* BrokenBase: While the special is still held in high regards, there has been some pushback of it being ''DBZ''[='=]s best special, as there is a few glaring {{Plot Hole}}s that have to be ignored in order for the plot to work. Specifically, King Kai's complete absence and why none of the Z-Fighters are attempting to contact the living from Otherworld, or using their position in Otherworld to find out where New Namek is.

Even the Abridged version plays it 100% straight with no jokes as well as an epic scream. It's even included in the page image for TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening.

* EvilIsSexy: The Androids, particularly 18. There are some fans who find their more callous attitudes to be more attractive than their mainline counterparts.

** The Japanese credits music "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z00VOo6kdKM Aoi Kaze No Hope]]" is a triumphant end to the special and really instills the hope that Trunks will right the wrongs of the Androids once he returns.

** The AB Group dub. Like all of the "Big Green" movies, this one is absolutely ''loaded'' with narmful moments.

*** The narrator describing the Z-Fighters' fight with the Androids at the beginning got the details so blatantly wrong it ends up being hilarious.

** The dub has some of this going on, largely due to the lack of swearing in lines that really sort of called for it. For example, Bulma's response to hearing about how the androids have destroyed another city is:

** In the English dub, Krillin's death is described as "[[LargeHam EVEN KRILLIN WAS DESTROYED BY THE RUTHLESS DUO!]]" Considering his status as a ButtMonkey, many have a hard time believing that such a description is warranted.

** Prior to that, it's left to the viewer's interpretation if this is the "latter" version of the future timeline (where Trunks returns with the power to destroy the androids) or the "former" version where he defeats the androids [[SuddenDownerEnding only to be killed by Cell.]]

** Krillin's death, especially with Dale Kelly's voice, is described as "[[LargeHam EVEN KRILLIN WAS DESTROYED BY THE RUTHLESS DUO!]]" Considering his status as a ButtMonkey, many have a hard time believing that such a description is warranted.

* HarsherInHindsight:
** While the special is depressing enough, it ends on a note of hope since we know that Trunks will return stronger than ever from the past, kill the androids, and restore peace. However, [[HappyEndingOverride this message is undermined]] by ''Anime/DragonBallSuper'' with the introduction of [[spoiler:Goku Black]], who wrecks future Earth again. Not only that, things become far worse as the saga goes on. [[spoiler:Trunks slices Merged Zamasu, only for him to become an EldritchAbomination of multiversal proportions to the point of ending humanity with only Trunks and Mai left. Goku has to [[GodzillaThreshold resort]] to summoning Future Zeno, [[DownerEnding who wipes out the]] ''[[DownerEnding multiverse]]'' to put a stop to Zamasu]]. Needless to say, everything Trunks did to preserve his timeline is AllForNothing.
** In Latin America, [[spoiler:Gohan's death becomes ''infinitely'' harder to watch after his longtime voice actor, Creator/LuisAlfonsoMendoza, was murdered in February 2020. Many tributes have even alluded said scene]].

* BetterThanCanon: Many feel that the TV special's somewhat different retelling of the story is much better overall than the original manga chapter it's based on. ''Super'' seems to agree as it shows the events of this special instead of what was in the original manga in the Future Trunks Saga.
