of girls who develop feelings for him and get into all sorts of funny situations with him? Check. Assuming you haven't watched El-Hazard first, then by the time you get to either the OVA or the anime TV show, the series will feel like it's not breaking any new ground or providing anything you haven't already seen dozens of times before. However, El-Hazard does hold the lofty position of being one of the very earliest TrappedInAnotherWorld anime during a time in the 90s. when there weren't a lot of anime in this genre. In a way, El-Hazard is the [[TropeCodifier first draft prototype which pioneered a lot of what you see nowadays in most Isekai anime.]]

* EvilIsSexy: Diva could easily pass for a human were it not for her wings and antennea. Otherwise, she appears to be a beautiful, shapely woman with a tan, which seems [[NotDistractedByTheSexy utterly lost on Jinnai.]]

* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: By now, there's such an (over) abundance of ''Isekai'' anime that you've probably seen it all at this point. Young male protagonist gets transported to another world? Check. Magical, medieval world that the protagonist has to adapt to? Check. Harem of girls who develop feelings for him and get into all sorts of funny situations with him? Check. Assuming you haven't watched El-Hazard first, then by the time you get to either the OVA or the anime TV show, the series will feel like it's not breaking any new ground or providing anything you haven't already seen dozens of times before. However, El-Hazard does hold the lofty position of being one of the very earliest TrappedInAnotherWorld anime during a time in the 90s when there weren't a whole lot of anime dedicated to this kind of genre. It doesn't help that ''The Wanderers'', where Princess Fatora is AdaptedOut, ''highly'' [[ShipTease suggests them as a pairing]] in their final scene.

* BaseBreakingCharacter: Princess Fatora is both loved and hated due of her [[{{Jerkass}} bitchy attitude]]. Some fans find [[LesYay her moments]] with the other female characters funny, while others find it annoying and [[DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnFemale highly]] [[DudeNotFunny uncomfortable.]]

* ShippingGoggles: Some fans tend to regard Nanami's more polite and tolerant attitude toward Alielle's advances (versus Shayla-Shayla's ''firm'' rejection) as evidence of interest on her part.

* IdiotPlot: A ''lot'' in ''El Hazard 2: The Magnificent World''. There are so many moments, you'd swear the cast was playing professional volleyball with the IdiotBall. A few examples: The group believing Katsuhiko's obvious lies despite Nanami's warnings ''(keep in mind that Nanami is his sister, and would know him better than everyone else)'', Makoto still trying to negotiate with the ObviouslyEvil Kalia despite her trying to kill him mere seconds ago, the Muldoon Priestesses combining their attacks into one projectile against a character who ''reflects'' projectiles, and so on.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Nahato didn't appears in the sequels despite the fact that he could make a good BigBad.

* WhatAnIdiot: Nanami, in both the OVA continuity and ''The Wanderers'' [[AlternateUniverse AU series]].
** In the OVA, Nanami knew Makoto had a crush on her and had ''years'' worth of opportunity to be with him, had she simply admitted that she liked him too. Instead, she [[HeIsNotMyBoyfriend stubbornly denies having feelings for him]] whenever anyone asks and ultimately loses him to Ifurita.
*** It's the same in ''The Wanderers'' series except, this time, she loses him to Princess Rune. All because she's to stubborn to admit how she feels about him.
** In the TV Series, Nanami managed to become friends with the Bugrom and even with Queen Diva. So they will stop being evil, right? Well, that would be happening if Nanami didn't ''crush'' in front them a baby Bugrom, thinking this was just a normal insect. (But don't worry, it recovered quickly.) Thus, the Bugrom locked her up and stayed evil, and that was exactly as Jinnai planned!

You'll be [[LaughablyEvil too busy laughing at the things he says and does]], and [[MagnificentBastard applauding]] when he [[BatmanGambit out gambits]] Makoto, all while waiting for him to get his [[LaserGuidedKarma just desserts]]. It's no wonder he's such a popular villain.

Granted, his JerkAss nature still means he brings it on himself, but in some ways this makes his situation somewhat more understandable.
