* AssPull: You know that [[LivingProp nondescript officer lady]] that's been hanging around the Councillor? She [[spoiler:killed Do Mon]] and [[spoiler:and is actually Black Moura, the BigBad that wasn't even foreshadowed before the halfway point of the series]].

* {{Wangst}}: Gus in episodes 8 and 9.The flashbacks of Sogo's angry outbursts are well justified, ie, he's at most 10 years old, has ''just'' had his mother murdered, is in the "anger" phase of his grief, and is forced to live with his mother's bodyguard ''who failed to protect her'' and whom he instinctively does not like or trust. Gus, on the other hand, is not only a fully grown man, but he's a hardened war veteran. Him crying out "How dare you retire and leave me all alone?!" is truly out of place. Especially as Do Mon retired years before the current story line.

This apparently translates to Otto using their car to ram Sougo and Kaon's HoverBoard against ''the metal railing protecting them from a fifty-foot drop.'' This goes about as well as you would expect.
** Felia, who seemingly has the mental maturity of a 5-year-old, is left alone in Sougo's home/restaurant by the owner, after Moura seals her powers. Now while Sougo leaving her there is explained by the fact that he's required to go to school, and she can't go (Sougo only being informed about classes being cancelled ''after'' Sougo is caught in a downpour on the way there), Do Mon has no such excuse. Especially seeing as Felia is an exceptionally well-behaved child, and Do Mon could simply have taken her with him.
** Felia is the "Lima" whose fate the empire, if not the whole planet of Gift is dependent upon. The Imperial "wise sages" want to acquire and control her, presumably to guarantee the prosperity of their country. Who do they send to do the job? [[TheAlcoholic Gus,]] a soldier prone to OrgasmicCombat and booze who seemingly doesn't know which he wants more. When '''he''' realizes he needs a few extra hands to get the job done, who does he recruit? [[StalkerWithACrush Alfried]] and [[EnfanteTerrible Puck]] both of whom traumatize Felia, repeatedly, especially Puck who's been ordered ''repeatedly'' to "be gentle." When Puck sees that Sogo is important to Felia and vice versa, what does he do? He threatens BOTH their lives, and actively attempts to kill Sogo, as opposed to say, use Sogo as an incentive to ensure Felia's cooperation.
** Episode 6 shows the Imperial commanders are even ''worse'' than Gus. In order to get the glory on a mission that's supposed to be on the QT, they mobilize a rather large military operation on a civilian city, during a ''wedding ceremony.'' What's worse is that at least one of the soldiers grabs the bride's maid with his mecha and while she's screaming in terror (and possibly pain), he laughs like a completely sadistic loon, and turns his giant Gatling-gun on a relatively unarmed civilian because he's annoyed that she's angry. It shouldn't surprise anyone that the whole city was on the verge of rioting.
** Councilor Krone takes the cake in episode 11. We find out that he's been taking the word of a completely alien entity [[spoiler: that would prove to be ultimately hostile]] at face value for years, and having anyone who even recommends caution meet with "accidents." It would be different if there was some kind of flashback or service shown where [[spoiler: Black Moura]] had earned his trust. There is nothing of the sort. Krone didn't even bother to check if "untold prosperity to the world" meant ''his world'', Gift, as opposed to the alien's home world.

* EarWorm: The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDdOBhjmeN4 opening]] and the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krcTTRobb_c first ending]] song.

* PoorMansSubstitute: One of the reviewers for the preview guide on ANN called the show this compared to Anime/EurekaSeven.
