He makes no attempt to help his erstwhile friend, instead watching in rapt fascination as the beast tries to eat Jasper alive, and he gets angry when a crewmember saves Jasper by killing the creature since "a dead specimen is useless to the academy!". This shows that Belgon values scientific discovery over human life and hints at the depths to which he'll later sink.
