** The OC, Leonard Kirkham and his platoon are just as vile. During the invasion of Japan, they slaughtered civilians and kidnapped their children to sell into the organ and sex trade. When they were caught, they stuffed them in a container and dumped them into the sea to drown, with Kirkham being smug and unrepentant even when confronted with the children’s corpses. Then he avoids jail due to Britannia racism and class privilege, he immediately plans to start human trafficking again. [[spoiler: Fortunately, they all die in the same chapter they’re introduced.]]

The author deliberately tries to remind readers that Britannia is supposed to be the bad guy. Best seen once the story turns to Area 11, and we see the state of conquered Japan. On one hand, it’s noted the average Japanese is better off economically and in terms of security under Britannia (and than in canon); on the other many people still live in run down ghettos and are subject to brutality and terror from the local policing forces, that have near total carte blanche (though this is implied to be primarily due to neglecting oversight on Clovis’ part). It makes Britannia itself more nuanced as a nation that possesses a more noble ideal as upheld by the main characters, that is simultaneously plagued by the societal problems of classism and racism which have flourished under the current Emperor’s Darwinian philosophy. As such, Britannia’s worst problems in this story could be largely solved with a simple regime change, and some active reforms, as hinted in the introductions.
