* TaintedByThePreview: Some fans got turned off by Mai's new outfit for ''Variable Heart'' and claimed that the Fanservice-ness of the series went one step too far. Though on the whole, Mai's outfit is less revealing than that of Makoto and fits in with those of the other big-breasted characters.

* GrowingTheBeard: It's generally agreed that the manga gets a lot better in the second half, around the time when Mai becomes the Intermediary Grimoire and Sypher is introduced, when the actual plot kicks in and the {{Fanservice}} is toned down.

* BrokenBase: A lot of fans appreciate the lighter atmosphere and a better look into the life of some of the cast before the series started. However, there were people turned off by the {{Fanservice}}, which is more obvious compared to the games.

* LesYay: There are lesbian overtones within the series. In the second chapter [[AmbiguouslyBi Makoto]] kisses Mai and occasionaly fondles Mai and Noel. Mai's power requires her to kiss some other girls to work on them. Later on, Shiori performs a HeelFaceTurn and falls in love with Mai.

* JerkassWoobie: Shiori is revealed to be a BitchInSheepsClothing who's quite the sadist and aims to assassinate Jin. But when we see her backstory, we see her undergoing TrainingFromHell from a very young age, her parents pretty much never spoils her and she has been thrust into the dirty business long before she enrolled in the academy. Even after her HeelFaceTurn she still has her bitchy moments.

* AuthorsSavingThrow: In contrast to ''Remix Heart'', ''Variable Heart'' has less fanservice moments and more action moments from the start.

* BrokenBase: A lot of fans appreciate the lighter atmosphere and a better look into the life of some of the supporting cast before the series started. However, many people are also turned off by the overly overt {{Fanservice}}, which even by this series` standards is extremely raunchy.

In the second chapter alone, [[AmbiguouslyBi Makoto]] casually kisses Mai. And then there's Mai's Super taste. Later on still, Shiori performs a HeelFaceTurn and falls in love with Mai.

Many claimed that the Fanservice-ness of the series (or Blazblue as a whole) went one step too far.
